Book The Soverane Herbe

Download or read book The Soverane Herbe written by W. A. Penn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soverane Herbe: A History of Tobacco Fifty years ago Tobacco in England was at its lowest ebb. Snuff was declining in favour, and the increasing practice of smoking was being opposed bitterly by Society. To drink tobacco was then far from being considered the gentlemanly accomplishment that it was in the reign of Elizabeth or the harmless hobby that it is now. Smoking was regarded as a low vulgar practice, to be indulged in by only artisans, Bohemians, and the scum of society. Only within the last twenty years has smoking regained the social position that it held in the golden age of Queen Bess and the stern times of the seventeenth century. It is no longer scorned and sneered at, nor its practice relegated to the stable. It has lived down calumny and survived the satire and frown of Mrs. Grundy and the death sentence of the medical profession. It has come again to be regarded as one of the greatest boons with which man has been blessed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tobacco Insanity and Nervousness Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tobacco Insanity and Nervousness Classic Reprint written by L. Bremer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco, Insanity and Nervousness There is no narcotic, either in modern or ancient times, which has been and still is, so universally in use, as tobacco, and there is none about whose action on the human body there is so much difference of opinion among the laity and the profession. Whereas, by some, it is looked upon as an immitigated evil, it is claimed by others, that its use is not without advantage. Hence, it has been condemned and commended in turns. Its friends have, so far, carried the day; its triumphal march over nearly the whole civilized sand uncivilized globe has been continuous. Without entering into preliminaries and details, I will state at the outset, that I side with those who, looking at the injurious effects collectively, consider it more harmful than alcohol, from the simple fact that its use is more general, its effects more gradual and less obvious, and that, from a moral point of view, it is in better standing. The breath of tobacco is held permissible and will be Condoned by all classes; that of alcohol is looked upon as odious and exposes its bearer in some quarters to social ostracism. Book The Tobacco Problem Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tobacco Problem Classic Reprint written by Meta Lander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tobacco Problem In bringing out the present edition of The Tobacco Problem, I desire to say that, while I have taken tobacco for my text, I have included all other narcotics, especially those used, at first, under medical prescription and continued until the servant becomes, not only a master, but a tyrant. I wish also to acknowledge the great kindness with which my book has been received, even by many devotees of the weed. I had hardly expected such a degree of sufferance. It is true that, out spoken as I have been, I have set down naught in malice, and have aimed to avoid unfair and nuwar ranted statements. Yet I am aware that it is well nigh impossible for one with strong convictions as to the use Of narcotics, to write a treatise on the subject which will not seem, perhaps to a large class, unreasonable and extravagant, if not absurd. Judging from the indications, the majority in Church and State are against me. Again and again have I been told that I injure the cause by demanding too much; that it is the abuse and not the proper use Of tobacco against which I should direct my efforts.
