Book Progress towards development of the progressive management pathway for improving aquaculture biosecurity PMP AB Highlights of 2019 activities

Download or read book Progress towards development of the progressive management pathway for improving aquaculture biosecurity PMP AB Highlights of 2019 activities written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights the accomplishments of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) consultations and round-table discussions on the PMP/AB that were held during 2019. These include the following: (i) the Second Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB2) (29–31 January 2019); (ii) the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB): First Technical Working Group Meeting (TWG1) (20–22 March 2019); and (iii) the Roundtable Discussions on Aquaculture Biosecurity (22–26 July 2019). It reports on the progress made towards formulating, planning and developing implementation mechanisms for the PMP/AB, based on the comments and recommendations provided by the wide range of stakeholders and experts who participated in these events. In August 2019, the Tenth Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) Sub-Committee on Aquaculture, held in Trondheim, Norway endorsed the PMP/AB and the development of a multidonor-assisted, long-term aquaculture biosecurity component of an aquaculture programme, including its five pillars. Therefore, the FAO, through its Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, now has a mandate for the further development and implementation of the PMP/AB. Future activities include the establishment of an official Technical Working Group (TWG) that will drive the further development of the technical aspects of the PMP/AB, wider consensus building, initial application (pilot testing) and refinement of the PMP/AB tools, and resource mobilization for the aquaculture biosecurity programme. Guidance documents and resources for advocacy and training on the PMP/AB are currently in development to facilitate adoption at the national level.

This document sets out the findings of a FAO expert consultation, held in January 2004, to discuss relevant issues including approval of a draft strategy and outline plan for improving information on status and trends of aquaculture.

Book Aquaculture Management

    Book Details:
  • Author : James W. Meade
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461564700
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Aquaculture Management written by James W. Meade and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although some nations, such as Japan, have invested in aquaculture research and developed major aquaculture industries, the opportunities for similar devel opment in the United States remain largely unnoticed. In a typical recent year the United States, which claims 20% of the world's marine fisheries resources, imported seafood worth $4. 8 billion and exported $l. 3 billion. In addition to the $3. 5 billion deficit in food-fish, was another $2. 7 billion deficit for nonedible fishery products. Next to oil, fishery products constituted the second highest drain on the United States balance of payments and accounts for a significant portion of the foreign trade deficit. Furthermore, fish consumption has been increasing in North America. In response to the demand for fishery products, aquaculture managers not only have the opportunity to realize economic profit, but in doing so can make an important contribution to reducing the national debt, providing employment, and enhancing our diet. This book might be considered a farm management text for those in aquaculture. It is intended to provide an introduction to aquaculture principles and an introduction to management, including business and people management, microeconomics, and the concepts of efficiency and productivity. I hope it will bridge the gap between conservationists, the academic community, and commer cial culturists. Abundant references should enable the reader to quickly access literature on most topics germane to the management of culture systems.

Book Conference on Competitive and Sustainable Aquaculture

Download or read book Conference on Competitive and Sustainable Aquaculture written by Sirkka Heinimaa and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2012-05-09 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on Competitive and Sustainable Aquaculture was held on 4-5 October 2011 in the House of the Estates in Helsinki, Finland. The goal of the conference was to provide a forum for the authorities, the aquaculture industry, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss opportunities and challenges for aquaculture in Northern Europe. Moreover, the conference aimed at implementing the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and its flagship project on aquaculture. Globally, aquaculture has been the fastest growing food production sector over the past two decades. In contrast to the world trend, production in the EU - and especially the Baltic Sea region - has stagnated or even declined slightly during the 2000s. On the other hand, a rapid increase in aquaculture production has been seen in Norway. The great potential of aquaculture for feeding a growing human population in an era of declining wild stocks (the "Blue Revolution") is widely acknowledged, but new production must be built on sustainable practices and technologies.

Book Towards sustainable wildlife management

Download or read book Towards sustainable wildlife management written by Grimaud, P., Gumbo, D., Le Bel, S. (eds.) and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zambia and Zimbabwe, with Angola, Botswana and Namibia, constitute the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KaZa-TFCA), which is the largest transfrontier conservation area in the world (520 000 km²), and whose key objective is to join fragmented wildlife habitats to form an interconnected mosaic of protected areas and transboundary wildlife corridors. In this region, wildlife populations have declined over the past three decades, mainly due to poaching and loss of habitat. In this TFCA, the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme aims to address these challenges by promoting the model of community conservancy (CC) to diversify income-generating activities and supply a well-balanced source of wild and domestic protein. In Zimbabwe, the SWM project in KaZa supports the emerging project of Mucheni CC encompassing three wards of Binga District, in Matabeleland North Province. In Zambia, the target implementation sites are the Simalaha and Inyasemu CC, located in Southern Zambia. The SWM Programme is an initiative of the Organization of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) funded by the European Union and co-financed by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD). This seven-year programme (2017–2024) is being implemented in 15 OACPS member countries by a consortium of partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Centre for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Book Towards Defragmenting the Management System of Lake Chilwa Basin Malawi

Download or read book Towards Defragmenting the Management System of Lake Chilwa Basin Malawi written by Peter Mvula and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents results of the Defragmenting African Resource Management (DARMA) Project covering the Lake Chilwa basin in Malawi. The central theme is that, in order to ensure resource base sustainability, research and management within the basin should adopt an ecosystems approach. Presently, research and management of the basin is sector-based, hence resource user conflicts are increasing. User demand for various resources is increasing rapidly, mainly due to population increase and lack of alternative economic activities, thereby presenting challenges to sustainable resource management. Specific areas of sectoral interconnections are highlighted and defragmentation options suggested. (Series: Defragmenting African Resource Management [DARMA] - Vol. 1)
