Book excerpt: SHOCK... First, the electricity goes—plunging the east coast in darkness after a devastating nuclear attack. Millions panic. Millions die. They are the lucky ones. AFTER SHOCK... Next, the chemical weapons take effect—killing or contaminating everything alive. Except a handful of survivors in a bomb shelter. They are the damned. HELL IS FOR HUMANS Then, the real nightmare begins. Hordes of rats force two terrified families out of their shelter—and into the savage streets of an apocalytic wasteland. They are not alone. Vicious, chemical-crazed animals hunt in packs. Dogs tear flesh, cats draw blood, horses crush bone. Roaming gangs of the sick and dying are barely recognizable as human. These are the times that try men’s souls. These are the tortures that tear families apart. This is hell on earth. The rules are simple: Kill or die.

Book God and the Problems of Love

Download or read book God and the Problems of Love written by Kelly James Clark and published by . This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious believers are often commanded to love like God. On classical accounts, God seems a poor model for human beings: an immutable and impassable being seems incapable of the kind of episodic emotion (sympathy, empathy) that seems required for the best sorts of human love. Models more conducive to human love, on the other hand, are often rejected because they seem to limit God's power and glory. This Element looks first at God and then divine love within the Abrahamic traditions-Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It will then turn to love and the problem of hell, which is argued as primarily a problem for Christians. The author discusses the kind of love each tradition asks of humans and wonders, given recent work in the relevant cognitive and social sciences, if such love is even humanly possible. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Download or read book The Book of the Civilised Man written by Fiona Whelan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A translation of The Book of the Civilised Man by Daniel of Beccles brings to light the social and cultural life of medieval people in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries through a previously little-known text. Known in Latin as Urbanus magnus, it is a complex and illuminating text which covers an array of topics related to social mores in the Middle Ages, including: how to be a good and moral citizen, how to dine courteously, how to maintain standards of hygiene, how to regulate your diet, and how to run your household. Often described as one of the earliest ‘courtesy texts’, this translation will reveal a text which cannot be easily categorised in any genre but is relevant widely for anyone with an interest in medieval life. An expansive text of enormous breadth, this translation will provide scholars new insight in areas such as social hierarchy, citizenship, morality, friendship, family ties, household administration, food consumption, standards of etiquette, and much more.

  • Author : Isabel Moreira
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-10-07

Download or read book Heaven s Purge written by Isabel Moreira and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of purgatory - the state after death in which Christians undergo punishment by God for unforgiven sins - raises many questions. What is purgatory like? Who experiences it? Does purgatory purify souls, or punish them, or both? How painful is it? Heaven's Purge explores the first posing of these questions in Christianity's early history, from the first century to the eighth: an era in which the notion that sinful Christians might improve their lot after death was contentious, or even heretical. Isabel Moreira discusses a wide range of influences at play in purgatory's early formation, including ideas about punishment and correction in the Roman world, slavery, the value of medical purges at the shrines of saints, and the authority of visions of the afterlife for informing Christians of the hereafter. She also challenges the deeply ingrained supposition that belief in purgatory was a symptom of barbarized Christianity, and assesses the extent to which Irish and Germanic views of society, and the sources associated with them - penitentials and legal tariffs - played a role in purgatory's formation. Special attention is given to the writings of the last patristic author of antiquity, the Northumbrian monk Bede. Heaven's Purge is the first study to focus on purgatory's history in late antiquity, challenging the conclusions of recent scholarship through an examination of the texts, communities and cultural ideas that informed purgatory's early history.

Download or read book Eis Peirasm n written by Federico Elmetti and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past two thousand years, theologians and biblical scholars have been furiously debating the correct interpretation of the sixth petition of the Lord's Prayer ("and lead us not into temptation"). Despite all the hypotheses proposed, no convincing solution has been found to date. In fact, every single attempt has crashed against insurmountable difficulties. Even within the church, the debate on this topic is far from settled. Recently, both France and Italy approved new translations that deviate substantially from the two-thousand-year-old traditional Latin version. Since God cannot be the one leading us into temptation (Satan is), it becomes necessary to reformulate the petition by hiding God's responsibility under convoluted permissive constructs. But can any of these interpretations have any exegetical justification? This book is an ambitious and reckless attempt--from the point of view of an outsider, of a theoretical physicist--to rethink the Lord's Prayer from the beginning, and with it, to come closer, if possible, to the authentic message of Christ. As a result of a rigorous, deductive, scientific approach that minimizes any hermeneutical bias, the meaning of the sixth petition will spontaneously emerge and appear to the reader in its simplicity and elegance.
