Book Managing Tourette Syndrome

Download or read book Managing Tourette Syndrome written by Douglas W. Woods and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood that has traditionally been treated with medication. Although available, many mental health professionals are not familiar with an effective behavioral therapy for tic disorders. This therapist guide outlines a safe and scientifically proven treatment that can help sufferers of TS and other tic disorders effectively manage their tics and improve their quality of life. The treatment described is an 11-session package for children and adults (ages 9 and older). Psychoeducation about tic disorders is blended with multiple components of behavior therapy, including habit reversal training (HRT), relaxation training, and function-based treatments. The primary goal of this program is to teach the patient effective tic management skills rather than to cure the tic disorder. At the start of the program, you will work with your patient to create a hierarchy of tics to be addressed in treatment. Each week, a new tic will be targeted and an appropriate function-based intervention implemented. Tic management skills are supplemented with relaxed breathing and progressive muscle relaxation exercises to help the patient combat anxiety. Relapse prevention and booster sessions help reinforce the skills taught in therapy and give the patient a positive outlook for the future. Complete with step-by-step instructions for conducting sessions, as well as lists of materials needed and copies of necessary forms, this guide provides you with all the information you need to effectively administer treatment. Book Georges Gilles de la Tourette

Download or read book Georges Gilles de la Tourette written by Olivier Walusinski and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th Century brought many medical advances and discoveries in neurology, with the famed Parisian La Salpètrière hospital at its center. Medical giants such as Jean-Martin Charcot, Joseph Babinski, and even for a short time Sigmund Freud, walked these halls, so it is a wonder that, an equal among these men, very little exists in the literature on Georges Gilles de la Tourette. This biography is the first comprehensive volume to delve into the life, scholarship, writing, and hobbies of the famed doctor. In Part One, we learn Georges' family history, follow his schooling and mentorship under Charcot, travel to the Worlds Fair of 1900, evade an attempted assassination, all before succumbing to death by syphilis. Part Two provides an in-depth analysis of his neurological and psychiatric works, notably the epynomous neurological disorder that will forever remain "Tourette's Syndrome." Part Three looks at the lighter side of Georges, inspecting his favorite past-times as poet, historian, and art critic. Part Four brings an extensive bibliography of Georges' complete body of work. Author Olivier Walusinski pulls together unpublished family archives, Georges' correspondence with the Parisian journalist Georges Montorgueil, journal articles, and police archives to shed an original light on the famed doctor's life and lasting legacy. These archives have never before been studied or made available to the public, making this one of the first and most comprehensive biographies available and a must-have for any medical library.

Book Extraordinary Disorders of Human Behavior

Download or read book Extraordinary Disorders of Human Behavior written by Claude T. H. Friedmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinicians have long been fascinated by the rare and exotic in med icine. Similarly, psychiatrists and mental health professionals have been intrigued by the uncommon and extraordinary syndromes which, despite their rarity, have much to teach us about the limitless forms of human adaptation. Of particular interest is the fact that fragments and partial expressions of these rare disorders are often encountered in the dreams and fantasies of the "ordinary" patient. For this reason, the understanding and insights collected in this volume are likely to have clinical usefulness far beyond those rare occasions when we encounter the exotic in its fully developed form. These disorders demonstrate the complex interplay between intra psychic dynamic forces and the cultural influences which act to shape overt symptomatology. The section on extraordinary syndromes from non-Western cultures demonstrates the universality of the psychody namic roots of human suffering, despite the seemingly strange furms in which this suffering is expressed. As clinicians we are too often restricted by ethnocentric attitudes and culturally determined stereotypes. This volume provides a stimulating and enjoyable opportunity to reach beyond those limitations.
