Book Working Today for a Better Tomorrow in Ethiopia

Download or read book Working Today for a Better Tomorrow in Ethiopia written by Emily Weedon Chapman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia has long prioritized creating more and better jobs as core to its sustainable and inclusive development. However, steady growth in the gross domestic product and gains in agricultural productivity in recent decades have not translated into better opportunities nor increased earnings for much of the population. The 2021 Labor Force Survey data reveal labor trends since 1999 and underscore these realities. Moreover, COVID-19 and other shocks have reinforced the disconnect between positive macroeconomic trends at a national level and stagnant incomes at the household level. Working Today for a Better Tomorrow in Ethiopia: Jobs for Poor and Vulnerable Households outlines how Ethiopia can leverage its social safety net programs to help poor and vulnerable workers earn more in today’s labor market. The government’s latest development planning policies focus on private sector growth and structural transformation to create more and better jobs. While these long-term reforms take hold, the jobs agenda also must include near-term measures to improve worker productivity in and connect people to jobs that already exist. Complementing cash transfers with capital, training, and other services can help workers earn more in their current work, diversify into new types of employment, or connect to available wage jobs. These investments can have an immediate impact for poor people in Ethiopia while also contributing to sustainable and inclusive development.

Book Constructing a Better Tomorrow

Download or read book Constructing a Better Tomorrow written by Nicholas Bearns and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this work fully dissects the United States budget, and a majority of social programs. By taking an in depth look at our current structure, we can recognize the problems, and begin a plan to change our broken systems. With problems being ignored by politicians over the last several decades, our nation is now at a crossroads. Either we come together and create a system that works, or our nation may cease to function all together. The only way to remove corruption, and fix our political system is by the implementation of a constitutional amendment. Seeing as how one is needed, the goal should be to fix as many problems as possible. For this reason, my amendment proposal will do the following: force Congress to make a balanced budget, raise the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour, increase benefits for Social Security and Disability, replace all health insurers with a single-payer system run by the Department of Health and Human Services, and restructure our federal election process and campaign contributions. Only by discussing solutions, can a plan be created to move our nation forward.

Book excerpt: The progressive movement is on the march in America and this accessible book points toward a destination. Sixteen for '16 offers a new agenda for the 2016 US election crafted around sixteen core principles that all progressives can believe in, from securing jobs to saving the Earth. Decades of destructive social, economic, and political policies have devastated poor, working, and even middle class American communities. It is now clear to everyone that the emperor has no clothes, that harsh austerity does not bring prosperity, and that the wealthy have no intention to see their wealth trickle down. Each generation is no longer better off than the ones that came before. America now needs jobs, infrastructure, a rededication to public education, universal healthcare, higher taxes on higher incomes, a more secure Social Security, an end to the rule of the bankers, stronger unions, a living minimum wage, better working conditions, an end to the prison state, secure reproductive rights, voter equality, a more moral foreign policy, a more sane environmental policy, and action on global warming. Sixteen for '16 is a manifesto which makes the argument for each of these positions, clearly, concisely, and supported by hard data. As ambitious as these policies are, they represent a beginning, not an end. The progressive agenda laid out in Sixteen for '16 charts a realistic path toward a better tomorrow.

Book Play to your strengths when presenting

Download or read book Play to your strengths when presenting written by Mark Laudi and published by Marshall Cavendish International Asia Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people still struggle with public speaking when there are many books and courses on the subject? There are two reasons for this: • Most presentation skills coaches are – by definition – gregarious extroverts who love nothing more than to be on stage or on camera. Yet, people who need presentation skills coaching do so precisely because they are not gregarious extroverts. Trying to teach introverts to be extroverts is an effort in futility. • Most presentation skills books are focused on tactics without taking presenters’ unique personalities into account. That’s like teaching right-handers to write with their left hand, and vice versa. This book celebrates who you are. It is about recognizing that everyone is different. It is about listening to your concerns about getting on stage, speaking on camera, or even just networking at a business event. It is about offering well-honed tactics that fit in with the person you are, without telling you to become somebody you’re not. No matter what personality you have, you can communicate. You can present. You can present well.

Download or read book On Decline written by Andrew Potter and published by Biblioasis. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Winnipeg Free Press Top Read of 2021 What if David Bowie really was holding the fabric of the universe together? The death of David Bowie in January 2016 was a bad start to a year that got a lot worse: war in Syria, the Zika virus, terrorist attacks in Brussels and Nice, the Brexit vote—and the election of Donald Trump. The end-of-year wraps declared 2016 “the worst … ever.” Four even more troubling years later, the question of our apocalypse had devolved into a tired social media cliché. But when COVID-19 hit, journalist and professor of public policy Andrew Potter started to wonder: what if The End isn’t one big event, but a long series of smaller ones? In On Decline, Potter surveys the current problems and likely future of Western civilization (spoiler: it’s not great). Economic stagnation and the slowing of scientific innovation. Falling birth rates and environmental degradation. The devastating effects of cultural nostalgia and the havoc wreaked by social media on public discourse. Most acutely, the various failures of Western governments in their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. If the legacy of the Enlightenment and its virtues—reason, logic, science, evidence—has run its course, how and why has it happened? And where do we go from here?
