Book Alpine Ecosystems in the Northwest Caucasus

Download or read book Alpine Ecosystems in the Northwest Caucasus written by Vladimir G. Onipchenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant geographical description of the area, syntaxonomy, spatial patterns, floristic richness, structure of plant communities in relation to soil properties and herbivore influence were described for a mountain region that is difficult to access. Seasonal, inter-annual, and long-term dynamics of vegetation are discussed on the base of long-term observations as well as pollen and phytolith analyses. Population biology of alpine plants is studied by combination of field observations and mathematical modelling. Plant population strategies and soil seed banks are described for alpine plants from several communities. Results of long-term ecological experiments (plant reciprocal transplantations, dominant removals, light limitation) showed the significance of competition and facilitation for community organization. Structure of soil algal and fungal communities is represented as well as mycorrhiza of alpine plants. Main animal groups (wild) history and modern nature conservation problems are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book is based on many case studies in the broad area of ecological studies and is derived from numerous sources originating from several countries. The book begins with discussions on morphology, stand structure, competition, mass and water balance at the stand level of vegetation as well as mineral cycles. A section deals with disturbances and management of agricultural as well as semi-natural systems. With the input of several authors, zoologists, botanists and geographers, detail is given to the eutrophication and pollution in terrestrial ecosystems. Included as well are discussions on the carbon cycle as it relates to current climate change and modern methods of remote sensing and geographical modelling. The book concludes with a chapter on urban and landscape ecology. The main feature of this book is that it includes most methods and tasks of modern ecology using case studies and incorporating all levels of integration from single plants and animals to populations and ecosystems.

Book My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus Classic Reprint written by A. F. Mummery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus I fear no contributions to science, or topography, or learning Of any sort are to be found sandwiched in between the story Of crags and seracs, Of driving storm and perfect weather. TO tell the truth, I have only the vaguest ideas about theodolites, and as for plane tables, their very name is an abomi nation. TO those who think with me, who regard mountaineering as unmixed play, these pages are alone addressed. Should they, in some dim after glow fashion, reflect the joy and frolic Of sunshine holidays, their utmost mission will have been ac complished, and pride will mightily inflate their author.
