Book Torchbearers of Democracy

Download or read book Torchbearers of Democracy written by Chad Louis Williams and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this important, sophisticated, and original study, Chad Williams establishes the centrality of black soldiers and veterans to the struggles against racial inequality during World War I as no other book does. Torchbearers of Democracy sensitively examines the fraught connections between citizenship, obligation, and race while highlighting the diversity of black soldiers' experiences in fighting on behalf of a democracy that denied them rights and dignity. This is a major contribution to political, military, and civil rights history."--Eric Arnesen, George Washington University.

Book Torch Bearers of History Vol 1

Download or read book Torch Bearers of History Vol 1 written by Amelia Hutchison Stirling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torch-Bearers of History, Vol. 1: A Connected Series of Historical Sketches, From the Earliest Times to the Reformation The object of the following series of historical sketches is to give young readers some idea of the way in which the torch of history has been handed on in Europe from age to age and from nation to nation, beginning in ancient Greece, and coming down to modern Germany, where, with Luther, modern history may be said to begin. With this object, the writer has selected out of each of the great epochs some representative man or woman whose life was capable of forming an interesting story, taking care to connect the different sketches as far as was possible without introducing too much detail. It is perhaps scarcely necessary to say that the series does not profess to include all the torch-bearers of the long period, which it covers; but it was thought better to omit some, who would necessarily have been included in a complete series, rather than to run the risk of confusing or wearying the young readers for whom the book is intended. In the present edition, historical maps have been added at the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Like any bored eleven-year-old with an imagination, Prem makes fantastic wishes. So when his father drags him to a monsoon-lashed Mumbai, Prem know it's futile to dream of home. Instead, he wishes for a genie, a dragon and some superpowers. What he certainly doesn't wish for is a quest to save some gods who are at the brink of extinction. He finds that the gods' last hope lies in the hands of those who channel the mysterious power of the Vedas. Caught in a cosmic crossfire, with a talking fish, some inventive monkeys and a few unexpected allies, Prem learns of his true identity-as a Torchbearer. Can the Torchbearers stop bloodthirsty demons from getting their hands on the Nectar of Immortality and bring the gods back to power?

Book The Torch Bearers

Download or read book The Torch Bearers written by Bernard Victor Dryer and published by New York : Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1968 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tells of surgeon-aristocrat Mayoso Marti, an unconventional, contradictory man of enormous magnetism and courage whose intense loyalties to persona and principle draw him into a life of double jeopardy. One is a world of established wealth and power the other is one of hunger and adversity. Through Mayosoʼs burning commitment to the value of the individual human life, these opposite worlds are interlocked as the novel moves from a Connecticut mansion to a hospital faced with scandal, to a cathedral confessional, to the bullet-spattered avenidas of Caracas, to an American courtroom shocked into silence. Itʼs an emotional sage of abortion versus the Catholic faith.
