Book excerpt: Featuring illuminated manuscripts from nineteen Boston-area institutions, Beyond Words provides a sweeping overview of the history of the book in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as a guide to its production, illumination, functions, and readership. With over 150 manuscripts on display, Manuscripts for Pleasure & Piety at the McMullen Museum focuses on lay readership and the place of books in medieval society. The High Middle Ages witnessed an affirmation of the visual and, with it, empirical experience. There was an explosion of illumination. Various types of images, whether in prayer or professional books, attest to the newfound importance of visual demonstration in matters of faith and science alike."--

This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London’s Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the ‘sane other’, shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period.

Download or read book Queer Italia Same Sex Desire in Italian Literature and Film written by G. Cestaro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Italia gathers essays on Italian literature and film, medieval to modern. The volume's chronological organization reflects its intention to define a queer tradition in Italian culture. While fully cognizant of the theoretical risks inherent in trans-historicizing sexuality, the contributors to this volume share an interest in probing the multi-form dynamics of sexual desires in Italian texts through the centuries. The volume aims not to promote the mistaken notion of a single homosexuality through history. Rather, these essays together upset and undo the equally misguided assumption of an omnipresent heterosexuality through time by uncovering the various, complex workings of desire in texts from all periods. Somewhat paradoxically, a kind of queer canon results. These essays open a much-needed critical space in the Italian tradition wherein fixed definitions of sexual identity collapse. Queer Italia is the first and only work of its kind in Italian criticism. As such, it will be of interest to a wide audience of Italianists, medieval to modern, and queer cultural theorists.

Download or read book Friar Thomas D Aquino His Life Thought and Work written by James A. Weisheipl and published by Doubleday Books. This book was released on 1974 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The towering figure of Thomas Aquinas emerges with all his intellectual vitality in this definitive , up-to-date biography. Written by a leading scholar, and based on all the latest known facts of Aquinas’s life and works, its publication is a fitting commemoration of the seventh centennial of the death of Aquinas, one of the most influential thinkers of all ages.As comprehensive as it is readable, the book covers the man and his works as we know them today. The author develops the life of Aquinas in the social, political and cultural milieu of his age, eliminating many of the legends that have shrouded the man-legends that served more the needs of canonization than the needs of the true historian. Father Weisheipl stresses the close relationship between all the facets of Aquinas’s personality and his intellectual development, thus overcoming any tendency toward separating his “life” from his “thought”. The many movements and controversies in which Thomas was embroiled are drawn together with his doctrinal development, thus providing a lucid portrait of the whole man in the age in which he lived and worked. All in all, FRIAR THOMAS D’AQUINO is a major study on a major thinker, whose short life “fused the quiet of contemplation with the fever of activity.” A notable feature of this volume is the author’s attentive treatment throughout of the man and his environment as one. “A sound understanding of the man,” writes Weisheipl, “requires both an accurate grasp of his teaching and a thorough knowledge of the context in which he lived, moved, and had his being.” Included at the end of the text is a “Brief Catalogue of Authentic Works,” giving known place and time of composition together with the purposes and content of the work.”- Publisher

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Aquinas: His Personality and Thought Scholastic mind is probably not set for the task of translating any part of St. Thomas, the modern Scho lastic is very prone to read into his words variations of meaning that have developed in Scholastic tradi tion only after the thirteenth century. Where on a few occasions the German texts of Dr. Grabmann contained elucidating terms or phrases, rendering the thought of St. Thomas more clear to the modern mind, the translator followed suit, since there is probably no living scholar better versed in the study of St. Thomas and of Scholastic sources than Dr. Grabmann.
