Book Effects of Energetical Particles on Ballooning Modes in High Temperature Tokamaks

Download or read book Effects of Energetical Particles on Ballooning Modes in High Temperature Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work done by Science Applications International Corporation to study the effects of energetic particles on the microstability of a high temperature tokamak. The effects of an energetic population on ballooning modes in a large aspect ratio, shifted circular flux surface tokamak equilibrium are investigated with the newly developed gryokinetic numerical technique. The gryokinetic equations for the background ion and electron, as well as that of the energetic population are solved directly as an initial problem. The energetic particles are modeled with a slow-down distribution in energy. It is found that the ballooning mode stability of the plasma with an energetic species of increasing concentration does not differ much from an increase in the background plasma beta, except for possible energetic particle drift resonances. This result is encouraging to the idea that energetic particles such as alphas may be used to stabilize the ballooning modes in a fusion reactor.

Book Effects of Trapped Alpha Particles on Ballooning Modes in Tokamaks

Download or read book Effects of Trapped Alpha Particles on Ballooning Modes in Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of a trapped, precessing alpha particle population on ballooning modes are examined for a large-aspect-ratio, shifted circular flux surface tokamak equilibrium. The alphas are modeled in the deeply trapped limit and with a Maxwellian distribution in energy. The resulting kinetic ballooning equation is solved numerically, and the dependence of the eigenvalues and stability boundaries on shear, background pressure gradient, and ratio of hot to background temperatures and densities is investigated. In the low-frequency regime (.omega. “.omega./sub dH/ = alpha precessional drift frequency), the alpha component has a stabilizing influence, while in the intermediate-frequency range (.omega. less than or equal to .omega./sub dH/) the alphas destabilize ballooning modes through interaction with the trapped particle precessional drift resonance. Parameter ranges that should be typical of alpha production in near-term tokamak devices such as the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) are considered.

Book Pressure Profile Effects on the Ballooning Mode Stability of the FED Tokamak

Download or read book Pressure Profile Effects on the Ballooning Mode Stability of the FED Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative dependence of ideal ballooning instability on the pressure profile is studied in a flux-conserving sequence of equilibria with parameters representative of the Fusion Engineering Device (FED). The instability region based on a pressure profile with an exponential dependence on the poloidal flux suggests an improved profile through which a significant increase in the stable beta value is realized. The corresponding change in the pressure function appears to be relatively small in real space. Computational results indicate that the design value of beta in the FED may be achieved and suggest that for sufficiently optimized pressure profiles, ideal high-n MHD stability limits may not have been exceeded in present tokamaks.

Book Kinetic Analysis of MHD Ballooning Modes in Tokamaks

Download or read book Kinetic Analysis of MHD Ballooning Modes in Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the stability properties of the appropriate kinetically generalized form of MHD ballooning modes together with the usual trapped-particle drift modes is presented. The calculations are fully electromagnetic and include the complete dynamics associated with compressional ion acoustic waves. Trapped-particle effects along with all forms of collisionless dissipation are taken into account without approximations. The influence of collisions is estimated with a model Krook operator. Results from the application of this analysis to realistic tokamak operating conditions indicate that unstable short-wavelength modes with significant growth rates can extend from .beta. = 0 to value above the upper ideal-MHD-critical-beta associated with the so-called second stability regime. Since the strength of the relevant modes appears to vary gradually with .beta., these results support a soft beta limit picture involving a continuous (rather than abrupt or hard) modification of anomalous transport already present in low-.beta.-tokamaks. However, at higher beta the increasing dominance of the electromagnetic component of the perturbations indicated by these calculations could also imply significantly different transport scaling properties.

Thermonuclear fusion research using the confinement device tokamak represents one of the most prominent science projects in the second half of the 20th century. International Tokamak Community is now committing significant effort and funds to experiments with burning plasma, hot and dense enough to produce significant nuclear fusion reactions. The methods used to enhance tokamak performance have a profound and immediate effect on machine design. This book provides an up-to-date account of research in tokamak fusion and puts forward innovative ideas in confinement physics.

Book Effects of Isotropic Alpha Populations on Tokamak Ballooning Stability

Download or read book Effects of Isotropic Alpha Populations on Tokamak Ballooning Stability written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion product alpha populations can significantly influence tokamak stability due to coupling between the trapped alpha precessional drift and the kinetic ballooning mode frequency. Careful, quantitative evaluations of these effects are necessary in burning plasma devices such as the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor and the Joint European Torus, and we have continued systematic development of such a kinetic stability model. In this model we have considered a range of different forms for the alpha distribution function and the tokamak equilibrium. Both Maxwellian and slowing-down models have been used for the alpha energy dependence while deeply trapped and, more recently, isotropic pitch angle dependences have been examined.

Book Ballooning mode Theory of Trapped electron Instabilities in Tokamaks

Download or read book Ballooning mode Theory of Trapped electron Instabilities in Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing the ballooning-mode formalism, the two-dimensional eigenmode equation for trapped-electron instabilities in tokamaks is reduced to a one-dimensional integro-differential equation along the magnetic field lines; which is then analyzed both analytically and numerically. Dominant toroidal coupling effects are due to ion magnetic drifts which create quasi-bounded states. The trapped-electron response can be treated as perturbation and is found to destablize the quasi-bounded states.
