Download or read book The Toe Tag Society written by Thomas Baldwin and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ride on the gray goose was short, perhaps less than an hour. It was long enough for your heart to set up a pounding rhythm against your rib cage, causing your breath to come in short, thudding gasps and your ear drums to hurt. It didn’t get any better on arrival as we were herded off the bus like cattle, with the new set of guards shouting, threatening, and barking orders. The only thing missing was the electric prod. They didn’t seem any happier to see us than we were to see them. After some preliminary bullying and yelling, they herded us, about fifty strong, into a cell built for about thirty. We were ordered to strip and hand out our clothes, including skivvies, through the bars, which was not easy considering that we were literally back-to-back and belly to belly. They passed out some paper tags, the kind you would use to label a piece of meat at the butcher shop, complete with string, which they had gotten from the prison morgue. It was a toe tag, just like the ones you see on TV. One pencil, the kind used at a golf course, was passed around so we could write our name on our tag. That way when, not if, we died, the tag would be attached to our big toe, and our next of kin could be notified. We stood there at attention, buck naked, and waited for our turn with the pencil. It was summertime and hot, so it stunk like the inside of a sewer in that cell. The prison was in the desert, and none of us had had a shower for a couple of days. The smell was enough to make your eyes water and the snot run. This was when the real fear set in. Those of us with knowledge of history recalled a certain ethnic group across the pond during a famous world war being treated this way. Deep down you knew that we were not going to be gassed, but about now your mind started to play tricks on you. Finally, they started to hand out prison jumpsuits by throwing them in your face and telling us to get dressed. This was a trick, considering we were still jammed in this one cell, and we tried not to become intimate with anyone. There didn’t seem to be any consideration of size, and some swapping did help a bit. However, there was no gas coming out of the ceiling. Your heart slowed down a bit, and you slowly started to regain a semblance of normal breathing. Welcome to the Big House.

Coming from twenty-five years in sales, Stan Lockshin had made the bold career transition to forever change his life. At the age of forty-six, there was an eager, burning question that prodded him: what will he do when he "grows" up? Nevertheless, he decided to go back to teaching, but of course, not at a public school, but rather at the California Department of Corrections, the institution where he worked until he retired. Covering the daily routine of working with inmates, security guards, and the teachers of the Education Department, Lockshin writes how it was to be placed in a yard full of inmates with lifetime sentences, as well as how to convert those who have failed themselves and society, killers who couldn't care less about an education, and turn negative activity to positive activity step by step. You will discover that, even with all the downsides, Lockshin was able to provide an optimistic success via the GED program.

Download or read book The Diener written by H. L. Riviere and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diener by H.L. Riviere The embalming machine pumped fluid into her and blood flowed red from the vein. Gradually, the venous blood became a lighter color. Her heart stopped but the machine pumped on. Soon the fluid flowing from the groin incision was almost colorless, like the embalming fluid. He stopped the pump and disconnected it from her body. She could wait in the cold room until tomorrow. He fished in his pocket for the metal disk, tied it to her toe with a fresh piece of string, and stood over his work. His heart was pounding and his breathing was rapid as if he had just run a race. What power, what absolute power, he thought. Something doesn’t seem right about the cadavers at the Portland University Health Center Medical School dissection laboratory—well, about one cadaver. Grace, director and primary lecturer of the medical gross anatomy course for fifteen years, knew something was amiss, but she couldn’t quite figure it out. She would have to ask Carl, the lab’s mortician, to get to the bottom of it. But Carl knows exactly what is happening in the lab. It’s where he’s disposing his victims.
Download or read book Archaeology Outside the Box written by Hans Barnard and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology Outside the Box makes contemporary archaeology germane to the general public as well as to researchers in other disciplines. In thirty-one richly illustrated chapters, a wide variety of projects is presented by an international group of anthropologists, archaeologists, architects, and artists. These aim to broaden the applicability of archaeology by reflecting on archaeological remains in novel ways, or by addressing contemporary concerns with archaeological theory and research methods. Demonstrating the fascinating and pertinent nature of archaeology, the authors go far beyond its definition as a discipline that unearths objects of ancient material culture. Many chapters also provide arguments relevant to the soul-searching discussions currently taking place within archaeology worldwide and accelerated by the Black Lives Matter movement and the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
