Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the scoping studies performed as the initial part of the program to produce a conceptual design for a Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor (EPR). The EPR as considered in this study is to employ all systems necessary for significant electric power production at continuous high duty cycle operation; it is presently scheduled to be the final technological step before a Demonstration Reactor Plant (Demo). The scoping study tasks begin with an exploration and identification of principal problem areas and then concentrate on consideration and evaluation of alternate design choices for each of the following major systems: Plasma Engineering and Physics, Nuclear, Electromagnetics, Neutral Beam Injection, and Tritium Handling. In addition, consideration has been given to the integration of these systems and requirements arising out of their incorporation into an EPR. One intent of this study is to document the paths explored in search of the appropriate EPR characteristics. To satisfy this intent, the explorations are presented in chart form outlining possible options in key areas with extensive supporting footnotes. An important result of the scoping study has been the development and definition of an EPR reference design to serve as (1) a common focus for the continuing design study and (2) a guide for associated development programs. In addition, the study has identified research and development requirements essential to facilitate the successful conceptual design, construction, and operation of an EPR.

Book Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Conceptual Design

Download or read book Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Conceptual Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conceptual design has been developed for a tokamak Experimental Power Reactor to operate at net electrical power conditions with a plant capacity factor of 50 percent for 10 years. The EPR operates in a pulsed mode at a frequency of approximately 1/min., with an approximate 75 percent duty cycle, is capable of producing approximately 72 MWe and requires 42 MWe. The annual tritium consumption is 16 kg. The EPR vacuum chamber is 6.25 m in major radius and 2.4 m in minor radius, is constructed of 2-cm thick stainless steel, and has 2-cm thick detachable, beryllium-coated coolant panels mounted on the interior. An 0.28 m stainless steel blanket and a shield ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 m surround the vacuum vessel. The coolant is H2O. Sixteen niobium-titanium superconducting toroidal-field coils provide a field of 10 T at the coil and 4.47 T at the plasma. Superconducting ohmic-heating and equilibrium-field coils provide 135 V-s to drive the plasma current. Plasma heating is accomplished by 12 neutral beam-injectors, which provide 60 MW. The energy transfer and storage system consists of a central superconducting storage ring, a homopolar energy storage unit, and a variety of inductor-converters.

Book Oak Ridge Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Study 1976 Part I EPR Summary

Download or read book Oak Ridge Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Study 1976 Part I EPR Summary written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor (EPR) has been performed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the Energy Research and Development Administration Division of Magnetic Fusion Energy (ERDA-DMFE) over a two-year period. This second year's work builds integrally upon the earlier efforts. Therefore, the following format has been adopted for this report. Part 1, entitled ''EPR Summary, '' contains a brief discussion of all facets of the work done this year. The technical areas discussed in Part 1 include the Reference Design itself; the underlying plasma engineering base; the supporting technical evaluations in the areas of magnet systems, nuclear engineering, and general engineering; and the major research, development, and demonstration needs that have been identified. Each of these areas is then discussed fully in separate technical memoranda, which have been issued as Parts 2-6. Where appropriate, the essential elements of previous interim reports have been included in order to provide a self-consistent, readable report. These earlier reports, Basic Considerations and Initiation of Studies (ORNL/TM-4853), EPR Scoping Study (ORNL/TM-5038), and EPR Reference Design (ORNL/TM-5042), can be consulted for a more complete discussion of the entire study.

Book Tokamak Reactors for Breakeven

Download or read book Tokamak Reactors for Breakeven written by H. Knoepfel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tokamak Reactors for Breakeven: A Critical Study of the Near-Term Fusion Reactor Program presents all possible aspects concerning the Tokamak line of research. This book examines the many significant implications of fusion research programs. Organized into five parts encompassing 29 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the mechanisms of anomalous loss in existing machines. This text then examines the environmental problems related to the use of large quantities of tritium. Other chapters consider the technology of superconducting Tokamak magnets, which provides challenging tasks both for specific developments in laboratories and hardware construction in industry. This book discusses as well the established program goal of the fusion program to develop and demonstrate pure fusion central electric power stations for commercial applications. The final chapter deals with the two types of reactors, namely, the liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBR) and the high temperature reactors (HTR). This book is a valuable resource for scientists, engineers, and technologists.

Book The Quest for a Fusion Energy Reactor

Download or read book The Quest for a Fusion Energy Reactor written by Weston Stacey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Geneva Superpower Summit in November 1985, Secretary of the former Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Regan agreed to pursue an international effort to develop fusion energy for peaceful purposes. At a time when tension between these cold war nations was very high, how were these leaders able to come together to work towards making nuclear fusion a feasible energy source? The Quest for a Fusion Energy Reactor is the story of the INTOR Workshop (INternational TOkamak Reactor) which brought together scientists and engineers from Europe, Japan, the United States, and the (then) USSR from 1978 to 1988 to share their individual research and work cooperatively on the design and development possibilities for harnessing nuclear energy. Drawing on his insights while serving as Vice Chairman of the INTOR Workshop, Weston Stacey offers an insider's account of both the participants' technical work and their fascinating political interactions under the blanket of the cold war. An accessible presentation of their research on the viability of designing, constructing, and operating a Tokamak experimental power reactor is combined with personal anecdotes of the obstacles Workshop leaders and participants faced as they strove to make progress on the global future of nuclear fusion technology while balancing their own countries' priorities. The Workshop led to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), construction of which began in 2009 with the goal of demonstrating the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes plasma engineering studies made in support of a revised version of a tokamak experimental power reactor (EPR). These include: (1) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium and stability calculations, which establish the ranges of .beta./sub t/ and the corresponding MHD parameters; (2) particle and power balance calculations, which are used for sizing and trade-off studies; and (3) burn cycle dynamics calculations, which determine start-up and driving systems requirements and reactor net power output. The resulting EPR reference design is described.
