Download or read book Geology of Building Stones written by John Allen Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Allen Howe's book, The Geology of Building Stones, written in 1910, was the first major reference work to feature information on the considerable range of building stones which were being used in the UK and which were still being quarried at that time. This important and useful publication, now reprinted by Donhead, offers very detailed information on the appearance and qualities of the various types of stone being used at that time, including granite, sandstones, limestones and other lesser known building stones, specific to certain geographical areas. It also includes a good introduction to the effects of stone decay, in particular the problems of pollution, frost and organic growth in the breakdown of stone. His chapter on testing of stone was very much ahead of its time, since nearly a century later Britain is only now starting to obtain its first standard tests for building stone, in the form of European Standards. This book will be a valuable source of reference for conservators, architects, surveyors, engineers and anyone seeking to identify stone in old or historic buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WIB GET OUT NOW Letter by letter, etched by an invisible hand, the warning formed across the back of the piano before Wib's eyes. People in Amstey say the old Morphy house is haunted, "has been for years. Everybody knows that." Wib, who once lived there, knows only one thing. The house is not safe. There are places in it he was told not to go: like the room of whispers in the cellar. All the rest is questions. Who are the three mysterious "sisters" who live there now? Why does the telescope in the cupola show places so far away and out of time? And the black dog that prowls the house at night, who is it hunting? Top of the list, who and what is Henry? An imaginary childhood friend, a ghost, or something stranger? None of that can keep Wib from the old Morphy house. He and Henry need each other. Henry to get free of what has him trapped. And Wib to find something hidden in the house: something stolen that he must get back, or nothing will ever be right for him again.

Download or read book The Location of Experience written by Adela Pinch and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to feel that works of fiction give us special access to lived experience. But how do novels cultivate that feeling? Where exactly does experience reside? The Location of Experience argues that, paradoxically, novels create experience for us not by bringing reality up close, but by engineering environments in which we feel constrained from acting. By excavating the history of the rise of experience as an important category of Victorian intellectual life, this book reveals how experience was surprisingly tied to emotions of remorse and regret for some of the era’s great women novelists: the Brontës, George Eliot, Margaret Oliphant, and Elizabeth Gaskell. It shows how these writers passed ideas about experience—and experiences themselves—among each other. Drawing on intellectual history, psychology, and moral philosophy, The Location of Experience shows that, through manipulating the psychological dimensions of fiction’s formal features, Victorian women novelists produced a philosophical account of experience that rivaled and complemented that of the male philosophers of the period.
