Book Town Records of Topsfield Vol 2

Download or read book Town Records of Topsfield Vol 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Town Records of Topsfield, Vol. 2: Massachusetts, 1739-1778 Town affairs in Topsfield during the forty years covered by the following pages developed little of an unusual character save the decision to erect a new meeting-house and the several steps, taken in common with other towns, leading up to direct participation in the War of the Revolution. The most absorbing interest was shown in every detail of the construction of the meeting-house, at last ending in the "seating" of the people, in which was shown "Respect to persons above Sixty years of age before money in younger men." The old meeting-house was badly in need of repairs. The roof leaked and the glass in the casement sash was in constant need of the "glasser's" attendance and at last a committee reported that the old building, built in 1703, was not worth further repairing. Among the various plans for bettering the bad condition of the building had been one, proposed in 1752, "to cut of the Lucombs and make the Roof four Squar or Weather they will raise a principal at Each Corner so as to make ye north and south Roofs the whole Length of sd house." Here is the only evidence that has come down to us that the 1703 meeting-house bore a hip roof with small dormer windows projecting from each of its four sides while from the center of the roof extended a "turret." Fashions in architectural styles succeed each other as inexorably as fashions in womens dress. The 1703 meetinghouse turns out to be similar in appearance to contemporaneous meeting-houses at Newbury, Ipswich, Salem Village and elsewhere. The old Ship Meeting-house, yet standing at Hingham, is very similar. The raising of the frame of the new building called for a dinner for one hundred men provided at the expense of the town and the detail of liquid refreshments was considered to be of such importance that first the meeting voted "to get a Barriel of Rhum" for the "Laborers;" then by another vote it decided to provide "half a Hundred wait of Shuger;" and finally "The Town agreed to Git Twelve Barriels of Sider" as supplemental supplies. Book excerpt: While it lasted only sixteen months, King Philip’s War (1675-1676) was arguably one of the most significant of the colonial wars that wracked early America. As the first major military crisis to directly strike one of the Empire’s most important possessions: the Massachusetts Bay Colony, King Philip’s War marked the first time that Massachusetts had to mobilize mass numbers of ordinary, local men to fight. In this exhaustive social history and community study of Essex County, Massachusetts’s militia, Kyle F. Zelner boldly challenges traditional interpretations of who was called to serve during this period. Drawing on muster and pay lists as well as countless historical records, Zelner demonstrates that Essex County’s more upstanding citizens were often spared from impressments, while the “rabble” — criminals, drunkards, the poor— were forced to join active fighting units, with town militia committees selecting soldiers who would be least missed should they die in action. Enhanced by illustrations and maps, A Rabble in Arms shows that, despite heroic illusions of a universal military obligation, town fathers, to damaging effects, often placed local and personal interests above colonial military concerns.
