Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exiles in Babylon, or Children of Light I offer this little work to the public with a deep feeling that in attempting to draw some of the practical lessons afforded Oby the history of Daniel, I have done what I could, and not what I would. I have found the task more difficult than I had expected. The high integrity, piety, and courage of the prophet are virtues which in all ages adorn the children of light, but they were shown by Daniel under circumstances so peculiar, that there is some danger of its being for gotten that the prophet whom we reverence, is also an example whom we should copy. To us Visions are not granted, but the hope of Daniel 3 our hope; for as miracles are not worked, but the wonders of redeeming love are made known to as even more clearly. Her magnificent eyes, deep and liquid with light, looked not to Babylon with desire for its destruction. She dreamed rather of love than of hatred, as is the way of women, and, in her reveries, betook herself to desires that were 'not broad and far-reaching, national, and of consequence to the many, but to those that were personal, limited, and of im portance to herself, and to the one or two whose lives were at this time bound with hers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Wive, Vol. 3 of 3 "I will throw off this dead and useless past As a strong runner, straining for his life, Unclasps a mantle to the hungry winds." Alex. Smith. At last! at last! the hour has come. I have drifted into the position that, like a rock ahead, I have dreaded and avoided - and yet I knew it would - it must be so. What other end could I expect for a life such as mine has been - purposeless, wayward, bereft at its sunniest age of the motives and spurs for thought and action? And yet I must think now. I am in a predicament. How can I lift myself up out of it, and yet still remain the honourable gentleman I pride myself on being? How fulfil hopes and wishes newly born, thrilling and rapturous, yet stained on the first blush with crime? I must think. And how wearisome - perplexing - vain is all this thinking! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Brothers, Vol. 3 of 3 Alice Severn was very innocent and very young, - just over sixteen, - a child to all intents and purposes, - as everybody thought around her. Old Welby, who had taken to meddling in the padrona's affairs, with that regard which the friends of a woman who is alone feel themselves entitled to display for her interests, had been pressing very earnestly upon Mrs. Severn's attention the necessity of preparing her child, who had an evident and remarkable talent, to exercise it in public. 'Few people, indeed, have their way so clear before them, ' he had said repeatedly. 'It is the finest thing in the world to have a girl or boy with a decided turn. Book How the Irish Became White

Download or read book How the Irish Became White written by Noel Ignatiev and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...from time to time a study comes along that truly can be called ‘path breaking,’ ‘seminal,’ ‘essential,’ a ‘must read.’ How the Irish Became White is such a study.' John Bracey, W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, University of Massachussetts, Amherst The Irish came to America in the eighteenth century, fleeing a homeland under foreign occupation and a caste system that regarded them as the lowest form of humanity. In the new country – a land of opportunity – they found a very different form of social hierarchy, one that was based on the color of a person’s skin. Noel Ignatiev’s 1995 book – the first published work of one of America’s leading and most controversial historians – tells the story of how the oppressed became the oppressors; how the new Irish immigrants achieved acceptance among an initially hostile population only by proving that they could be more brutal in their oppression of African Americans than the nativists. This is the story of How the Irish Became White.
