Book Fracture Strength of Electron Beam Welded Ti6a1 4v and Ti 5a1 2 5sn Alloy Sheet at 423f

Download or read book Fracture Strength of Electron Beam Welded Ti6a1 4v and Ti 5a1 2 5sn Alloy Sheet at 423f written by E. F. KALUZA and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of shallow cracks on the fracture strength of parent metal and electron beam welds in annealed Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys is presented in this report. Shallow cracks of varying size were induced in parent and weld metal specimens which were subsequently tensile tested at -423F. The critical crack depth of parent metal and electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4V was found to be 0.009 inch deep. As the crack depth increased beyond 0.009 inches, the parent metal and weld metal fracture strength decreased at approximate rates of 5,300 psi per 0.001 inch and 8,700 psi per 0.001 inch, respectively. The critical crack depth of parent metal and electron beam welded Ti-5Al-2.5Sn was about 0.008 inch deep. The fracture strength of parent metal and welds decreased at an approximate rate of 6000 psi per 0.001 inch of additional crack depth. Electron beam welds appear to offer no significant improvement in fracture strength properties over TIG welds. The critical crack size and fracture strength slopes were approximately the same for either process, TIG or electron beam. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Heat Affected Zone and Weld Metal Toughness in Selected Steels Phase II

Download or read book Evaluation of Heat Affected Zone and Weld Metal Toughness in Selected Steels Phase II written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I reports on an assessment of a series of submerged arc welds prepared using 2 different wire-flux combinations giving weld metals alloyed with Ti-B, and Mo respectively and using different procedural variables such as heat input, post weld heat treatment, interpass temperature and joint restraint. Volume 2 explains the CVN and CTOD toughness of 4 gas metal arc welds prepared using Argon-5% carbon dioxide shielding gas and 3 consumable wires giving weld deposits alloyed with Mn-Mo, Mn-Si, and Ti-B respectively. All welds were made at 3.0 kJ/mm heat input, and the one with Ti-B weld metal was examined in the stress relieved condition also. The welds were examined for composition, strength, microstructure and inclusion distributions. Volume 3 examines a series of 14 welded assemblies prepared using the gas shielded flux cored arc welding process to examine the effect of welding procedural variables on weld metal toughness. All the welds were made using one of 3 different commercially available consumables and the Ar-25% CO2 gas shielding. Procedural variables studied included heat input, post weld heat treatment, and welding position lateral joint restraint. Their influence was assessed by microstructure characterization, deposit composition, CVN and CTOD toughness.

Book Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanism of Toughness Improvement of Laser and Electron beam Welds of V 4Cr 4Ti Following Postwelding Heat treatment

Download or read book Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanism of Toughness Improvement of Laser and Electron beam Welds of V 4Cr 4Ti Following Postwelding Heat treatment written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors are conducting a program to develop an optimal laser welding procedure for large-scale fusion-reactor structural components to be fabricated from vanadium-base alloys. Microstructural characteristics were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and chemical analysis to provide an understanding of the mechanism of the drastic improvement of impact toughness of laser and electron-beam (EB) welds of V-4Cr-4Ti following postwelding annealing at 1000°C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that annealed weld zones were characterized by extensive networks of fine V(C, O, N) precipitates, which appear to clean away O, C, and N from grain matrices. This process is accompanied by simultaneous annealing-out of the dense dislocations present in the weld fusion zone. It seems possible to produce high-quality welds under practical conditions by controlling and adjusting the cooling rate of the weld zone by some innovative method to maximize the precipitation of V(C, O, N).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.
