Book Town Planning Scheme

Download or read book Town Planning Scheme written by Narendra Patel and published by IndraStra Global. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, India has witnessed rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. It is the world’s second-most populous country, with a population of 1028 million and, of this, 285 million (27.8%) live in its 7,935 cities and towns (as per census 2011). Economic reforms have given a push to the process of urbanization and it is expected that by 2050, half of its population will be living in cities and there will certainly be an increase in the number of cities and towns. The land available for development is scarce in cities, with serviced urban land being scarcer and mostly privately owned. It is therefore imperative to design a land management tool catering to both the existing developmental need and the future urban growth. Indian cities have the urban development planning process is done at a hierarchical level. Urban development is regulated to the macro-level plan by the Development Plan or Master Plan which is a statutory instrument to control, direct and promote the growth of the development and redevelopment of the urban area. The development plan is prepared with the view of achieving maximum social and economic benefits. A micro-level plan, on the other hand, indicates details and specific locations of various activities and facilities as suggested in the development plan. Therefore, town planning schemes are necessary for the implementation of the development plan.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah on the banks of the river Sabarmati, Ahmedabad is today India's seventh largest city and also one of the subcontinent's few medieval cities which continues to be prosperous and important. Soon after it was established, the royal city of Ahmedabad became the commercial and cultural capital of Gujarat. When the Mughal Empire annexed Gujarat in 1572, Ahmedabad lost its political pre-eminence, but continued to flourish as a great trading centre connecting the silk route with the spice route. Briefly under the Marathas in the eighteenth century, Ahmedabad experienced a dimming of its fortunes, but with the beginning of British control from the early nineteenth century the city reasserted its mercantile ethos, even as it began questioning age-old social hierarchies. The opening of the first textile mill in 1861 was a turning point and by the end of the century Ahmedabad was known as the Manchester of the East. When Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915, looking for a place where he could establish 'an institution for the whole of India', it was Ahmedabad he chose. With the setting up of his Sabarmati Ashram, the great manufacturing centre also became a centre for new awakening. It became the political hub of India, radiating the message of freedom struggle based on truth and non-violence. After Independence, it emerged as one of the fastest-growing cities of India and in the 1960s Ahmedabadis pioneered institutions of higher education and research in new fields such as space sciences, management, design and architecture. Yet, through the centuries, Ahmedabad's prosperity has been punctuated by natural disasters and social discord, from famines and earthquakes to caste and religious violence. Ahmedabadis have tried to respond to these, trying to meld economic progress with a new culture of social harmony. Coinciding with the 600th anniversary of the founding of Ahmedabad, this broad brush history highlights socio-economic patterns that emphasize Indo-Islamic and Indo-European synthesis and continuity, bringing the focus back to the pluralistic heritage of this medieval city. Evocative profiles of Ahmedabadi merchants, industrialists, poets and saints along with descriptions and illustrations of the city's art and architecture bring alive the city and its citizens.

Book Urban Planning and its Discontents

Download or read book Urban Planning and its Discontents written by Darshini Mahadevia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of its kind, introduces various aspects of urban planning in India and contributes towards debates on changes required in the current practice. Urban planning in India means many things to city residents and is used generically to include all interventions in the cities, such as public policy design, institutional design, spatial and territorial plans, infrastructure plans, public administration, community participation, and their implementation through programmes, schemes, and projects. While urban planning is expected to meet the global development agendas of equitable and just urbanisation, climate change and sustainable development goals (SDGs), in practice it has largely remained confined to statutory spatial planning represented by ‘Master Plan’ or ‘Comprehensive Plan’. This volume delves into this world of urban planning as critical insiders to see how it works in India, analysing the city level spatial plans, the Master or Development Plans, of select cities to assess whether these are capable of addressing the global agendas and coordinate with all other plans prepared for the city. It examines whether it would work in reference to the contemporary issues, SDGs, and global agendas, and discusses strategies on how to make it work better. It also deals with each of the above stated criticisms of the practice and examines the debates, data, approaches, agendas, plans, and the future of urban planning in India. This book comes in at a time when the urban planners and policy makers have themselves begun to discuss a need to relook at urban planning practices and tools to meet the future requirements of urbanisation in India. It will be a useful reference volume for the students, scholars and practitioners alike, and be of interest to researchers and students of urban planning, architecture, public administration, civil engineering, geography, economics, and sociology. It will also be useful for policy makers and professionals working in the areas of town and country planning.
