Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardev Dange is suffering through a tumultuous year. He’s just been informed that the bank is going to foreclose on his house. His fickle daughter Birendra is on the verge of marriage, his son Emile is studying curses (while falling in love with a fellow male grad student), and his younger daughter, Dorothy, who’s deaf, is working at a tattoo and body piercing parlour and collecting stories from the older men languishing at her local hangout. And because he’s confined to a wheelchair, Hardev is dependent on his homecare worker, the kleptomaniac Rodriguez, to help him devise a plan to keep house and home together. In this modern, multicultural re-telling of King Lear, Uppal explores the vulnerability and complexity of family and inheritance. She exposes the tragic and comedic dimensions of our failures to communicate and the consequences of our betrayals, which result in disappointment and disillusionment, but also, unexpectedly, in moments of compassion and love.

Book Stem Cell Battles Proposition 71 And Beyond How Ordinary People Can Fight Back Against The Crushing Burden Of Chronic Disease With A Posthumous Foreword By Christopher Reeve

Download or read book Stem Cell Battles Proposition 71 And Beyond How Ordinary People Can Fight Back Against The Crushing Burden Of Chronic Disease With A Posthumous Foreword By Christopher Reeve written by Don C Reed and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a one-of-a-kind book: combining easy-to-understand science, in-the-trenches political warfare, and inspirational stories. It aims to give hope to individuals and families who suffer from chronic disease or disability; to point out how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference in the battle to ease suffering and save lives through supporting medical research; to share in “people talk” some of the amazing progress already achieved in the new field of stem cell research; to show how even such a magnificent success as the California stem cell program is under constant attack from ideological groups; to offer medical research as a force for international cooperation; to suggest how cure research lessens the need for the mountainous costs of endless care.Unparalleled background: the author has been involved in virtually every important stem cell battle (state, national, and international) since embryonic stem cell research began. The author works closely with Robert N. Klein, sponsor of the California stem cell program, the largest source of such stem cell research funding in the world. In addition, the author is an award-winning teacher as well as writer, and seeks to entertain as well as educate. His book is not only substantive, but also fun.The book would be a treasured gift: for anyone suffering an “incurable” illness or who is a caregiver for a loved one; for a college student considering a rewarding career in biomedicine; for scientists who want to protect and enhance their research funding; and for anyone who wants to see government respond to the needs of its citizenry. Chronic disease and disability are a prison: cure is the triumphant escape — wheelchairs should be for temporary occupancy only.

Book The Last and Greatest Battle

Download or read book The Last and Greatest Battle written by John Bateson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly every day an active-duty soldier in the United States military resorts to suicide, and nearly every hour a veteran does the same. In recent years the problem of military suicides has reached epidemic proportions, but it's all too easy for most of us to gloss over the headlines or tune out the details. In The Last and Greatest Battle--the first book devoted exclusively to the problem of military suicides--John Bateson brings this neglected crisis into the spotlight. Bateson, the former executive director of a nationally certified suicide prevention center, surveys the history of suicide in the United States military from the Civil War to the present day and outlines a plan to save lives-and ultimately end the tragedy of military suicides. He uses the stories of individual soldiers to illuminate the unique challenges faced by American troops today. Transitioning from the front lines to the home front is difficult for many service members, and many need help both during and after their deployments. But even though the military is spending millions of dollars on suicide prevention programs, record numbers of soldiers continue to take their lives. To that end, Bateson outlines a plan of action. If the military works to remove stigma, to make treatment more effective and more accessible, and to limit risk factors for suicide in the first place by taking measures like reducing the number and length of deployments and adjusting pre-deployment training to take into account the way that wars are waged today, an end to the problem of military suicide is as possible as it is essential.

Book We Fight Not Against Flesh and Blood

Download or read book We Fight Not Against Flesh and Blood written by Donald Evans and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we fight not against flesh and blood; it is about many agendas. Satan and the spirit world of spirit persons, demons, have set their goals to accomplish against Jehovah God's creation of the human race, which have brought spiritual conflicts across the earth and which the human race are not aware of. Human beings believe their fight is against flesh and blood, which it isn't. Our fight is against wicked spirit persons, demons, real and alive spirit persons, who have entered multitudes of human bodies to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals, which there are many. Neither age nor gender is no exception in accomplishing their goals. Children of all ages are in some kind of spiritual conflict. Why was prayer abolished out of their school system? Why is the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God not to be used or spoken of on such campuses? Why can't they pray in the name of Jesus when others around them pray to their gods openly? In these writings there are many answers to questions people in general like to know, but won't ask; even adults want to ask. I've been in spiritual warfare or conflict my entire life. I have seen Satan, the devil, several times, whom God revealed to me. Satan and demons are real spirit persons as any human being on the earth. I've dialogued with the devil, not knowing that it was Satan transitioned as a real person, a human being. God revealed to me who Satan was. He walks the earth today as a human being, which only God can identify Satan as a man, a real person, yet spirit being Satan spirit of deception in control, who passes the power of influence over every alcoholic and alcoholism throughout the entire world. The world needs to know the "truth." There isn't any medical cure for the alcoholic nor alcoholism anywhere throughout the entire world. Why isn't there? Because alcoholism is not a medical problem; it is a demonically controlled problem, controlled by alcohol of spirit persons. Demons who have entered human bodies and only by Jesus Christ's name can cure or cast these alcohol demons out of the human bodies. There is no other-I reiterate, there is no other prominent cure but in the name of Jesus Christ. Jehovah God is my witness of this truth and testimony. I was held in bondage and control for nearly forty years, demon-possessed and demonically controlled by alcohol demons, not knowing my condition until I called out to God and God cured me. I heard voices in my head for as many years; the voices also left. My cure came on March 18, 1984. I've never drunk nor had the urge to drink nor the desire to drink nor smoked another cigarette since that day. God is my witness of this testimony!

Book Iwo Jima World War II Veterans Remember the Greatest Battle of the Pacific

Download or read book Iwo Jima World War II Veterans Remember the Greatest Battle of the Pacific written by Larry Smith and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A vivid and compelling account by a true master of oral history.” —General James L. Jones, USMC (Ret.), Supreme Allied Commander, Europe On February 19, 1945, nearly 70,000 American soldiers invaded a tiny volcanic island in the Pacific. Over the next thirty-five days, approximately 28,000 soldiers died, including nearly 22,000 Japanese and 6,821 Americans, making Iwo Jima one of the costliest battles of World War II. In his most important work to date, best-selling author Larry Smith lets twenty-two veterans of the conflict tell the story of this epic clash in their own words. Many of these soldiers were no more than teenagers when they answered their country’s call, and yet the men relate the momentous events of this terrible conflict as if they occurred just last year, instead of more than half a century ago. Describing the initial charge across the treacherous black ash of the landing beach under heavy fire is Chuck Lindberg, the last survivor of the two teams that planted the flags on Mount Suribachi—a moment captured forever in Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photograph for the Associated Press. General Fred Haynes recounts his heroic attempts to keep order amid tremendous casualties on the battlefield. Woody Williams and George Wahlen, two of the battle’s twenty-six Medal of Honor recipients, tell their unbelievable stories, and Samuel Tso relates his role as one of the famous Navajo code talkers. Though the flags went up just days after the invasion, the fighting wasn’t over: through nearly eight miles of tunnels, thousands of Japanese troops defended the island despite hundred-degree heat, famine rations, and the overpowering stench of sulfur. To get both sides of the story, Smith interviewed the daughter of Captain Tsunezo Wachi, one of the most prominent Japanese survivors, and presents new evidence about the disappearance of the famed Japanese commander Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who waged a brilliant defense of the island only to allegedly commit suicide rather than submit to the Americans. Smith also investigates the controversy surrounding Rosenthal’s famous photograph of the flag raising, and he interviews bomber and fighter crewmen to hear firsthand whether they believed the terrible cost of capturing the island was truly justified by its strategic use as an emergency stop for B-29 Superfortress bombers. Through the story of Navy Cross recipient John Ripley, Smith brings the history of the island up-to-date—from its return to Japan in 1968 to the dramatic discoveries made in the caves of Iwo in the 1980s and the Japanese-American Reunion of Honor now held annually on the island. With dozens of photographs and maps, Iwo Jima is a stunning history of this emblematic battle, but it is also a personal history of the generation of soldiers, many now in their final years, who waged one of the most important wars in American history.
