Download or read book The Trade Policy Review Mechanism written by Mathias Kende and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WTO's Trade Policy Review Mechanism, which reviews the trade policies and practices of each WTO member at regular intervals, is generally considered to function well. In this day and age, complacency is unwise. Examining trade policy reviews throughout the lifetime of the TPRM, this book details its evolution from Article X of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to the proposed modifications resulting from the mechanism's latest appraisal, examining the budgetary capabilities and technical performance of all the main entities who participate in the reviews. On the basis of these considerations, the author concludes that in order to remain relevant, especially in times of increased global protectionism, the TPRM could, and should do better, and provides unique and timely suggestions for reform.

Download or read book Regionalizing Oman written by Steffen Wippel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the historical structures and current dynamics of Oman’s regionalization processes and their political, economic and social dimensions. It is based on an interdisciplinary and trans-regional dialogue between scholars from different social sciences and area studies such as political science, economics, management, economic and social geography, history, social anthropology and linguistics as well as Middle East/West Asian, gulf and African studies, and develops four major axes of research: - Oman’s integration into global and regional flows of goods, capital, people and ideas; - The multi-scaled political negotiation of such integration (or disintegration) processes; - Consequences of suchlike processes and forms of regionalization for (translocal) actors; - Ideas and strategic communication of regional belonging and the constitution of regions. Each chapter deals with one or more of these issues. Part I deals with concepts of regionalisation and region-building and presents different approaches that accentuate certain dimensions of these processes and come from different disciplinary backgrounds. Part II focuses on the translocal, transnational and (trans)regional movement of people, their practices and imaginations, be they contemporary labour in- and out-migrants, returnees from Eastern Africa or nomadic tribal members. Part III takes a closer look particularly at economic issues and regionalisation processes that are mainly based on multiple trade links, regional development policies or politics of regionalism. Part IV analyses political and socio-cultural issues in regional and global perspectives.

Download or read book Trade Policy Review Madagascar 2008 written by and published by Bernan Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2002, Madagascar's economy has recorded sustained real growth at an annual average rate of 6.2 per cent, attributed in particular to trade liberalization reforms, and boosted primarily by the expansion of industrial activities, construction, financial services, telecommunications and transport, according to a WTO Secretariat report on the trade policies and practices of Madagascar. This performance would improve with a more transparent, credible and predictable trade regime that can be achieved by stronger multilateral commitments by Madagascar through extension of its tariff bindings to more non-agricultural products, lower bound rates and stronger GATS commitments. A reform of the taxation system, to respect the principle of national treatment, would add consistency to Madagascar's trade regime. Such an improved climate would help Madagascar to attract the capital needed to exploit its vast potential and derive greater benefit from its participation in the multilateral trading system. The international community could give Madagascar more help in its reform efforts by responding favourably to its request for technical assistance. The WTO Secretariat report, along with a policy statement by the Government of Madagascar, will be the basis for the second TPR of Madagascar by the Trade Policy Review Body of the WTO on 2 and 4 April 2008.

Download or read book Imaginaries of Modernity written by John Rundell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new perspective on the issue of modernity through a series of interconnected essays. Drawing centrally on the works of Castoriadis, Luhmann, Heller and Lefort, and in critical discussion with Weber, Durkheim, Simmel, Adorno, Habermas and Taylor, the author argues that modernity is not only a unique historical creation but also a multiple one. With a focus on five broad themes - the problem of understanding of modernity after the decline of grand narratives; the complexity of the modern condition; politics, especially with reference to freedom and totalitarian regimes; the variety and density of modern life; and the centrality of a concept of culture to social and critical theory - John Rundell advances the view that modernity is not the outcome of an evolutionary process or historical development, but is unique and indeterminate, as are the constitutive dimensions that can be identified as 'modern'. There are, then, different modernities. A rigorous engagement with a range of prominent and contemporary social theorists, Imaginaries of Modernity casts new light on the significance of understanding the multidimensional character of modernity and the plurality of its forms beyond the conventional paradigms associated with only the West. As such, it will appeal to scholars of social theory, critical theory, sociology and philosophy concerned with questions of culture, politics and modernity.

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Middle East Cities written by Haim Yacobi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the current debate about cities in the Middle East from Sana’a, Beirut and Jerusalem to Cairo, Marrakesh and Gaza, the book explores urban planning and policy, migration, gender and identity as well as politics and economics of urban settings in the region. This handbook moves beyond essentialist and reductive analyses of identity, urban politics, planning, and development in cities in the Middle East, and instead offers critical engagement with both historical and contemporary urban processes in the region. Approaching "Cities" as multi-dimensional sites, products of political processes, knowledge production and exchange, and local and global visions as well as spatial artefacts. Importantly, in the different case studies and theoretical approaches, there is no attempt to idealise urban politics, planning, and everyday life in the Middle East –– which (as with many other cities elsewhere) are also situations of contestation and violence –– but rather to highlight how cities in the region, and especially those which are understudied, revolve around issues of housing, infrastructure, participation and identity, amongst other concerns. Analysing a variety of cities in the Middle East, the book is a significant contribution to Middle East Studies. It is an essential resource for students and academics interested in Geography, Regional and Urban Studies of the Middle East.
