Book Tomorrow s Trees Planting for the Future

Download or read book Tomorrow s Trees Planting for the Future written by Pobalscoil Cheannfhaola and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola (P.C.C.) is a community school located in the Gaeltacht area of Falcarragh in the beautiful North West of Co. Donegal. Every year, 2nd-year students who participate in the Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP), have the opportunity to get involved in the JCSP Make a Book exhibition. Students create a book based on a subject that is of interest to them and then display it alongside books created by students from schools all over the North West of Ireland. This wonderful showcase represents many hours of work by the students and their teachers and is a chance for students to exhibit their many skills and talents. Over the last few years, our school has been very fortunate to be able to collaborate with Pobal le Chéile, a local community development group in Falcarragh. This collaboration has been a very positive experience for the students and staff at P.C.C. and has served to help build links in the community. It has also given our JCSP students the opportunity to work with some of their greatly talented staff and learn so much through workshops, visits and talks. This year, Rang Eoin chose to create a digital book based around a tree planting project they undertook. The idea for this project came about through a donation of trees to the school and community from "Trees on the Land" which is a charity and not-for-profit project from the Green Economy Foundation in collaboration with The Woodland Trust in Northern Ireland. As a JCSP librarian, it is always a proud moment when students see their finished book for the first time and can celebrate the fact that they are authors, no mean feat at the age just of 14 or 15 years old.Sarah Ball, JCSP Librarian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All theories of social change, says Alves, rest squarely on the economic and structural forces operative in society at any given moment in history. Thus many of the proposals offered by today's futurologists fall considerably short of social revolution. They are, in effect, extrapolations from the functional matrix of our society. Like the dinosaurs who ""disappeared not because they were too weak but because they were too strong,"" our civilization is motivated less by the desire for internal growth and existential relevance than it is by blind outward expansion. We are determined by a triangle of interlocking systems, each deriving and giving life to the others: the power of the sword, the power of money, and the power of science. In this context, to be a realist is to accept the rules of the game, laid down by the power lords of our ""rational"" society, whose goals are war, production, and consumption. But the utopian mentality, argues Alves, wants to create a qualitatively new order in which economy must abandon the goal of infinite growth. The only way out, then, is to abort ""realism"" from the body politic and impregnate it with the power of the imagination. This book clears away the debris of realism and lays the groundwork for a constructive theory of creative imagination, moving us toward new forms of social organization where the community of faith can be found."

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking walk through Scripture by former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case that trees reveal more about God and faith than you ever imagined. “Christians looking to reconnect to the natural world will relish Sleeth’s passionate call to Christian stewardship of the Earth.”—Publishers Weekly Fifteen years ago, Matthew Sleeth believed that science and logic held the answers to everything. But when tragedy struck, he opened the Bible for the first time and was surprised to find that God chose to tell the gospel story through a trail of trees. There’s a tree on the first page of Genesis, in the first psalm, on the first page of the New Testament, and on the last page of Revelation. The Bible’s wisdom is referred to as a tree of life. Every major biblical character and every major theological event has a tree marking the spot. A tree was the only thing that could kill Jesus—and the only thing Jesus ever harmed. Reforesting Faith is the rare book that builds bridges by connecting those who love the Creator with creation and those who love creation with the Creator. Join Dr. Sleeth as he explores the wonders of life, death, and rebirth through the trail of trees in Scripture. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods—and through Scripture—will never be the same.

Book excerpt: Richard Sorabji presents a brilliant exploration of the history of our understanding of the self, which has remained elusive and mysterious throughout the spectacular development of human knowledge of the outside world. He ranges from ancient to contemporary thought, Western and Eastern, to reveal and assess the insights of a remarkable variety of thinkers. He discusses a set of topics which are at the heart of our understanding of ourselves: personal identity; memory; the importance of seeing one's life as a whole; the relation between self, intellect, will, and agency; self-awareness; the stream of consciousness; embodiment; death and survival. He rejects the view, found in various philosophical and religious writings, that the self is an illusion, and develops his own original conception of the self as essential to our ownership of our experience and our apprehension of the world.
