Book excerpt: Harry Cardwell, 21 year-old shepherd from the border hills, is already one of the 'veterans' of the Somme battlefield. Returning from leave Harry confronts a burly Sergeant auctioning off a tin of very intimate love-letters and photographs found in a shelled dug-out. Trying to protect the privacy of those letters, Harry buys them himself. A simple act of decency that is to have a lifetime of consequence. Annie is the nurse in the photographs. A former volunteer from New England with her doctor husband on a Harvard Medical Unit, she has ended up a widow on an ambulance train serving the Western Front. We are two strangers who meet in hell, she writes to Harry when he finally tracks her down. We come from two different worlds and have no mutual friends. Why should we hide anything from one another? Love Of An Unknown Soldier is the first volume in the Harry and Annie Series. A Long Road Home, When War Came Again, First Snow of Winter and Last Snow of Winter are available as paperback or ebook.

Book Letter from an Unknown Woman

Download or read book Letter from an Unknown Woman written by James Naremore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Naremore's study of Max Ophuls' classic 1948 melodrama, Letter from an Unknown Woman, not only pays tribute to Ophuls but also discusses the backgrounds and typical styles of the film's many contributors--among them Viennese author Stephan Zweig, whose 1922 novella was the source of the picture; producer John Houseman, an ally of Ophuls who nevertheless made questionable changes to what Ophuls had shot; screenwriter Howard Koch; music composer Daniéle Amfitheatrof; designers Alexander Golitzen and Travis Banton; and leading actors Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan, whose performances were central to the film's emotional effect. Naremore also traces the film's reception history, from its middling box office success and mixed early reviews, exploring why it has been a work of exceptional interest to subsequent generations of both aesthetic critics and feminist theorists. Lastly, Naremore provides an in-depth critical appreciation of the film, offering nuanced appreciation of specific details of mise-en-scene, camera movement, design, sound, and performances, integrating this close analyses into an overarching analysis of Letter's “recognition plot;” a trope in which the recognition of a character's identity creates dramatic intensity or crisis. Naremore argues that Letter's use of recognition is one of the most powerful in Hollywood cinema, and contrasts it with what we find in Zweig's novella.

Book Letter from an Unknown Woman and Other Stories

Download or read book Letter from an Unknown Woman and Other Stories written by Stefan Zweig and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These four Stefan Zweig stories, newly translated by the award-winning Anthea Bell, are among his most celebrated and compelling work. The titular tale is a devastating depiction of unrequited love, which inspired a classic Hollywood film, directed by Max Ophüls and starring Joane Fontaine. Elsewhere in the collection, a young man mistakes the girl he loves for her sister, two erstwhile lovers meet after an age spent apart, and a married woman repays a debt of gratitude to her childhood sweetheart. Expertly paced, laced with the acutely accurate psychological detail and empathy that are Zweig's trademarks, this is a powerful addition to Pushkin's growing collection of his work.

Book excerpt: "The book is written in an engaging and accessible style and the passion of the author is evident. ...an interesting and timely text that will be useful to those working with very young children and their families." British Journal of Educational Studies "a challenging and worthwhile read" Nursery World The first year of life is the year of opportunity. It is when the foundations for our emotional and social well being together with our motivation and ability to learn begin to be laid down by an ongoing interplay of physical, neurological and psychological processes Maria Robinson draws upon up to date research to illuminate this process and highlights the importance of understanding the meaning and influence of adult interactions, reactions and behaviour towards their child and the child's impact on the adult. She indicates how the outcomes of early experience can influence the direction of future development so providing insight into the potential reasons for children's behavioural responses. The powerful nature of working with babies and young children is addressed in a separate section which encourages practitioners to reflect on how personal attitudes, beliefs and values can influence professional practice. This fascinating book is a valuable resource for all early years practitioners including teachers, social workers and health visitors who wish to understand behaviour within a context of early developmental processes.

Book Divine Science and the Science of God

Download or read book Divine Science and the Science of God written by Victor Preller and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Victor Preller examines the logical status of religious language in the light of recent developments in American analytic philosophy. The problem inherent in religious language is presented in terms of the referential status of the word God. The author argues that the significance of any referential term is dependent upon the ability of that term to play a significant role 'within' a unified conceptual system. The problem is shown to transcend the epistemological dogmas of Positivism and Conceptual Empiricism and to be inherent in any intelligible epistemology, including that of Thomas Aquinas, whose theological treatises serve as a model of religious language for the thesis of this book. According to Professor Preller, Divine Science (Aquinas' term for what we now call Natural Theology) results from a reflection upon the limitations encountered by the intellect in its attempt to render intelligible the objects of human experience. In the Science of God (Aquinas' term for that mode of knowing engendered by faith), the unknown meta-empirical referent of Divine Science becomes the object of the human intellect. While this study develops out of the discussions inaugurated by Flew and McIntyre in 'New Essays in Philosophical Theology', it rejects the excessively empirical approach of most other studies in that tradition. It applies post-positivistic analysis to specifically Catholic theological language, but it obviously applies to the theological language involved in any form of theism.

Book New Trends in Software Methodologies Tools and Techniques

Download or read book New Trends in Software Methodologies Tools and Techniques written by H. Fujita and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software is the essential enabler for the new economy and science. It creates new markets and new directions for a more reliable, flexible, and robust society. It empowers the exploration of our world in ever more depth. However, software often falls short behind our expectations. Current software methodologies, tools, and techniques remain expensive and not yet reliable for a highly changeable and evolutionary market. Many approaches have been proven only as case-by-case oriented methods. This book presents a number of new trends and theories in the direction in which we believe software science and engineering may develop to transform the role of software and science in tomorrow’s information society. This publication is an attempt to capture the essence of a new state of art in software science and its supporting technology. Is also aims at identifying the challenges such a technology has to master.
