Book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field

Download or read book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.

Book Copper and Zinc in Inflammation

Download or read book Copper and Zinc in Inflammation written by Roberto Milanino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of trace metals, especially copper and zinc, in the pathogenesis of rheumatic conditions has continued to receive much interest following the initial upsurge of research activity in the 1970s. Meantime also copper and zinc complexes receive continued attention for their potential anti-inflam matory actions. Since the previous major titles were published in this field some years ago (e. g. 1,2) it was considered timely to consider progress which has been made in the interceding period. Thus in this volume aspects are re viewed of the metabolism and biodisposition of copper and zinc, especially as they may be influenced by inflammatory processes, the mode of action of copper and zinc compounds in inflammatory states, and the actions of some newer copper complexes. While we still understand relatively little about how copper and zinc complexes work in inflammation, and indeed what the fate of the ligands and their complexed ions is in inflammation, it is hoped that this volume will be useful for giving a current view of the "state of art" in the field. Special thanks are given to the valued efforts of the contributors, Dr Peter Clarke (Publishing Director, Kluwer Academic Publishers) and Mrs Veronica Rainsford-Koechli for her help in proof-reading the manuscripts. Book Copper and Zinc in Inflammatory and Degenerative Diseases

Download or read book Copper and Zinc in Inflammatory and Degenerative Diseases written by K. D. Rainsford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abnormal metabolism and distribution of both copper and zinc occurs in many inflammatory and degenerative diseases. The pattern of these changes varies at different stages of these diseases and with differing types of conditions. The corollary to this situation is the possibility of using drugs or metal complexes to modify both the perturbed status of copper and zinc and thus the disease states. This book comprehensively reviews the clinical and experimental data on the changes in copper and zinc status in different diseases and the use of various complexes of these metals or drugs to treat a diversity of inflammatory and degenerative conditions.

Book Inflammatory Diseases and Copper

Download or read book Inflammatory Diseases and Copper written by John R. J. Sorenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1928, it was discovered that copper was essential for normal human metabolism. A decade later, in 1938, it was observed that patients with rheu matoid arthritis exhibited a higher than normal serum copper concentration that returned to normal with remission of this disease. Thirteen years later, it was found that copper complexes were effective in treating arthritic dis eases. The first report that copper complexes had antiinflammatory activity in an animal model of inflammation appeared twenty-two years after the dis covery of essentiality. In 1976, it was suggested that the active forms of the antiarthritic drugs are their copper complexes formed in vivo. This sugges tion has been confirmed and extended in the interim in over 200 recent publications. Individual biomedical scientists from many countries who have published in these areas recently saw a need for a meeting to exchange current re supporting new hypotheses. We search results and discuss the evidence met on the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences campus in Little Rock, Arkansas, August 10-13, 1981. Participants came from Australia, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Wales, Zimbabwe, and over twenty of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Meeting of the International Society for Trace Element Research in Humans (ISTERH) was held in Tokyo from August 28 through September 1,1989. On August 27, the day preceding the opening of the meeting, a typhoon made a direct attack on Tokyo, welcoming guests from all over the world in a rather violent way. To our great relief, the weather during the week of the meeting turned out to be exceptionally agreeable for that time of year in Tokyo. We were also pleased to see the entire scheduled course of the meeting, including the social activities, carried out smoothly and the contents of the program favorably appraised. The meeting was attended by 518 scientists from 30 countries. Recent unrest following steps toward democratization in the Communist bloc gave rise to some apprehension; therefore, we were particularly pleased to see attendants from China, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. No one could possibly have predicted the drastic change in Eastern Europe that followed, but again, we were relieved to learn (by a subsequent letter) of the safety of an attendant from Rumania, who had been our greatest concern. A total of 384 papers were contributed to the meeting. The abstracts for all have been published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Medicine, vol 2, No. 2/3 (1989). This proceedings carries 64 subjects introduced in the Special Session.

This suggestion was confirmed and extended in the interim with over 1000 recent publications, and many of these were addressed in the proceed ings of our first symposium, published in 1982. The present symposium was organized to present new normal physiological, nutritional, and biochemical aspects of essential metal loelement metabolism as well as variations in metabolism associated with disease states. In addition new data concerning antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antiulcer, anticancer, anticarcinogenic, analgesic, and radioprotectant activities of copper complexes were presented. These activities are consistent with the notion that they represent the facilitation of normal copper-dependent metabolic processes in dis ease states. The presentations and interactive discussions that fol lowed are contained in these proceedings. John R. J. Book Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements

Download or read book Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements written by Jean Nève and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized by the French Speaking Society for Study and Research on Essential Trace Elements (SFERETE), the Fifth International Congress on Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology "Therapeutic Uses of Trace Elements" was held February 4-7. 1996, in Meribel (Savoy, France). This resort is situated in the heart of the Three Valleys domain, at the gate way of the beautiful Vanoise National Park. More than 250 participants covering six conti nents attended the meeting. This volume contains the text of plenary lectures and of several oral and poster communications. Trace element deficiencies are not only encountered in developing countries or during malnutrition. Subclinical features are also observed in developed societies where they consti tute a background for an impressive number of pathological states. Preventive and curative treatments with commercial products are often prescribed without reliable studies about their clinical interest or potential efficiency. By contrast empirical approaches such as the catalytic therapy, nutritional and pharmacological aspects of trace elements were emphasized on a sci entific basis to favor their rational therapeutic use.

Book Aspirin and the Salicylates

Download or read book Aspirin and the Salicylates written by K. D. Rainsford and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 361 pages. This text likewise provides a refreshing multidisciplinary approach to aspirins that cover the whole extent from chemical to clinical aspects. This publication is a good reference for clinicians, pharmacists, and students intending to acquire general knowledge of the aspirin and salicylates.

Book Side Effects of Anti Inflammatory Drugs 3

Download or read book Side Effects of Anti Inflammatory Drugs 3 written by K. D. Rainsford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book represent papers which were presented at the Third International Meeting on "Side-Effects of Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Drugs" which was held under the auspices of the University of Verona, Institute of Pharmacology in Verona on 8-11 May 1991. This meeting was held in conjunction with the 13th European Workshop on Inflammation and although publications from this part of the meeting are not published here (they appear in Agents and Actions), we were fortunate in having a group of people interested in inflammation from varying backgrounds. The success of the third meeting followed previous meetings held in Cambridge and Verona respectively and continue a tradition which has now become well established. The meeting brought together physicians, scientists and those concerned with the production and use of anti-inflammatory drugs to a very stimulating conference to discuss basic issues affecting all aspects of side-effects of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs as well as their detection and treatment. The meeting was held in the Auditorium of Glaxo Italy and we are very grateful to that company for use of their facilities as well as to the University of Verona, Institute of Pharmacology, for valuable secretarial and administrative help. The success of the conference would not have been possible without valuable financial assistance of the companies listed separately (under Acknowledgements) as well as to the organizers of the 13th European Workshop on Inflammation who collaborated with us.
