Book excerpt: The ionosphere is a layer of ionised gas in the upper layers of the atmosphere around the Earth that plays a critical role in satellite communication, military communication and space science. The influence that the ionosphere has on communication systems can be quantified if the distribution of the electron density within the ionosphere is known. Several methods and instruments to determine the distribution of electron density are currently being used: satellites, ionosondes, incoherent scatter radars and computerised ionospheric tomography based on dual-frequency GPS signals. The present study investigates a novel way of using GPS receivers on mobile platforms to achieve near real-time ionospheric characterisation over locations beyond the reach of land-based ionospheric characterisation methods. GPS observations were collected, pre-processed and inverted by means of tomography to generate three-dimensional electron density maps. These electron density maps were analysed and verified. The viability of using observations from a mobile GPS receiver for ionospheric tomography was investigated. The algorithms were verified by means of a model ionosphere and a simulated GPS receiver. Furthermore, electron density maps generated from GPS observables from a mobile receiver were verified against ionosonde-derived electron density profiles, static land-based GPS receivers and known high-frequency propagation paths using propagation path prediction. The results were evaluated and the conclusion was that, although some aspects still have to be addressed, a dual-frequency GPS receiver on a ship can provide useful ionospheric characterisation in areas which are otherwise poorly or not covered by land-based receivers.

Book excerpt: This work presents several detailed observations of the upper portion of the topside ionosphere and inner plasmasphere during low solar flux conditions using Jicamarca's VHF radar. This is followed by theoretical derivations and numerical simulations that aim to present the reader with valuable information and insights into this layer of the upper atmosphere. Measurements of ionospheric parameters are first presented followed by observations of a new class of non-thermal plasma density irregularities that manifest in the equatorial topside ionosphere and inner plasmasphere above Jicamarca in the nighttime and post-midnight sectors. Measurements of ionospheric parameters such as topside density, temperature, ion composition and transition height were acquired during the recent deep solar minimum and correspond to experiments run in October, 2019, February, 2020, and September, 2020. The main features observed are a large and extended decrease in noontime temperatures unlike that seen in studies at moderate solar flux levels, predawn ionospheric heating as early as 0300 LT, large day-to-day variability in the O+/H+ transition height, and negligible helium ion concentration at all altitudes. We also analyze the data in light of the SAMI2-PE model which shows less agreement with the data than at higher solar flux. The main areas of discrepancy with the data are outlined, such as the absence of significant predawn heating, less pronounced decreases in noontime temperatures, and much higher O+ fractions at high altitudes, particularly in September. A discussion is presented on bridging the discrepancies in future model runs. Novel techniques of clutter removal and noise power bias correction are introduced and described in Appendix A. The new class of plasma density irregularities observed in the topside ionosphere and inner plasmasphere in the nighttime and post-midnight sectors are distinct from equatorial spread (ESF) in terms of their morphology and because they exhibit strong spectral sidebands at the lower-hybrid frequency. The coherent echoes were observed in a series high-altitude radar experiments performed at Jicamarca utilizing long- and coded double-pulse modes and a dual-beam mode between the years of 2018 - 2022, overlapping both the deep solar minimum of 2019 - 2020, and a subsequent period of moderately low solar flux. Observations from archival long pulse topside experiments are also presented. Doppler shifts, zonal drifts, and longitudinal dimensions of the echoes are calculated. The coded double-pulse mode was used to measure the low-frequency characteristics of the echoes with fine range resolution. The long-pulse mode was employed for high-frequency spectral analysis which revealed the presence of strong spectral sidelobes at the lower-hybrid frequency. The mechanism underlying lower hybrid waves associated with these lines is subsequently investigated. We present numerical simulations which demonstrate the feasibility of an inverse energy cascade coupled with a short wavelength instability, i.e. the lower hybrid drift instability, in explaining the waves. An inverse cascade is required for short wavelength lower hybrid waves to extend to the 3 m wavelengths measured by the Jicamarca radar. The simulations were able to reproduce multiple features of the measurements.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) is the integrated electron density across a unit area. TEC is an important property of the ionosphere. Accurate estimation of TEC and TEC spatial distributions are needed for many space-based applications such as precise positioning, navigation, and timing. The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides one of the most versatile methods for measuring the ionosphere TEC, as it has global coverage, high temporal resolution, and relatively high spatial resolution. The objective of this thesis is to develop an algorithm for accurate estimation of the TEC using dual-frequency GPS receiver measurements and simultaneously estimate the receiver hardware bias in order to mitigate its effect on the TEC. This method assumes the TEC in the portion of sky visible to the receiver can be represented as a two dimensional sheet with an absolute value and spacial gradients with respect to latitude and longitude. A code-phase multipath noise estimation algorithm is integrated with the TEC estimation process to mitigate environmental multipath contamination of the measurements. The integrated algorithm produces an approximate map of local TEC using a single dual-frequency receiver while minimizing both multipath induced errors and the receiver hardware bias. The goal of this method is to provide an accurate map of the ionosphere TEC, in the region local to the receiver, without the need for a network of receivers and in the absence of knowledge of the receiver hardware induced bias. This thesis describes the algorithm, its implementation, and attempts to validate the method through comparison with incoherent scatter radar (ISR) data from low, mid, and high latitude locations.

Known as Multi-Instrument Data Analysis System (MIDAS), this technique is a tomographic algorithm that inverts dual-frequency carrier-phase measurements of Total Electron Content (TEC) to produce maps of ionospheric electron concentration in space and time. Using freely available GPS observation data from a large number of fixed dual-frequency GPS receivers, the MIDAS method has been very successful in mapping the horizontal distribution of vertical Total Electron Content (TEC) over the European region. There is, however, a latency of at least 24 hours in the availability of the GPS observation data. Furthermore, the density of receivers located on the mainland United Kingdom is very small. This makes it difficult to produce maps that show small-scale variations in vertical TEC over the UK. In this paper, we describe a project to produce detailed maps of vertical TEC in near real time over the mainland UK. Through a collaboration with BAE SYSTEMS, the UK Meteorological Office and the Ordnance Survey, a network of fixed GPS receivers will be used to facilitate the mapping of small-scale variations in vertical TEC. The GPS observation data from this network will be streamed directly to the University of Bath, where it will be processed using the MIDAS algorithm. It is intended that spatially detailed images of the ionosphere over the UK will be then available within one hour, using a purpose designed user interface.

Book excerpt: In 1995, the German Space Agency DARA selected the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) mission for development under a special support programme for the space industry in the new states of the unified Germany, with the Principal Investigator and his home institution GFZ Potsdam being ultimately responsible for the success of all mission phases. After three years of spacecraft manufactur ing and testing, the satellite was injected successfully into its final, near circular, almost polar and low altitude (450 km) orbit from the cosmodrome Plesetsk in Russia on July 15, 2000. After a nine month commissioning period during which all spacecraft systems and instruments were checked, calibrated and validated, the satellite has been delivering an almost uninterrupted flow of science data since May 2001. Since this date, all science data have been made available to the more than 150 selected co-investigator teams around the globe through an international Announcement of Opportunity. The scientific goals of the CHAMP mission are to gain a better understanding of dynamic processes taking place in the Earth's interior and in the space near Earth. These goals can be achieved by improved observation of the Earth's gravity and magnetic fields and their time variability with high-performance on-board instru mentation and by exploring the structure of the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere through radio occultation measurements.
