It is Habermas' "magnum opus", and it is regarded as one of the most important works of modern social thought. In this second and final volume of the work, Habermas examines the relations between action concepts and systems theory and elaborates a framework for analyzing the developmental tendencies of modern societies. He discusses in detail the work of Marx, Durkheim, G.H. Mead and Talcott Parsons, among others. By distinguishing between social systems and what he calls the "life-world", Habermas is able to analyze the ways in which the development of social systems impinges upon the symbolic and subjective dimensions of social life, resulting in the kind of crises, conflicts and protest movements which are characteristic of advanced capitalist societies in the late-20th century.

The book is structured around issues of land use planning methodology at four different scales, these being supranational, national, regional and farm. A total of seven case studies representing these four different scales are presented, illustrating common features of the agroclimatic and economic zones of the world. An essential feature of each study is the presentation of different perspectives of land use planning including those of the land users, scientists and decision-makers. This approach illustrates the requirements and interests of different parties, which may serve as a basis for negotiation. This book shows that despite the great technical advances of recent years, and our increased knowledge of the resource base, the challenges of land use planning are bewildering. The book begins by examining several models on information needs, information sources, patterns of seeking information, uptake, and use of technological innovations to establish and explain the constructs of the conceptual framework in chapter one. Chapter two introduces the constructs underpinning the framework. The constructs include information needs, information seeking patterns and perception of ICT. Maepa (2000) assert that once individual outlined his or her needs with regards to the required information, then directly or indirectly the individual positions themselves to identify the source(s), media, or channels to access the information require. The framework give insight that by examining developing nations deep isolated rural communities’ information needs, information seeking patterns will define the behavioural intention as to access to the types of ICT and usage. Again, assessing perception on ICT and whether they perceive its use to beneficial will lead to individual intention to access certain ICT innovation. Chapter three details of the technical stages of the framework are given. It covers the generalisation of the framework, theorising the framework as well as the use of Design Science research paradigm in the development and evaluation of the framework. In chapter four detailed explanation of the practical implementation of the framework in rural communities’ communication strategies designs are outlined, along with empirical case studies of rural small-scale farmers in Amathole District Municipality (ADM) of South Africa. This book has been derived from the author PhD work submitted to Nelson Mandela University South Africa. The book can be used as a support course material in graduate and undergraduate research work around conceptual frameworks design and analysis.

This dissertation takes a view that ICT can contribute to sustainable rural development when it is implemented and assessed through such a framework geared at building the capabilities and assets of the rural folks and improving the links within and between these people and the organisations and institutions that play a role in rural development. It reviews various paradigms of rural ICT in developing countries and goes on to analyse the implementation and contribution of two of such initiatives to rural livelihoods using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. The result revealed that such factors, as the perceptions of practitioners, political contentions and policy environments are the major factors shaping ICT initiatives for the rural poor.

This makes the design of technology adoption assessment tools to gauge adoption of technology among marginalised communities in developing countries to follow a tailor-made approach.
