Book excerpt: Many difficulties have been encountered by researchers attempting to assess women's status in contemporary societies. One major obstacle has to do with the problems encountered in developing indices of status that can be used as objective measures of women's position. Due to such obstacles, many, if not most, studies of women's status have concentrated on qualitative analyses of single cultures or culture areas, making comparisons across societies unsystematic and, therefore, of limited applicability. Yet it is just such systematic studies that are required if the conditions per- petuating women's status around the world are to be identified and changed. This work presents a first attempt to develop measures of woemen's status, using existing statistics, that are applicable across nations and make possible comparisons in time and space. This vilume reviews the literature on the determinants of women's status in con- temporary societies, analyzes the range of variation in women's position in the public sector, provides quantitative measures of women's status in the political, economic, edicational, and family spheres, and identifies factors important in explaining and predicting women's position on a world wide scale.

As economic power migrated into large-scale organizations inherently indifferent to gender distinctions, the patriarchal model lost its social and cultural sway, and women's continual efforts to rise in the world became steadily more successful. Total gender equality will eventually prevail; the only questions remaining are what it will look like, and how and when it will arrive.

Rong Chen argues that this distrust, with its accompanying overemphasis on specificity and fluidity of linguistic meaning and social values, is unwarranted and unhelpful. This book, however, by avoiding this line of research and any kind of prescription, represents a movement towards generalisation as a prerequisite of theorisation. Its research is predicated on the hypothesis that all terminological activities are founded upon some fundamental principles, which, at the same time, are manifested through context-bound variations or parameters. A particular advantage of the book is its employing of both field research and a review of research literature. The former allows it to carry out a comparative study by using a maximum variation sampling technique for gathering data from four language agencies of different ecolinguistic situations, namely Termcat (Catalan), TNC (Swedish), DGLFLF (French), and the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in Iran. In order to this, it uses a questionnaire concentrating on the macro- and micro-structures of the target organisations as a route map. The literature review allows the book to benefit from research documents from more than thirty sociolinguistic communities. The book’s unique feature includes the introduction of new concepts such as linguistics of science, systemic terminology, systemic planning, terminology argumentation, and sociocognitive terminometrics, among others. A further distinguishing feature is the fact that it discusses terminology not in a vacuum, but as a component of the language of science system.

It offers a unique and novel methodology for creating empirically grounded agent-based models of international migration – one of the most uncertain population processes and a top-priority policy area. The book discusses in detail the process of building a simulation model of migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. The proposed model-based approach integrates behavioural and social theory with formal modelling, by embedding the interdisciplinary modelling process within a wider inductive framework based on the Bayesian statistical reasoning. Principles of uncertainty quantification are used to devise innovative computer-based simulations, and to learn about modelling the simulated individuals and the way they make decisions. The identified knowledge gaps are subsequently filled with information from dedicated laboratory experiments on cognitive aspects of human decision-making under uncertainty. In this way, the models are built iteratively, from the bottom up, filling an important epistemological gap in migration studies, and social sciences more broadly.

Mediation has long been tethered to piecemeal and haphazard approaches, which have flatly failed to capture the gist of the uniqueness of this (often) poorly latched on (and poorly understood) dispute resolution mechanism. This book argues that, in order to fully grasp the richness of such dispute resolution mechanism, mediation must be parsed in four tiers. The first tier is the social dynamics of mediation. The second tier is the cultural dynamics of mediation. The third tier is the legal dynamics of mediation. The fourth tier is the cross-border and cross-cultural dynamics of mediation. Taken together, the four tiers that premise the four-tiered model of mediation seek to unlock the finding in view of which law and social reality are tightly interlocked. In this vein, it is the underlying social reality of a given jurisdiction that should dictate the design of a pre-suit court-connected mandatory mediation with an easy opt-out, a central claim of both social dynamics of mediation (the first tier of the four-tiered model of mediation) and legal dynamics of mediation (the third tier of the four-tiered model of mediation).
