Book excerpt: Dale was seventeen when the Second World War had finally ended. After the end of the war, he eagerly set his sights on higher learning and began to pursue his own lofty personal goals, in a peacetime America. In 1950, after the Korean War erupted into the lives of the, still battle-weary people of the United States, young men were targeted, once again, by the United States Military. Dale had just turned twenty-two years old. Much attention has been given, of late, to letters written by the men who served in the Armed Forces, of the United States, this past century. I believe that in my letters, written by a raw young sailor, Krug to Princess, one might be able to gain much insight, on what many of the young men, like Dale, went through in those uncertain times. Dale labored to write Connie a daily letter. Depending on circumstances, he sometimes could only write every two or three days, but most of the time he maintained his daily schedule, of notes and letters. Some of Krugs letters, from the war zone, were lost before they reached me, but because of the frequency of his writing, most came through to me. So, even though a few letters were lost, I still have a steady diary, of Krugs day-to-day activities in his first year of life in the Navy, at the beginning of the Korean War. Dale dedicated himself to motivate me to, want to, wait for him to come home to our marriage, by keeping my interest in him, alive. He worked hard, to make his beautiful love notes, both interesting and informative in reading content.

Book Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin in Germany

Download or read book Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin in Germany written by Gerda Panofsky-Soergel and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of four studies on the famous Russian writer and historian, who lived from 1766-1826, and his connections with Germany. In 1789 Karamzin did not only visit various German towns and monuments, but also interview philosophers and men of letters like Kant, Nicolai, Herder or Wieland. The episodes from his LETTERS OF A RUSSIAN TRAVELER have been widely dismissed as fictional. However, as this author can show, archival records and even contemporary newspapers prove that Karamzin did not invent anything. On the contrary his epistles turn out to be an invaluable source of knowledge, for instance on the conditions of Russians, temporarily or permanently living at the time in Prussia, in particular Berlin and Potsdam. By a strange twist of history, several of Karamzin's autographs have found their way back to Germany, above all to the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, the very library the young Karamzin had borrowed a volume from more than two centuries before. These papers (aside from an earlier autograph of 1789 in Nurnberg) range from 1806 till 1821 and are commented upon in the last part of the present publication.

Book Truth Claims Across Media

Download or read book Truth Claims Across Media written by Beate Schirrmacher and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an intermedial approach to truthful communication. Bringing together a wide range of media types and interactions from a transmedial perspective, the volume maps out how truth claims are made in different contexts, and how different media promise to create a truthful perception of the social world. The flexible communicative possibilities of digital technology have a significant impact on our perception of truth and truthfulness of communication. Bot accounts, deep fake videos, or AI technology draw attention to how reliable communication is destabilized and questioned. In this unstable climate, binaries such as true/false, authentic/fake and fiction/facts are difficult to apply. Instead, it is crucial to investigate how media products construct truthfulness in different ways. The volume brings together various media types and contexts such as press conferences, documentaries and mockumentaries, images in magazines and on social media, horror movies, biopics, and educational games and explores how truth claims, authenticity discourses, and knowledge communication are established and how they collide, merge, or are confused. This is an open access book.
