Hiromi Tsuchiya Dollase examines the role that magazines have played in the creation and development of the concept of shōjo, the modern cultural identity of adolescent Japanese girls. Cloaking their ideas in the pages of girls’ magazines, writers could effectively express their desires for freedom from and resistance against oppressive cultural conventions, and their shōjo characters’ “immature” qualities and social marginality gave them the power to express their thoughts without worrying about the reaction of authorities. Dollase details the transformation of Japanese girls’ fiction from the 1900s to the 1980s by discussing the adaptation of Western stories, including Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, in the Meiji period; the emergence of young female writers in the 1910s and the flourishing girls’ fiction era of the 1920s and 1930s; the changes wrought by state interference during the war; and the new era of empowered postwar fiction. Book excerpt: The word prosody of Tokyo Japanese is often labeled as pitch accent, and is characterized by a steep fall in F0 from the accented mora into the following unaccented mora. The description of Japanese pitch accent in earlier research was primarily based on the observation of a small set of minimal pairs that differed only by pitch accent, and its bearing on the perception of pitch accent was not clear. This book attempts to overcome these limitations by conducting production and perception experiments using a larger set of minimal pairs. It first examines whether earlier descriptions of Japanese pitch accent hold generally true in Japanese by thoroughly searching minimal pairs in an electronic database. It then conducts a perception study to examine whether acoustic differences found between the minimal pairs are used by listeners in word identification. The results show that some acoustic properties related to pitch accent were not used in auditory identification, underscoring the need to look at both production and perception in studying speech. This volume also includes a short review on the literature of Japanese pitch accent. The book is ideal for those interested in the issues related to phonetics and the perception of accent and word prosody.

Book excerpt: This book is a considerable revision and extension of my thesis for The Ohio State University completed in 1981: A Phrase Structural Analysis of the Japanese Language (Gunji 1981a). The book discusses some of the major grammatical constructions of Japanese in a version of phrase structure grammar called Japanese Phrase Structure Grammar (JPSG), which is loosely based on such frameworks for phrase structure grammar as Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). Particular emphasis is placed on the binding and control of pronouns (both implicit - "zero" - and explicit ones, including reflexives) in complementation structures (chapter 4) and adjunction structures (chapter 5). Even though this book started as a revision of my 1981 thesis, the resultant book has few traces of my thinking then. The 1981 thesis was closely related to an early version of GPSG, which was then at a very preliminary stage, and I had only a few preprints of papers by Gerald Gazdar and others to read. GPSG itself has evolved during the past. several years, culminating in a book published last year (Gazdar, Klein, Pullum, and Sag 1985), which differs from the early theory in many ways.
