Book Topics in Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Topics in Electroweak Symmetry Breaking written by Patipan Uttayarat and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we discuss topics in electroweak symmetry breaking and related phenomena. A quick review of the Standard Model of particle physics is given in Chapter 1. There we also discuss its hierarchy problem and a possible solution-- the Littlest Higgs model. In Chapter 2 and 3, we show that the Littlest Higgs Model and its variants do not successfully solve the hierarchy problem. In Chapter 4 we explore the possibility of spontaneous CP violation in the Littlest Higgs and related models. Another topic that we explore is the existence of a light dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of a spontaneously broken scale symmetry, which is the subject of Chapter 5.

Book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking And New Physics At The Tev Scale

Download or read book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking And New Physics At The Tev Scale written by Timothy L Barklow and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an expanded version of the report by the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Beyond the Standard Model Working Group which was contributed to Particle Physics — Perspectives and Opportunities, a report of the Division of Particles and Fields Committee for Long Term Planning. One of the Working Group's primary goals was to study the phenomenology of electroweak symmetry breaking and attempt to quantify the “physics reach” of present and future colliders. Their investigations encompassed the Standard Model — with one doublet of Higgs scalars — and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model. These include models of low-energy supersymmetry, dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and a variety of extensions of the Standard Model with new particles and interactions. The Working Group also considered signals of new physics in precision measurements arising from virtual processes and examined experimental issues associated with the study of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for new physics at present and future hadron and lepton colliders. This volume represents an important contribution to the efforts being made to advance the frontiers of particle physics.

Book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking written by Mgr.Adam Smetana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this thesis the author contributes to the development of a non-mainstream but long-standing approach to electroweak symmetry breaking based on an analogy with superconductivity. Electroweak symmetry breaking is assumed to be caused by dynamically generated masses of typical fermions, i.e., of quarks and leptons, which in turn assumes a new dynamics between quarks and leptons. Primarily it is designed to generate fermion masses and electroweak symmetry breaking is an automatic consequence. After the summary of the topic, the first main part of the thesis addresses the question as to whether the masses of known quarks and leptons provide sufficiently strong sources of electroweak symmetry breaking. It is demonstrated that neutrino masses subject to the seesaw mechanism are indispensable ingredients. The other two parts of the thesis are dedicated to the presentation of two particular models: The first model is based on the new strong Yukawa dynamics and serves as a platform for studying the ability to reproduce fermion masses. The second, more realistic model introduces a flavor gauge dynamics and its phenomenological consequences are studied. Even though, in the past, this type of models has already been of some interest, following the discovery of the Standard-Model-like Higgs particle, it is regaining its relevance.

Book excerpt: The discovery of the Higgs boson is a major milestone in our progress toward understanding the natural world. A particular aim of my review is to show how diverse ideas came together in the conception of electroweak symmetry breaking that led up to the discovery. Furthermore, I survey what we know now that we did not know before, what properties of the Higgs boson remain to be established, and what new questions we may now hope to address.

Book Strong Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the Large Hadron Collider Era

Download or read book Strong Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the Large Hadron Collider Era written by Jared Andrew Evans and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the Large Hadron Collider collecting data, both the pursuit of novel detection techniques and the exploration of new ideas are more important than ever. Novel detection techniques are essential in order for the community to garner the most worth from the machine. New ideas are needed both to expand the boundaries of what could be observed and to foster the creative mindset of the community that moves particle physics into fascinating, and often unexpected, directions. Discovering whether electroweak symmetry is broken strongly or weakly is one of the most pressing questions to be answered. Exploring the possibility of strong electroweak symmetry breaking is the topic of this work. The first of two major sectors in this work concerns the theory of conformal technicolor. We present the low energy minimal model for conformal technicolor and verify that it can satisfy current constraints from experiment. We will also provide a UV completion for this model, which realistically extends the sector with high-energy supersymmetry. Two complete models of flavor are presented. This is the first example of a complete, consistent model of strong electroweak symmetry breaking. The second of the two sectors discusses experimental signatures arising in a large class of general technicolor models at the Large Hadron Collider. The possible existence of narrow scalar states that can be produced via gluon-gluon fusion is first discussed. These states can decay into exotic final states of multiple electroweak gauge bosons, third generation particles and even light composite Higgs particles. A two Higgs doublet model is proposed as an effective way to model these exciting states. Lastly, we discuss the array of possible final states and their possible discovery.

Book Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking

Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is a monumental achievement which very accurately describes almost all observed phenomena. However, the Standard Model is not complete without a mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking. The historically conventional mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking is the Higgs mechanism. However, the Higgs boson, as described in the Standard Model, has not yet been discovered and in fact is bounded to exist in a fairly narrow mass range. In addition, the SM Higgs suffers from fine-tuning issues associated with the fact that it is both an elementary scalar and that it has no symmetry to protect its mass from quantum corrections. Due to these problems, many models of physics beyond the SM have been proposed which can break electroweak symmetry and also avoid some or all of these fine-tuning issues. We examine a scenario where the Higgs is a bound state of an approximate conformal field theory, and has a scaling dimension greater than one. We show that such an unparticle Higgs (or Unhiggs) can still break electroweak symmetry and unitarize WW and fermion fermion scattering, but its gauge couplings are suppressed. We investigate the phenomenological consequences of the Unhiggs, and show that it can more easily avoid LEP bounds due to its suppressed gauge couplings. We also place theoretical and observational bounds on certain parameters in the model. Finally, we illustrate that an Unhiggs model has a reduced sensitivity of the weak scale to the cutoff, and can thus provide a solution to the little hierarchy problem.

Book Patterns of Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Patterns of Symmetry Breaking written by Henryk Arodz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conceptofspontaneous symmetry breaking plays a fundamental role in contemporary physics. It is essential for the description of degenerate ground states, massless modes, and topological defects. Examples are abundant in condensed matter physics, atomic and particle physics, as well as in astro physics and cosmology. In fact, spontaneous symmetry breaking can be re garded as a cornerstone ofa whole branch ofphysics which intersects the above mentioned traditionally distinct fields. In the year 2000 the European Science Foundation (ESF) started the Pro gramme "Cosmology in the Laboratory" (COSLAB), with the goal to search for and to develop analogies betweencondensed matterphysics, particle physics, and cosmology. Not surprisingly, spontaneous symmetry breaking is among the most useful notions in that endeavour. It has been decided that in the sec ond year of the Programme a School should be held in order to work out and deliver to a wide audience of students synthetic overviews of achievements and of current research topics of COSLAB. This idea has been supported by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division of NATO by including the School in the renowned series of its Advanced Study Institutes. The School, entitled" Patterns of Symmetry Breaking", was held in Cracow during 16-28 September 2002. It gathered 17 lecturers and about 60 students. The present volume contains notes ofmost of the lectures from that School. We hope that of the physics of spon it will convey to the reader the breadth and the beauty taneous symmetry breaking.
