Book Tracheal Mite Parasitism of Honey Bees microform

Download or read book Tracheal Mite Parasitism of Honey Bees microform written by Lynn A. Royce and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International. This book was released on 1989 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), parasitizes the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., an insect used extensively by humans for pollination of domestic crops and for bee products, primarily honey. This parasite was first discovered in 1921 on the Isle of Wight, a small island situated in the English Channel off the southern coast of England. Controversy as to the impact of A. woodi on its honey bee host arose soon after its discovery. This project quantifies the mite-generated mortality of worker honey bees during the flowering period when the bees are active and suggests how mortality of individuals may impact the colony to which these individuals belong. A model of parasitism is derived that demonstrates how swarming may stabilize the populations of host and parasite, how drifting of worker bees between colonies may be directly related to parasite prevalence among the population of colonies and how interruption of swarming may disrupt this system. It appears that honey bee foraging has little impact on mite transmission, but microclimate probably is important. The mites transfer to new hosts mainly during the night. Tracheal mites produce both sexes in sufficient numbers to suggest that parthenogenesis is not invoked to take advantage of quickly expanding resources (i.e. young bees) in the spring. Mite fecundity in the Pacific Northwest peaks in June when bee turnover is greatest. Protein mucopolysaccharide material covers the hemolymph side of infested tracheae and these become darkened with age, suggesting that mite feeding initiates a coagulation-melanization response from the bee. Within a colony uninfested members are also affected by mite infestation of their sisters, as indicated by studies on individual bee physiology.

Book Status of Pollinators in North America

Download or read book Status of Pollinators in North America written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-13 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollinators-insects, birds, bats, and other animals that carry pollen from the male to the female parts of flowers for plant reproduction-are an essential part of natural and agricultural ecosystems throughout North America. For example, most fruit, vegetable, and seed crops and some crops that provide fiber, drugs, and fuel depend on animals for pollination. This report provides evidence for the decline of some pollinator species in North America, including America's most important managed pollinator, the honey bee, as well as some butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds. For most managed and wild pollinator species, however, population trends have not been assessed because populations have not been monitored over time. In addition, for wild species with demonstrated declines, it is often difficult to determine the causes or consequences of their decline. This report outlines priorities for research and monitoring that are needed to improve information on the status of pollinators and establishes a framework for conservation and restoration of pollinator species and communities.

Book The Beekeeper s Handbook

Download or read book The Beekeeper s Handbook written by Diana Sammataro and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1973, tens of thousands of first-time and experienced beekeepers alike have relied on The Beekeeper's Handbook as the best single-volume guide to the hobby and profession of beekeeping. Featuring clear descriptions and authoritative content, this handbook provides step-by-step directions accompanied by more than 100 illustrations for setting up an apiary, handling bees, and working throughout the season to maintain a healthy colony of bees and a generous supply of honey. This book explains the various colony care options and techniques, noting advantages and disadvantages, so that beekeepers can make the best choices for their own hives. This fourth edition has been thoroughly redesigned, expanded, updated, and revised to incorporate the latest information on Colony Collapse Disorder, green IPM methods, regional overwintering protocols, and procedures for handling bees and managing diseases and pests such as African honey bees and bee mites. The book explains not only how but also why each step is part of the transformative process that results in the magnificent creation of honey. This essential guide is a beekeeper's most valuable resource. Colony Collapse Disorder has renewed our recognition of the importance of small-scale beekeeping and the critical role of bees in the production of our food supply. For the growing number of beekeepers looking to set up hives for either a rewarding hobby or a profitable commercial enterprise, this updated and revised essential how-to guide includes: step-by-step directions for all stages from setting up an apiary to harvesting honey; approximately 100 illustrations featuring techniques, equipment, and bee biology; information about how to manage new pests and diseases including Colony Collapse Disorder; coverage of new trends and changes in beekeeping including green IPM techniques and new laws for urban beekeeping; the most up-to-date bibliography and list of resources on the topic; and a new user-friendly book design that clearly highlights instructions and other important features.

Download or read book Bees written by Richard M. Florio and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For students of animal behavior, honey bees are an intriguing organism, interacting in a complex eusocial colony setting as well as with the environment as they forage over wide areas. Much of that behavior is moderated by odors, which honey bees can detect at extremely low concentrations. This book presents current research from across the globe in the study of bees, including the importance of odor in learning and behavior of the honeybee; the role of honeybees in pollination ecology; threats to the stingless bee in the Brazilian Amazon; honeybee viruses and age-related associative and non-associative learning performance in honeybees.

Book Honey Bee Tracheal Mite Acarapis Woodi Rennie Arachnida Acarina Tarsonemidae

Download or read book Honey Bee Tracheal Mite Acarapis Woodi Rennie Arachnida Acarina Tarsonemidae written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1984, the honey bee tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), was found in Florida. Although it was first described by Rennie in 1921, the mite was not found in the United States until 1984. Rennie described the mite from bees on the Isle of Wight and associated it with the "Isle of Wight" disease. Symptoms of this infestation were described as "bees crawling about unable to fly, and with wings disjointed; dwindling and mortality of colonies have been said to occur rapidly with colonies dying within a month." It was later shown that the tracheal mite was not the cause of the "Isle of Wight" disease (Bailey 1964), and later reports (Bailey 1968; Morse 1978) indicate that A. woodi is not as serious a pest of honey bees as previously thought. In combination with other adverse conditions, however, heavy mite infestations may cause a reduction in bee activity.
