Book excerpt: As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the deserted highway, a group of five friends found themselves hopelessly lost in the middle of nowhere. The hot summer air had given way to an eerie chill, sending shivers down their spines. With their car's GPS system on the fritz and cell phone service nonexistent, they had been driving aimlessly for what felt like hours in search of civilization. "This is ridiculous, we're going in circles," groaned Tim, slumped in the backseat. "Are we even going the right way?" Sarah asked, her voice tinged with anxiety as she peered out the window at the darkening landscape, the twisted shapes of dead trees looming like gnarled hands reaching for them. "I don't know," replied Mike, the designated driver. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white. "But we can't just sit here. We need to find a gas station or something before we run out of fuel." The gas gauge hovered perilously close to empty. Jenna leaned forward, fiddling with the radio dials, but the static crackled ominously-no stations came through in this desolate area. Just as they were about to resign themselves to another round of aimless driving, a flickering neon sign appeared on the horizon like a beacon. "Tourist Trap," it read in bold, flashing letters that buzzed and hummed. "Thank god, maybe we can get directions or at least use a phone," Jenna exclaimed, relief evident in her voice despite the unsettling name.

His schemes distract the only two adults who would be able to protect the young people and draw them far enough away that they can be of no help. Book The New Tourist

Download or read book The New Tourist written by Paige McClanahan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliantly evocative, surprising, and page-turning exploration of how tourism has shaped the world, for better and for worse—essential reading for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the implications of their wanderlust. Through deep and perceptive dispatches from tourist spots around the globe—from Hawaii to Saudi Arabia, Amsterdam to Angkor Wat—The New Tourist lifts the veil on an industry that accounts for one in ten jobs worldwide and generates nearly ten percent of global GDP. How did a once-niche activity become the world’s most important means of contact across cultures? When does tourism destroy the soul of a city, and when does it offer a place a new lease on life? Is “last chance tourism” prompting a powerful change in perspective, or driving places we love further into the ground? Filled with revelations about an industry that shapes how we view the world, The New Tourist spotlights painful truths but also delivers a message of hope: that the right kind of tourism—and the right kind of tourist—can be a powerful force for good.

Book Wax Museum Movies

Download or read book Wax Museum Movies written by George Higham and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning over a century of cinema and comprised of 127 films, this book analyzes the cinematic incarnations of the "uncanniest place on earth"--wax museums. Nothing is as it seems at a wax museum. It is a place of wonder, horror and mystery. Will the figures come to life at night, or are they very much dead with corpses hidden beneath their waxen shells? Is the genius hand that molded them secretly scarred by a terrible tragedy, longing for revenge? Or is it a sinner's sanctum, harboring criminals with countless places to hide in plain sight? This chronological analysis includes essential behind the scenes information in addition to authoritative research comparing the creation of "real" wax figures to the "reel" ones seen onscreen. Publicly accessible or hidden away in a maniac's lair, wax museums have provided the perfect settings for films of all genres to thrillingly play out on the big screen since the dawn of cinema.

Book The Encyclopedia of Sustainable Tourism

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Sustainable Tourism written by Carl I Cater and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is the world’s fastest growing industry, and impacts globally upon ecology, economies, peoples, cultures and the built environment. Development, therefore, must be sustainable and sympathetic in order to preserve the environment and culture it exploits. Despite sustainable tourism being an area of considerable recent interest, there has been no synthesis of the diverse considerations of sustainable tourism, and the language and terms particular to this subject. An important resource for researchers of tourism, this reference work defines and explains terms associated with considering and preserving the environment, host peoples, communities, cultures, customs, lifestyles and social and economic systems.

Book My Saigon The Local Guide to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Download or read book My Saigon The Local Guide to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam written by Elly Thuy Nguyen and published by Elly Thuy Nguyen. This book was released on 2024-01-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience real Saigon: My Saigon 2024 Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) offers bustling streets, amazing walks, too-hip-for-you cafes, rocking music clubs, luxurious salons, explosively delicious restaurants, and indoor cat zoos. Saigon is Vietnam. It’s young, practical, crowded, and a little bit brash. Most visitors to Saigon see the same boring “attractions”: boring restaurants, tourist-trap markets, and War propaganda. Saigon has so much more to experience than tourists see. My Saigon gives you the insider track: the most amazing experiences, the cultural backstories, the practical go-to tips, the best coffee, the best food (far beyond pho and banh mi), the best hangouts, the coolest stuff, and hipsters, hipsters everywhere. Details about 90-day and multi-entry electronic visas to Vietnam (new as of August, 2023). Big-picture navigation. History your tour guides aren't allowed to mention. Good hotels for cheap, without hostels, bedbugs, and weird smells. Get mobile data up and running without being scammed. The best pho in Saigon: no, it's not the one in the backpacker district. Awesome, authentic, cheap restaurants where my friends and I eat -- and Tripadvisor has no clue about. Coffee. Did someone say coffee? 1930s coffee, street coffee, "specialty" coffee, all kinds of coffee: I'll tell you where. Hang out with Vietnamese people, munch on dried squid, listen to Viet Pop (if you dare). Make cool friends, date guys or girls, whatever flag you might fly. Bust out with Saigonese slang to make your new friends laugh. Watch out for Saigon's mafia: they run the streets, and they don't announce themselves. Don't unintentionally offend people by wearing a popular tourist souvenir t-shirt. You definitely shouldn't give money to beggars and street kids. Avoiding taxi scams in Saigon is so easy, but most tourists refuse to learn. My Saigon is a guide, a love confessional, an instruction manual, and an ode to the city.
