Book Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi Phytoplasma and Bacteria

Download or read book Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi Phytoplasma and Bacteria written by Aurelio Ciancio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on integrated pest and disease management (IPM/IDM) and biocontrol of some key diseases of perennial and annual crops. It continues a series originated during a visit of prof. K. G. Mukerji to the CNR Plant Protection Institute in Bari (Italy), in November 2005. Both editors aim at a series of five volumes embracing, in a multi-disciplinary approach, advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection, for a wide range of plant parasites and pathogens. Two volumes of the series were already produced, dedicated to general concepts in IPM and to management and biocontrol of nematodes of grain crops and vegetables. This Volume deals, in particular, with diseases due to bacteria, phytoplasma and fungi. Every day, in any agroecosystem, farmers face problems related to plant diseases. Since the beginning of agriculture, indeed, and probably for a long time in the future, farmers will continue to do so. Every year, plant diseases cause severe losses in the global production of food and other agricultural commodities, worldwide. Plant diseases are not limited to episodic events occurring in single farms or crops, and should not be regarded as single independent cases, affecting only farms on a local scale. The impact of plant disease epidemics on food shortage ignited, in the last two centuries, deep cultural, social and demographic changes, affecting million human beings, through i. e. migration, death and hunger.

Book Pseudomonas Syringae Pathovars and Related Pathogens

Download or read book Pseudomonas Syringae Pathovars and Related Pathogens written by K. Rudolph and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-06-30 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, research on Pseudomonas syringae pathovars and related pathogens has progressed rapidly, opening up many new avenues. The application of molecular genetics has provided new insights into determinants of pathogenicity and virulence. Progress has also been made in elucidating the chemical structures and modes of action of phytotoxins from Pseudomonas syringae; by establishing novel strategies for disease control; in biotechnological applications; by studying the resistant reaction of the plant with a combined biochemical and genetic approach; and in the development of new detection and identification methodologies as tools in epidemiological studies. With such rapid advances it becomes more and more difficult to keep abreast of the developments and concepts within disciplines, all involving research on pathovars of P. syringae. In an attempt to provide a balanced overview, recent developments in these rapidly expanding fields have been critically reviewed at the beginning of each chapter by internationally renowned experts. Our comprehensive coverage has been made possible because all the contributors to this volume presented their latest findings at the `5th International Conference on Pseudomonas syringae Pathovars and Related Pathogens' in Berlin, September 3-8, 1995. In this way, it was possible to bring together contributions from a wide range of fields including phytopathology, genetics, bacteriology, plant breeding, plant protection, and taxonomy. This book is not intended simply as a record of the proceedings of the Berlin Conference, but as an extension of recent findings and hypotheses put forward at the meeting. All papers published in this volume have been reviewed by the Editors.

Book Seed Biology Based Interventions for Enhanced Integrated Crop Management in Tomato Production by Small Scale Farmers in the Morogoro Region Tanzania

Download or read book Seed Biology Based Interventions for Enhanced Integrated Crop Management in Tomato Production by Small Scale Farmers in the Morogoro Region Tanzania written by Hossea Dunstan Mtui and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Laboratory and field studies evaluating different tomato seed sources used by small scale farmers in the Morogoro region of Tanzania were conducted in 2005-2006. The seed sources used in our experiments were commercial 'Tanya' and 'Cal J' cultivars and 'Tanya G1' and 'Tanya G2' as farmer-saved seeds. Seed treatments were performed (hot water, chlorine and Ridomil) and untreated seeds were used as control. In the laboratory, seedlots were assessed for quality and the presence of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (CMM), Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (XCV) and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (PST) seedborne bacteria pathogens. The effects of seed treatments on tomato seed germination and seedling vigor as well as reductions in pathogen contamination on the seeds were assessed. 'Tanya' seedlots had higher germination percentages than 'Cal 3' and seed treatments resulted in gains in germination percentage. All three seed treatments improved tomato seedling vigor compared to control and chlorine seed treatment led to higher seedling dry matter accumulation. All seedlots assessed were contaminated with seedborne bacteria pathogens. Hot water and chlorine seed treatments significantly reduced seed pathogen contamination. Assessment of tomato seedling vigor, survival index and disease severity in the field revealed the 'Tanya G2' seedlot had lower vigor and survival index values. Hot water and chlorine seed treatments reduced bacterial leaf spot and speck incidence in the field. These treatments also led to plants with superior vigor in the field. Organic mulch significantly reduced bacterial speck incidence and improved plant vigor (p=0.0097; 0.0044). Commercial 'Tanya' and 'Tanya G1' gave higher tomato marketable yields compared to 'Cal J and 'Tanya G2' which did not differ. Seedlots treated with chlorine and hot water gave higher marketable yields per acre. Number of fruits per plant, fruit weight and marketable fruit yield was higher for plants grown in mulched plots compared to bare ground (p=
