Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Tanton Towers! Explore the eccentric, history-filled house, take tea in the café . . . and visit the site of a recent murder?! First in a delightful new traditional British cozy mystery series. Everyone told Cara Shelly that she was crazy to set up a café in the shadow of eccentric Kentish stately home Tanton Towers. But now, three years later, the forty-something single mother can’t believe her good luck. The Happy Huffkin café is thriving, and Cara considers the Tanton Towers staff – and its equally eccentric owners, Max and Alison – to be more like family than colleagues. Three cheers for Tanton Towers! But one beautiful summer evening, when Cara’s hard at work clearing up after closing time, Alison comes hurtling down to the café to beg her for help. It’s trouble – and of the worst kind. Daphne Hanson, queen of the Towers’ costume-clad dancing troupe – and the greatest nosy parker in Kent – is lying dead in the orangery. Strangled! But by whom? And why? Determined that the culprit should not be one of her friends, and suspicious of the detective assigned the case – the deeply annoying, and annoyingly attractive DCI Andrew Mitchem – Cara launches her own investigation. But the more secrets she uncovers, the more she’s forced to consider the unthinkable: that one of her dear friends could be the killer . . . Fans of Richard Osman, M.C. Beaton, Simon Brett, and Nancy Atherton won’t want to miss this charming British cozy with a twist of romance!

Book Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscripts 1558 1640

Download or read book Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscripts 1558 1640 written by H. R. Woudhuysen and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1996-05-23 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern study of the production and circulation of manuscripts during the English Renaissance. H.R. Woudhuysen examines the relationship between manuscript and print, looks at people who lived by their pens, and surveys authorial and scribal manuscripts, paying particular attention to the copying of verse, plays, and scholarly works by hand. It investigates the professional production of manuscripts for sale by scribes such as Ralph Crane and Richard Robinson. The second part of the book examines Sir Philip Sydney's works in the context of Woudhuysen's research, discussing all Sidney's important manuscripts, and seeking to assess his part in the circulation of his works and his role in the promotion of a scribal culture. A detailed examination of the manuscripts and early prints of his poems, his Arcadias, and of Astrophil and Stella shed new light on their composition, evolution, and dissemination, as well as on Sidney's friends and admirers.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. The Sins in Common Life. THERE is no popular literature of the Middle Ages extant, which quite corresponds to the religious plays in influence over the lives of the common people: but the man who, outside the plays, was the great moving force in religious England of the fourteenth century was John Wycliffe (1325-1 384?), and there is in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, a MS. reputed to be by him on the Seven Deadly Sins. It is of parchment, six-and-a-half by four-and-a-half inches in diameter, in small handwriting, containing thirtytwo lines to a page. It is catalogued as "WiclifFs Tracts: The Creed and the Seven Deadly Sins," and the evidence as to its authorship was sufficient to satisfy Dr. Thomas Arnold, and to cause him to include it in his "Select English Works of Wycliffe." But Wycliffe had all the qualities and literary methods of a successful journalist, and if he lived to-day would almost certainly be a leader writer for the popular press, whereas this treatise--especially if it is read by the side of the prose treatise of Chaucer--is deadly dull. Even Wycliffe's name, supposing it to be by him, could hardly have made it popular, and we have to look elsewhere to trace the influence of the Sins in common life. In the year 1493 tnere was published in Paris a remarkable volume entitled "Le Compost et kalendrier des bergiers," which ten years later (1503) was translated into English at the cost of Richard Pynson by the title of "The Kalendar of Shepherds." It was a most popular book in France, and it speedily became popular in England, and there is no wonder in this, for it is perhaps one of the most interesting books which the fifteenth century produced. The name of its author, or authors, is unknown, but they...
