Book Indonesia

Download or read book Indonesia written by World Bank and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses trends in the level and the regional incidence of poverty as well as changes in income inequality. It examines the characteristics of the poor and outlines a general strategy for continuing poverty reduction in the 1990s. In addition, recent Government initiatives to reduce poverty are analyzed in the context of the proposed general strategic approach. Then, the report discusses in detail sectoral issues in designing and implementing antipoverty programs in three areas that are critical to the needs of the poor - agricultural programs, and human resource development in the social services and other basic services, such as water supply, sanitation and other basic infrastructure. Within these sectors, the report identifies those areas of most benefit to the poor and outlines appropriate policies and programs to shift a larger portion of resources to these areas. Finally, implementing the strategy outlined in this report will require changes in the Government's current institutional arrangements for identifying and implementing poverty programs. The report concludes with a discussion of institutional arrangements and responsibilities that could increase the efficiency of the Government's efforts. There is also a discussion of the role that community groups could play, in addition to Government institutions, in reaching and delivering services more effectively to the poor.

Book Integrated Community Managed Development

Download or read book Integrated Community Managed Development written by L. Jan Slikkerveer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of recent advances in Integrated Community-Managed Development (ICMD) as an innovative strategy for the community-based development of local institutions in order to achieve lasting poverty reduction and empowerment. The original approach presented here to improving the lives and livelihoods of the poor takes a critical stance on the failing concept of conventional community development, as it is based on the shifting paradigm of 'bottom-up' cooperation and development, where recent regional autonomy policies are enabling national services to successfully integrate with local institutions at the community level. Based on recent experiences in South-East Asia, where the implementation of an alternative approach to integrating financial, medical, educational, communication and socio-cultural services has led to increased community participation and impressive poverty reduction, the book highlights the theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of this innovative strategy. The potential offered by applying the newly developed 'ICMD formula' worldwide as a function of themes, principles and services is reflected in the book’s diverse range of contributions, written by respected researchers and practitioners in the fields of development economics and financial management.

This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the history & progress of understanding development theory over the past 50 years. Development thinking has evolved from an early paradigm that focused on savings & capital investment to subsequent arguments favoring the inclusion of human capital, policy, technical change, & finally to the inclusion of the role of institutions, & good governance. Secure property rights in the broadest sense, which are applicable to all resources & not just land, are particularly important to realize investment yield. This evolution of development thought describes a conceptual framework that can guide development practitioners in prioritizing, sequencing, & characterizing all interventions aimed at reducing poverty.

Book Revisiting Growth and Poverty Reduction in Indonesia

Download or read book Revisiting Growth and Poverty Reduction in Indonesia written by A. M. Balisacan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has an impressive record of economic growth and poverty reduction over the past 2 decades. The growth-poverty nexus appears strong at the aggregate level. Newly constructed panel data on the country's 285 districts, however, reveal huge differences in poverty changes, subnational economic growth, and local attributes. Results of econometric analysis show that besides growth, other factors directly influence the welfare of the poor, apart from their impact on growth itself. Among the critical ones are infrastructure, human capital, ag. price incentives, and access to technology. Thus, while fostering economic growth is evidently crucial, a more complete poverty reduction strategy should take into account these relevant factors.

Book Poverty Reduction in Indonesia

Download or read book Poverty Reduction in Indonesia written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the report is to point at the need for a new poverty strategy, and the areas of action it should cover, where each area should be specifically discussed, addressing the lives of Indonesia's poor, and the tradeoffs policymakers will need to consider, based on the belief that this poverty strategy should emerge from a broad dialogue among stakeholders. First, in broadening poverty, the report looks at the facts of the late 1990s crisis, which revealed the precariousness of Indonesia's gains in reducing expenditure-based poverty. Thus to extend those gains, the poverty strategy needs to be defined, and then redeveloped by acknowledging the multidimensional reality of poverty, and, it is this notion which will lead to making the strategic choices. Second, within the country's political transition to a democratic, decentralized mode of governance, a poverty strategy needs to be consistent with an empowered populace, and democratic policymaking mechanisms. In creating a policy environment for raising the incomes of the poor, the report identifies the resumption of rapid sustainable growth, with rising real wages, employment opportunities, and, limited inflation, including the economic empowerment of the poor, enhanced by poverty-focused public expenditures. Inevitably, the provision of core public services is an area which should address the people's will in local governance policies, focusing on education and health, while providing appropriate infrastructure, and developing safety nets.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Trends in poverty are heavily dependent on labour market opportunities and social spending in education and health. The question is how to create opportunities and spend money wisely - a subject of intense debate in Indonesia. The government has brought a renewed focus to poverty reduction since the end of the Asian financial crisis, especially under the current president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. This book shows how Indonesia is travelling with regard to employment, social policy and poverty. It identifies promising new directions for strategies to alleviate poverty, some of which are already showing results.

Book Working with Nature against Poverty

Download or read book Working with Nature against Poverty written by Budy P Resosudarmo and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its low incomes, lagging social indicators and widespread poverty, eastern Indonesia epitomizes the problems of development in Indonesia. The challenge is to advance the economy. But this means more intensive use of natural resources, placing pressure on the region's unique ecosystems. This book explores the trade-offs and synergies between development, social concerns and the environment in Papua, Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara. It is written by leading scholars and experts on the region. They investigate the dilemmas of fishing in eastern Indonesia's seas, the strategies and challenges for mining and forestry, and the efforts to tackle biodiversity conservation and climate change. The book lays out the challenges for development, public administration and public health in Papua. It maps Maluku's road to recovery from conflict. And it examines ways to alleviate poverty in the desperately poor province of East Nusa Tenggara. The book provides an overview of the economy of each of these provinces, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the challenges of development and environment in eastern Indonesia.
