Estimates from a gravity model and bilateral trade data support the view that both CEFTA and BFTA helped expand regional trade and limit the emergence of a "hub-and-spoke" relationship between the CEECs and the European Union (EU). These empirical conclusions carry some important policy implications for the "second wave" of prospective EU members among Southeastern European Countries (SEECs). The paper argues that the SEECs should reconsider their bilateral approach to trade liberalization and move towards a multilateral free-trade area as exemplified by both the CEFTA and BFTA.

A three-country model is considered with one country exporting intermediate good and two countries exporting final good. Other chapters explore the major theories of international trade from antiquity up to the neo-classical economics in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Effective trade policies for developed countries today are also discussed, as well as international trade, both exports and imports, in countries such as India and China. It is the authors contention that these two countries pose particular challenges and offer particular opportunities in the evolving trade-development nexuses.

This book is the first to develop a single theoretical framework to account for past liberalization practices and also to anticipate ongoing changes in the international organization of trade policy.
