Book To Set Before the King

Download or read book To Set Before the King written by Gertrud Graubart Champe and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, renowned chef and cookbook collector Louis Szathmary purchased a notebook written in German and dated 1905, containing more than two hundred recipes for soups, appetizers, main dishes, and a wealth of desserts, ices, and punches. This kitchen notebook, a concrete remnant from the paradoxical world of turn-of-the-century Vienna, belonged to a woman who played an extraordinary role in her society: actress Katharina Schratt, lavishly admired by crowned heads, industrialists, artists, composers and Franz Joseph I, emperor of Austria and king of Hungary. Schratt was his friend, companion, and confidante for thirty-two years, and these are the foods she served in her home. To Set before the King is really three books in one, Gertrud Champe has written an entertaining biography of Schratt and her glittering world. The carefully translated recipes themselves, from Little Croustades a la Talleyrand to Goulash a la Andrassy to Gingerbread a l'Elise are either comfortable and homey to soothe the highly regimented emperor or elegant and sophisticated to suit the palates of Schratt's more vivacious friends. Finally, working from Schratt's tantalizing aide-memoire, Chef Louis Szathmary has created almost a hundred updated Austro-Hungarian recipes that will bring the world of this European metropolis to the tables of today's cooks.

Book Before the King s Majesty

Download or read book Before the King s Majesty written by Raymond Chapman and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was a towering figure in the formative years of the Church of England. Averse to the puritanical spirit of the age, he helped to create a distinctive Anglican theology, moderate in outlook and catholic in tone. He believed that theology should be built on sound learning, he held a high doctrine of the Eucharist and he emphasised dignity and order in worship. His influence defines Anglicanism to this day.A devout scholar and gifted linguist, he served as Dean of Westminster and under James I became Bishop of Chichester, then Ely and finally Winchester. In 1604 he was appointed as one of the translators of the Authorized Version and became responsible for most of the Old Testament. It was as a preacher that he achieved the greatest fame and he was a favourite of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I. His spiritual classic, "The Private Devotions of Lancelot Andrewes" was for personal prayer what the "Book of Common Prayer" was for the worship of the Church. Here is a wide selection from his writings and a general introduction.

Book John Eliot s Mission to the Indians before King Philip s War

Download or read book John Eliot s Mission to the Indians before King Philip s War written by Richard W. Cogley and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No previous work on John Eliot's mission to the Indians has told such a comprehensive and engaging story. Richard Cogley takes a dual approach: he delves deeply into Eliot's theological writings and describes the historical development of Eliot's missionary work. By relating the two, he presents fresh perspectives that challenge widely accepted assessments of the Puritan mission. Cogley incorporates Eliot's eschatology into the history of the mission, takes into account the biographies of the proselytes (the "praying Indians") and the individual histories of the Christian Indian settlements (the "praying towns"), and corrects misperceptions about the mission's role in English expansion. He also addresses other interpretive problems in Eliot's mission, such as why the Puritans postponed their evangelizing mission until 1646, why Indians accepted or rejected the mission, and whether the mission played a role in causing King Philip's War. This book makes signal contributions to New England history, Native American history, and religious studies.

This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection of "THE COMPLETE SHORT STORIES OF NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE (Illustrated)” has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Excerpts: "I am afraid this ghost story will bear a very faded aspect when transferred to paper. Whatever effect it had on you, or whatever charm it retains in your memory, is, perhaps, to be attributed to the favorable circumstances under which it was originally told.” (The Ghost of Doctor Harris) American novelist and short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828; he later tried to suppress it, feeling it was not equal to the standard of his later work. He published several short stories in various periodicals, which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. Much of Hawthorne's writing centres on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered to be part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, Dark romanticism. His themes often centre on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. Table of Contents: Biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne Collections of Short Stories: Twice-Told Tales (1837) Grandfather's Chair (1840) Biographical Stories Mosses from an Old Manse (1846) Wonder Book For Girls and Boys (1851) The Snow Image and Other Twice Told Tales (1852) Tanglewood Tales For Girls and Boys (1853) The Dolliver Romance and Other Pieces, Tales and Sketches (1864) The Story Teller Sketches in Magazines
