The objective, exploring different methodologies and related applications, recognized four major topics: Complex Models; Simulation Models; Distributional Models; and Deterministic Models. Focus is on the following issues: the state-of-the-art and practice, gaps between the arts and practices, ways to bridge the gaps, and future research directions. In the first chapter, papers can be found on Computational Nonlinear Models of Risk Assessment, Risk-Based Evaluation of Safety and Security Programs in Critical Infrastructure and Risk Assessment of Modes of Terrorist Attack. One of the papers in the chapter on Simulation Models is on Computational Models for the Simulation of Evacuations following Infrastructure Failures and Terrorist Incidents. Bayesian Belief Nets for Discrete and Continuous Variables and Development of Risk Based Software for Analysis of Power Engineering Accidents are two titles of papers in the third chapter of the book on Distributional Models. Finally, the fourth chapter on Deterministic Models focuses on Environmental Risk Ranking and more.

Book Perspectives on Enclosure Methods

Download or read book Perspectives on Enclosure Methods written by Ulrich Kulisch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enclosure methods and their applications have been developed to a high standard during the last decades. These methods guarantee the validity of the computed results. This means they are of the same standard as the rest of mathematics. The book deals with a wide variety of aspects of enclosure methods. All contributions follow the common goal to push the limits of enclosure methods forward. Topics that are treated include basic questions of arithmetic, proving conjectures, bounds for Krylow type linear system solvers, bounds for eigenvalues, the wrapping effect, algorithmic differencing, differential equations, finite element methods, application in robotics, and nonsmooth global optimization.

Book Advances in Stochastic and Deterministic Global Optimization

Download or read book Advances in Stochastic and Deterministic Global Optimization written by Panos M. Pardalos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research results in stochastic and deterministic global optimization including single and multiple objectives are explored and presented in this book by leading specialists from various fields. Contributions include applications to multidimensional data visualization, regression, survey calibration, inventory management, timetabling, chemical engineering, energy systems, and competitive facility location. Graduate students, researchers, and scientists in computer science, numerical analysis, optimization, and applied mathematics will be fascinated by the theoretical, computational, and application-oriented aspects of stochastic and deterministic global optimization explored in this book. This volume is dedicated to the 70th birthday of Antanas Žilinskas who is a leading world expert in global optimization. Professor Žilinskas's research has concentrated on studying models for the objective function, the development and implementation of efficient algorithms for global optimization with single and multiple objectives, and application of algorithms for solving real-world practical problems.

Book Symbolic Algebraic Methods and Verification Methods

Download or read book Symbolic Algebraic Methods and Verification Methods written by Götz Alefeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-02-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usual "implementation” of real numbers as floating point numbers on existing computers has the well-known disadvantage that most of the real numbers are not exactly representable in floating point. Also the four basic arithmetic operations can usually not be performed exactly. During the last years research in different areas has been intensified in order to overcome these problems. (LEDA-Library by K. Mehlhorn et al., "Exact arithmetic with real numbers” by A. Edalat et al., Symbolic algebraic methods, verification methods). The latest development is the combination of symbolic-algebraic methods and verification methods to so-called hybrid methods. – This book contains a collection of worked out talks on these subjects given during a Dagstuhl seminar at the Forschungszentrum für Informatik, Schlo€ Dagstuhl, Germany, presenting the state of the art.

Book Combining Fuzzy Imprecision with Probabilistic Uncertainty in Decision Making

Download or read book Combining Fuzzy Imprecision with Probabilistic Uncertainty in Decision Making written by Mario Fedrizzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the literature of decision analysis it is traditional to rely on the tools provided by probability theory to deal with problems in which uncertainty plays a substantive role. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly clear that uncertainty is a mul tifaceted concept in which some of the important facets do not lend themselves to analysis by probability-based methods. One such facet is that of fuzzy imprecision, which is associated with the use of fuzzy predicates exemplified by small, large, fast, near, likely, etc. To be more specific, consider a proposition such as "It is very unlikely that the price of oil will decline sharply in the near future," in which the italicized words play the role of fuzzy predicates. The question is: How can one express the mean ing of this proposition through the use of probability-based methods? If this cannot be done effectively in a probabilistic framework, then how can one employ the information provided by the proposition in question to bear on a decision relating to an investment in a company engaged in exploration and marketing of oil? As another example, consider a collection of rules of the form "If X is Ai then Y is B,," j = 1, . . . , n, in which X and Yare real-valued variables and Ai and Bi are fuzzy numbers exemplified by small, large, not very small, close to 5, etc.
