Book excerpt: This pamphlet examines the conditions that put female Hispanic Americans at risk of not completing their education and not aspiring to careers, and describes a program that takes advantage of the important role played by the mother in Hispanic culture. The following factors make female Hispanic Americans the most at-risk of all students: (1) low grades and disciplinary problems; (2) lack of role models; (3) disproportionate levels of referrals to special education classes; (4) low teacher expectations; (5) lack of adequate vocational and career counseling; (6) stereotypical portrayals in the curriculum; (7) weak educational support at home; and (8) mothers with low educational attainment and low educational expectations for their daughters. The Mother-Daughter Program is a collaborative program involving the University of Texas, the YWCA, and three El Paso (Texas) school districts. The program targets Hispanic American female students in grade 6 and their mothers from low-income families in which no member has graduated from college. Mothers are a central focus of the program, because their expectations, involvement, and role-modeling have a lasting impact on their daughters' educational development. Participants engage in a variety of activities on local college campuses and in community service programs. Hispanic American college women who serve as role models are a vital component of the program. Mothers and daughters participating in the program report increased career awareness, self-confidence, and educational aspirations. A list of 20 references is appended. (FMW)

Book excerpt: While a university education is sold to students as something anyone can achieve, their particular social location influences who enters this space. Mexican American women, by virtue of their intersecting identities as racialized women in the US, have to adopt a particular identity if they are to succeed through the educational pipeline and into college. In this thesis, I explore the mechanics behind the construction of this identity at The University of Texas at Austin. To understand how this happens, I read the experiences of six Mexican American, female students through a Chicana feminist lens, particularly Anzaldúa's mestiza consciousness. I discovered that if Mexicana/Chicana students are to "make it," they have to adopt a "good student, nice Mexican woman" identity. In other words, to be considered good students, Mexican American women must also adopt a code of conduct that is acceptable to the white-centric and middle-class norms that dominate education, both at a K-12 level and at the university level. This behavior is uniquely tied to the social construction of Mexican American women as a threat to the United States because of their alleged hypersexuality and hyperfertility. Their ability to reproduce, biologically and culturally, means that young Mexican women must be able to show to white epistemic authorities that they have their sexuality and gender performance "under control." However, even if they adopt this identity, their presence at the university is policed and regulated. As brown women, they are trespassers of a space that has historically been constructed as white and male. This results in students and faculty engaging in microaggressions that serve to Other the Mexican American women and erect new symbolic boundaries that maintain a racial and gender hierarchy in the university. While the students do not just accept these rules, adopting the identity of "good student, nice Mexican woman" limits how the students can defend themselves from microaggressions or challenge the racial and gender structure. Nevertheless, throughout this thesis I demonstrate that even within the constraints of the limited identity available to the students, they still resist dominant discourses and exercise agency to change their social situation.

Book excerpt: In 1998, a series of focus groups was held to explore the factors that promote resilience among Hispanic girls. At least 4 focus groups, composed of no less than 6 and no more than 15 participants, were conducted at each of the 6 urban sites. In spite of the variations in Hispanic subgroup membership of the focus group participants, the findings from these sessions suggested one clear, salient conclusion: cultural protective factors play a critical role in buffering Hispanic girls from risky and damaging behaviors, such as delinquency, depression, pregnancy, and substance abuse. This report also offers recommendations to address the serious risks facing Hispanic girls. Focus group participants confirmed the need to develop culturally appropriate programs and messages for Hispanic girls and their parents. They agreed about the importance of involving Hispanic community-based organizations in the design, implementation, and evaluation of any campaign to empower Hispanic girls. (Contains 131 end notes.)
