Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Town Geology Student's Elements of Geology. I have tried rather to teach the method of geology, than its facts; to furnish the student with a key to all geology, rough indeed and rudi mentary, but sure and sound enough, I trust, to help him to unlock most geological problems which he may meet, in any quarter of the globe. But young men must remember always, that neither' this book. Nor all the books in the world, will make them geolo gists. No amount of book learning will make a man a scientific man: nothing but patient observation, and quiet and fair thought over what he has observed. He must go out for himself, see for himself, compare and judge for himself, in the field, the quarry, the cut ting. He must study rocks, ores, fossils, in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the City of New York: Greater New York In geological affinities, if the term may be used, Manhattan and the Bronx are allied to northern or primordial, even archaean' structures; Richmond, Kings and Queens to southern and recent, though, indeed, in Richmond, there is a problematical nucleus of serpentine hills, probably derivative from crystalline schists, similar to those of Manhattan Island. In View of this diversity of feature the discussion of the topo graphical conditions and the geological nature of the City of New York will naturally fall into. Book The Geology of the Land s End District Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Geology of the Land s End District Classic Reprint written by Clement Reid and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Land's End District The geological map accompanying this memoir combines the land-areas represented by Sheets 351 and 358 of the new series one-inch map. The original survey of the district was made by Sir H. T. De la Beche, and the results were published in 1839 on the old series one-inch map, Sheet 33. In the earlier issues of this Sheet the slaty rocks (killas) were simply coloured Grauwacke; but in the later issues from about 1846 onwards the rocks in question were coloured Devonian. Additional lodes were inserted by Sir W. W. Smyth on a revised edition of Sheet 33, which appeared in 1866. On comparing the old map with the map to which this memoir refers, it will be seen that one of the most important differences is the reference of the slaty rocks to the Lower Palaeozoic period and their subdivision into three groups, to which the terms Portscatho, Falmouth and Mylor have been applied. No characteristic fossils have been found in these rocks, so that some doubt as to their age may still remain; for the reasons that have led to the classification which has been adopted, the reader is referred to the memoirs on Sheets 352 (Falmouth) and 353 (Mevagissey), and to a paper by Mr. Hill on 'The Older and Newer Palaeozoics of West Cornwall' (Geol. Mag., 1906, p. 206). The literature of the district is very extensive, especially in the departments of mining and mineralogy. In mining we are largely indebted to Henwood, De la Beche, W. W. Smyth, R. Hunt, Le Neve Foster, Mr. J. H. Collins, J. Arthur Phillips, and Prof. H. Louis. In mineralogy the list of writers is too numerous to quote. For more than 200 years the district has attracted the attention of collectors and mineralogists, and in every good collection of British minerals a large number of rare and beautiful specimens that have been obtained from it will be found. To Samuel Allport and J. A. Phillips we are indebted for important papers on the microscopic structure of certain rocks, and to Mr. J. H. Collins for similar papers on Tinstones and Capels. Book The Geologist s Traveling Hand Book An American Geological Railway Guide Giving the Geological Formation at Every Railway Station with Notes on Int

Download or read book The Geologist s Traveling Hand Book An American Geological Railway Guide Giving the Geological Formation at Every Railway Station with Notes on Int written by James Macfarlane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geologist's Traveling Hand-Book: An American Geological Railway Guide, Giving the Geological Formation at Every Railway Station, With Notes on Interesting Places on the Routes, and a Description of Each of the Formations The United States are intersected by numerous railroads leading in all directions, and nearly every one has occasion more or less to travel on them for considerable distances. In these railway journeys no person who has the least power of observation can fail to notice the peculiarities in the scenery and the great variety ih the formations of rock to be seen in the railway cuts and cropping out on the hillsides. If we always had a professor of geology for our traveling companion, we would be glad to learn from him what these various formations of rock are, what place they occupy in the series of strata that are visible on the earth's surface, and their mineral and other productions; also at what other localities the same rocks occur, and whether they are entirely new to us or the same we have seen elsewhere. This work is a substitute for the supposed traveling professor of geology, giving in a small space the names of the geological formations which occur along the lines of the railroads, and in another part of the book is to be found a plain but full description of each of them. There are also foot notes directing attention to interesting geological places and objects on the routes of the railroads. One object of the work is to teach persons not versed in geology something of this science during the tedious and unprofitable hours of traveling, without study, not as in a text book, but by pointing to the things themselves as seen at railway stations and through the windows of a railway car. N 0 person could be so stupid as to travel all over the United States without learning the name of a single state or city through which he passes, yet how few persons know even the names of the geological formations on which they have spent their lifetimes. Every one is taught geography, and there is scarcely a child of sufficient age who cannot tell the name of the town, county and state in which he lives. But geology, which is just as well worth knowing, is neglected, and there is but little opportunity for learning any thing practically in regard to it from those about us. This is not owing to a want of a desire for knowledge, but to a want of instruction in this science, and of the practical application of what is learned by adding local geological information in a handy, cheap and accessible form, and this, which no other work affords, it is the aim of this book to furnish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology: Or Geology in Its Relations to the Arts and Manufactures In the next place, take the case of the Civil engineer who has to plan and lay down roads and railways, to execute cuttings and tunnels, to excavate docks and harbours, to erect piers and breakwaters, to deepen and widen tidal rivers, and bring in water-supplies to towns. Not a step can be taken in any of these important Operations without coming in contact with geological phenomena - not a plan can he lay down which does not depend more or less on a knowledge of rocks and rock-formations. It is true he may obtain information from geological maps and from professional geologists; but, even with this aid, his work will be executed with feebleness and uncertainty compared with that of one who can discriminate the geological structure of a country for himself. And it has simply been, and still is, for want Of this geological knowledge that so many of our engineering works have been executed at so much cost and with so little pecuniary satisfaction to their proprietors. Book The Configuration of the Rock Floor of Greater New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Configuration of the Rock Floor of Greater New York Classic Reprint written by William Herbert Hobbs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Configuration of the Rock Floor of Greater New York Accurate maps - The early importance of Manhattan Island in com mercial and economic lines and its entry upon great engineering enter prises which require a penetration of the rock floor have greatly facilitated the work of the structural geologist within the area. As early as 1821 the city was laid out, and the gridiron of numbered streets and avenues has not only been responsible for a precision and accuracy of the early maps, rarely obtainable elsewhere, but has given to even casual geological observations unusual value. Randall's map of the island, submitted in sections between the years 1811 and 1821, now preserved in'the Office of the commissioner of public works, gives the precise locations of all the old farms in relation to watercourses and topography. It comprises four volumes of 92 sheets of map, size 25 by 37 inches, on scale of 100 feet to the inch. General Viele's map, on the scale of feet to the inch, was published in 1874, 'z and is based upon Randall's map. It shows the original shore line of the island, the mainland, the drainage system, the topography, and the location of each exposure south of Manhattanville, all superimposed upon the gridiron of streets and avenues. The accuracy of this map has been abundantly attested by engineers, real estate men, and others, who habitually use it, and, so far as the exposures of rock are con cerned, it has been tested by the writer, both by comparison with the early reports of geologists upon Manhattan Island and by examination in the field.
