Book Trade Liberalization and Its Effects on the Economic Growth of Bangladesh

Download or read book Trade Liberalization and Its Effects on the Economic Growth of Bangladesh written by Shapan Majumder and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of the trade policy on Bangladesh economy between the periods 1990 to 2010. This research analyzes the achievements of the economy regarding the important variables such as growth of GDP, export, import, exchange rate, terms of trade, and foreign reserve after the trade liberalization in 1990s. The study demonstrates that the inward policy of the trade liberalization reduces the import while the forward policy increases the employment, production, and export. Finally, liberalization policy improves overall economic indicators as GDP per capita, FDI, and remittances have been growing up since pre-liberalization. The study shows that both export and import have increased noticeably since liberalization, with import rising faster than export in the period immediately after liberalization.

Book Implications of WTO Agreements and Unilateral Trade Policy Reforms for Poverty in Bangladesh

Download or read book Implications of WTO Agreements and Unilateral Trade Policy Reforms for Poverty in Bangladesh written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors examine the effects of WTO agreements and domestic trade policy reforms on production, welfare, and poverty in Bangladesh. They use a sequential dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, which takes into account accumulation effects, allowing for long-run analysis. The study is based on the 2000 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of Bangladesh including 15 production sectors, four factors of production (skilled and unskilled labor, agricultural and nonagricultural capital), and nine household groups (five in rural areas and four in urban areas). To examine the link between the macroeconomic effects and microeconomic effects in terms of poverty, the authors use the representative household approach with actual intra-group income distributions. The study presents five simulations for which the major findings are: - The Doha scenario has negative implications for the overall macroeconomy, household welfare, and poverty in Bangladesh. Terms of trade deteriorate and consumer prices, particularly food prices, increase more than nominal incomes, especially among poor households. - Free world trade has similar, but larger, impacts. - Domestic trade liberalization induces an expansion of agricultural and light manufacturing sectors, favorable changes in the domestic terms of trade. Although the short-run welfare and poverty impacts are negative, these turn positive in the long run when capital has adjusted through new investments. Rising unskilled wage rates make the poorest households the biggest winners in terms of welfare and poverty reduction. - Domestic liberalization effects far outweigh those of free world trade when these scenarios are combined. - Remittances constitute a powerful poverty-reducing tool given their greater importance in the income of the poor." -- Cover verso.

Book Global Trade Liberalization

Download or read book Global Trade Liberalization written by Serajul Hoque and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global trade liberalization with regard to the readymade garments industry is a topic of highest relevance for the Bangladeshi economy and linked very strongly to its changing social structure. Garment industry actually is a very new, export-oriented sector of the Bangladesh economy. It was only some twenty years ago that this sector was fully established in Bangladesh. Today it has grown to the number eighteen exporter world-wide, employing some 1.8 million people directly, of whom most of them are women, and another 10 million indirectly. The main markets are the EU and NAFTA. The development of Bangladesh garments industry was facilitated by the different Multi Fibre Arrangements. Therefore--as many other new competitors have grown over the last couple of years, namely South and East Asian including China, the ASEAN, Mexico and 24 Caribbean countries--Bangladesh's garment industry will face a difficult period after 2004.

Book Effect Of Trade Openness On Economic Growth Of Bangladesh Economy

Download or read book Effect Of Trade Openness On Economic Growth Of Bangladesh Economy written by Umme Humayara Manni and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the impact of trade liberalization and deregulation on the Bangladesh economy between the periods 1980 to 2009. The book analyzes the achievements of the economy in terms of important variables such as growth, inflation and the trade balance. An analysis is for the most part descriptive relying on tables and graphs. However, the findings in these chapters are put to test by econometric analysis towards the end. The analysis clearly indicates that GDP growth increased consequent to liberalization and deregulation. Trade liberalization does not seem to have aftected inflation in the economy. The quantitative analysis also suggests that greater openness has had a favourable effect on economic development. Both real export and imports have increased with greater openness. Liberalization policy certainly improves export of the country which eventually leads higher economic growth after 1990s. The average degree of openness sharply increases more than double after the year 2000 than the last decade. Despite of this improvement after liberalization the average trade balance of Bangladesh remains in deficit.

Book Trade Liberalization Growth and Poverty Reduction

Download or read book Trade Liberalization Growth and Poverty Reduction written by Sadiq Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper seeks to compile evidence for the hypothesis that greater trade openness, and associated deregulation is good for growth, and poverty reduction in Bangladesh. At the theoretical level, it can be argued that since Bangladesh is relatively heavily endowed with labor, within the framework of the Hecksher-Ohlin model (1933 and 1949), expansion of international trade opportunities will likely support the growth of labor-intensive export industries, promoting employment, and incomes as per the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem (1941). Arguments also suggest improved productive and allocative efficiency; factor accumulation and investment; knowledge spillovers; improved income distribution; and, government policy improvements. The paper argues, using qualitative and quantitative analysis and a case study approach, that Bangladesh's increasing global integration, based on trade liberalization, and other economic deregulation, especially as of the 90s, contributed significantly to the acceleration of per capita income growth, and poverty reduction. It looks briefly at issues of trade openness, and economic development from the theoretical perspective, reviews the empirical basis for the effects of trade openness on economic development, and, focuses broadly on economic deregulation, and trade liberalization. Policy regimes implications are analyzed to provide a series of observations.

Book Trade Liberalization and Food Sector of Bangladesh

Download or read book Trade Liberalization and Food Sector of Bangladesh written by Abu Hayat Md. Saiful Islam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book broadly discusses the trade liberalization impact on the food sector of Bangladesh. For doing so the book comprises of two sections, firstly; to analyze the policy incentives in terms of protection and efficiency of production through analysing comparative advantages in the rice sector by using policy analysis matrix (PAM) and secondly, to measure the effect of policy shocks on production, consumption and welfare distribution in the food sector of Bangladesh by using multi market modelling technique. From PAM in-line with financial profit, social profit, policy transfers and various protection coefficients such as NPCO,NPCI,EPC and PC and competitiveness coefficients such as DRC, SCB, SNRL and PNRL were derived. On the other hand, through multimarket modeling five scenarios (baseline: assumed free trade; Doha round: price increased effect;high cost: 5% decrease in supply under highest Doha round projection; productivity shift: 10% increase in supply and national protection: different level of protection in both market under baseline) were analyzed to know the welfare distribution as well as food security impact of price or policy shocks
