Download or read book Contaminated Sediments written by Ulrich Förstner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems, and they may also affect groundwater quality and agricultural products when disposed on land. Four aspects are covered reflecting the development of knowledge in particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: - the identification, surveillance, monitoring and control of sources and distribution of pollutants, - the evaluation of solid/solution relations of contaminants in surface waters, - the study of in-situ processes and mechanisms of pollutant transfer in various compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, - the assessment of the environmental impact of particle-bound contaminants, i.e. the development of sediment quality criteria. A final chapter focusses on practical aspects concerning contaminated sediments.

Book Water Quality Assessments

Download or read book Water Quality Assessments written by Deborah V Chapman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook, now thoroughly updated and revised in its second edition, gives comprehensive advice on the designing and setting up of monitoring programmes for the purpose of providing valid data for water quality assessments in all types of freshwater bodies. It is clearly and concisely written in order to provide the essential information for all agencies and individuals responsible for the water quality.

Book Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals

Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals written by Philip H. Howard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-04-30 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 5-volume set allows you to assess the health and environmental effects of chemicals by determining the routes of exposure of the chemical to sensitive organisms. Environmental Fate and Exposure of Organic Chemicals provides relevant facts on how individual chemicals behave in the environment and how humans and environmental organisms are exposed to the chemicals during their production, rise, transport, and disposal. Each chemical is prepared by one of the best-known organizations in environmental fate and exposure and is peer-reviewed by a panel of expert scientists. The information on each chemical includes all experimental values and references for physical properties, all chemical fate studies, and all available monitoring data and interpretative summaries.

Book The Role of Particulate Matter in the Fate of Contaminants in Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book The Role of Particulate Matter in the Fate of Contaminants in Aquatic Ecosystems written by R. J. Allan and published by Burlington, Ont. : Environment Canada, Inland Waters Directorate. This book was released on 1986 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1978, I presented an earlier review of advances in sediment-related fluvial transmission of contaminants (Allan, 1979). Most of the examples involved phosphorus in suspended loads or phosphorus forms in bottom sediments"--Introduction, page 9.

Book Trace Organic Contaminants in Sediment of the International Section of the St Lawrence River 1981

Download or read book Trace Organic Contaminants in Sediment of the International Section of the St Lawrence River 1981 written by J. C. Merriman and published by Burlington, Ont. : Inland Waters/Lands Directorate, Ontario Region, Water Quality Branch. This book was released on 1987 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bottom and suspended sediment was collected from the St. Lawrence River between Kingston and Cornwall inJuly 1981 by the Water Quality Branch, Ontario Region. Samples were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, chlorobenzenes and organic carbon. Particle size distribution was determined on bottom sediment. This report summarizes the concentration and distribution of the trace organic contaminants and compares findings with other available historical data. Total PCBs were compared with the Ontario Ministry of Environment dredged material guideline for open water disposal"--Abstract, p. v

Book Modelling of Toxic Contaminants in the Niagara River Plume in Lake Ontario

Download or read book Modelling of Toxic Contaminants in the Niagara River Plume in Lake Ontario written by I. Stepien and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The transport and compartmental distribution of chlorinated benzenes in the Niagara Bar area were simulated using a two dimensional model and the results were compared with observational data collected during 1982 and 1983 experiments. The interaction between suspended sediment and compartmental concentrations of pollutants has been described by a partitioning submodel and physical parameters of the model (partition coefficient, settling velocity) were calibrated with field data. It was found that the dynamics of the Niagara plume are strongly controlled by the wind driven field of currents and the time-dependent loading of contaminants. The model may be used for the purposes of nearshore and short-time prediction of fate and transport of toxic chemicals in the coastal zone"--Abstract.
