Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Leithart's typological reading of the unified book of 1 and 2 Samuel unleashes the literary power of this key Old Testament narrative. By giving careful attention to the book's literary structures and its patterns of types and antitypes, the symbolic world of Samuel reveals a cumulative and cohesive story. Leithart's reading of Samuel enhances our understanding of New Testament Christology and gives us a framework for applying the Old Testament to our own lives, as the book comes alive as a tragic and beautiful story of the rebirth of Israel in difficult times.

Book Letters to the Sons of Society

Download or read book Letters to the Sons of Society written by Shaka Senghor and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Writing My Wrongs invites men everywhere on a journey of honesty and healing through this book of moving letters to his sons—one whom he is raising and the other whose childhood took place during Senghor's nineteen-year incarceration. “A visceral and visual journey for the ages . . . the perfect road map for us to remove the barriers and obstacles against our true feelings.”—Kenya Barris, creator of black-ish ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Essence Shaka Senghor has lived the life of two fathers. With his first son, Jay, born shortly after Senghor was incarcerated for second-degree murder, he experienced the regret of his own mistakes and the disconnection caused by a society that sees Black lives as disposable. With his second, Sekou, born after Senghor's release, he has experienced healing, transformation, intimacy, and the possibilities of a world where men and boys can openly show one another affection, support, and love. In this collection of beautifully written letters to Jay and Sekou, Senghor traces his journey as a Black man in America and unpacks the toxic and misguided messages about masculinity, mental health, love, and success that boys learn from an early age. He issues a passionate call to all fathers and sons—fathers who don't know how to show their sons love, sons who are navigating a fatherless world, boys who have been forced to grow up before their time—to cultivate positive relationships with other men, seek healing, tend to mental health, grow from pain, and rewrite the story that has been told about them. Letters to the Sons of Society is a soulful examination of the bond between father and sons, and a touchstone for anyone seeking a kinder, more just world.

Book excerpt: One of the things I most enjoy doing is going to estate sales. Call it the excitement of the huntthe prospects of finding a book by an author I had not known before, an artifact from some exotic culture, or even some dishes with a pattern I remembered from childhood. There is always the mystique of trying to reconstruct the life of someone who has diedseeing the things they valued spread out, to be snatched up by anyone willing to pay the asking price, much as my things will be dispersed when I am gone. There is always the prospect of finding something totally unexpected. Thus, it was some months ago when I came across a box of envelopes all marked First Day of Issue. The United States Postal Service designates a city on the first day a given stamp is issued, and all letters mailed from that city on that day can be cancelled with that marking. Frequently, dealers get bundles of such cancelled envelopes and sell them to collectors for a good price. Here was a boxful of these envelopes. I offered the sellers a price for the whole box. It was near the end of the sale. The sellers wanted to get rid of as much as possible, and they accepted my offer. I should add that I am not a stamp collector. I do have friends who collect stamps and thought this would make a nice gift for one of them. When I got home, I arranged the collection chronologically. They spanned a period of twelve years, from 1959 to 1971. They were all addressed to the same person in Birmingham, Alabama, a Samuel . They were all written by the same person, a Dwayne , who was born and raised in Birmingham. My curiosity was piqued. Who was this son of Birmingham who absented himself from his native town during one of the most turbulent periods of its history? What was the relationship of the two men that warranted such a long and voluminous correspondencefor me, a one-way correspondence, since I had no way of retrieving the letters Samuel sent to Dwayne. Why the long period of exile during that particular period of time? Why the widespread traveling? How did Dwayne manage to support himself? What did he do to occupy his time? My mind was filled with questions. When I started reading the letters, the answers I received were far more intriguing than I could have imagined. It is with this in mind that I offer this correspondence to the reading public. It reflects the psychological history not only of an unusual personality but also of an important era of American history. I have let the letters stand as they were written, preserving the style, grammar, and orthography of the author. I know little enough of the details of his childhood. He was obviously well read, even if he was not formally educated to any advanced degree. He was clearly an astute observer of the events of his time. It is my hope that the reader will find the letters edifying and entertaininguseful and pleasingand that my effort to bring them to public view will be deemed worthwhile.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times Bestseller: “A hilarious take on that age-old problem: getting the beloved child to go to sleep” (NPR). “Hell no, you can’t go to the bathroom. You know where you can go? The f**k to sleep.” Go the Fuck to Sleep is a book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland. Profane, affectionate, and radically honest, it captures the familiar—and unspoken—tribulations of putting your little angel down for the night. Read by a host of celebrities, from Samuel L. Jackson to Jennifer Garner, this subversively funny bestselling storybook will not actually put your kids to sleep, but it will leave you laughing so hard you won’t care.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: imploring the birth of a male child, to be dedicated to the Lord for ever. With how much more force, with how much more lively devotion, do the words spring into utterance when the language comes from the heart. So with Hannah; her heart was full, and she felt a relief from her weight of woes, a burthen removed from her breast, when she poured out her whole soul before her God. Thus, my dear children, whenever you are labouring under any severe affliction, whenever you have suffered either from your own follies, or the machinations of a wicked world, in the time of your trouble turn to the Lord, and, with prayer and supplication, pour out your whole soul before Him, implore His aid, and He will be your comforter. How little did Hannah know the blessing the Almighty had in store for her, and that the want of that one blessing for which she so devoutly prayed was only held in abeyance, as a trial of her fortitude, and an increase to her happiness so long delayed. Emily.?Before you proceed, dear Grandpapa, pray explain to us what Hannah meant when, in praying for a child, she said that no razor should eome upon his head. Grandpapa.?A very natural enquiry, my dear: not suffering a razor to come over his head, according to the Jewish law, signified that, from his childhood, he was dedicated to the service of the Lord. They were also called Nazarites, a designation derived from the Hebrew word nazir, to separate; intended to signify a particular sort of separation from the world, and devotedness to God. There were, originally, two sorts of Nazarites, such as were devoted to God by their parents from infancy, or even before they were born; and others who, in after years, devoted themselves. Sampson, Samuel, and John the Baptist, were among the former, and our Saviour...
