Book excerpt: This Australian story exhibits all the colour and harshness of life in post-war inner Sydney. With alcohol abuse adding to the austerity of the boys' early lives, there is a rapid progression into crime and the welfare system. Intrigue and conspiracy in the seminary, and the failure of the Roman Catholic Church to ensure the safety of the boys in care provides the background. Problems are exacerbated by the laxity of the celibate hierarchy - and a cover-up. The hunt for the killer and the unusual ending makes for an intriguing plot. A carefully balanced international theme, with much left to the reader's imagination.'A marvellously well-plotted, topical novel - a cracker of a tale, engrossing and ... a sensitive treatment of the subject of paedophilia - and murder.' Tom Flood, Miles Franklin award winning author, editor and assessor

Book To Kill a Priest

Download or read book To Kill a Priest written by Kevin Ruane and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Kill a Priest captures the wide ramifications of the story of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a popular young parish priest in a Warsaw suburb who steadfastly spoke out from his pulpit against the abuses of communism and supported the then-banned Solidarity trade union. Abducted by the Polish secret police on 19th October 1984, his savagely beaten body was found 11 days later in an icy reservoir.Kevin Ruane documents how, for the first time, a communist government was forced to try and condemn the repressive actions of its own security agents and admit its own wrong-doing. It proved to be the decisive crack in the fortress of Eastern Block Communism, forcing it - for the first time within its own boundaries - to share power with a non-Communist organisation: the Solidarity trade union.

Book From Priest s Whore to Pastor s Wife

Download or read book From Priest s Whore to Pastor s Wife written by Dr Marjorie Elizabeth Plummer and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 13 June 1525, Martin Luther married Katharina von Bora, a former nun, in a private ceremony officiated by city preacher Johann Bugenhagen. Whilst Luther was not the first former monk or Reformer to marry, his marriage immediately became one of the iconic episodes of the Protestant Reformation. From that point on, the marital status of clergy would be a pivotal dividing line between the Catholic and Protestant churches. Tackling the early stages of this divide, this book provides a fresh assessment of clerical marriage in the first half of the sixteenth century, when the debates were undecided and the intellectual and institutional situation remained fluid and changeable. It investigates the way that clerical marriage was received, and viewed in the dioceses of Mainz and Magdeburg under Archbishop Albrecht of Brandenburg from 1513 to 1545. By concentrating on a cross-section of rural and urban settings from three key regions within this territory - Saxony, Franconia, and Swabia - the study is able to present a broad comparison of reactions to this contentious issue. Although the marital status of the clergy remains perhaps the most identifiable difference between Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, remarkably little research has been done on how the shift from a "celibate" to a married clergy took place during the Reformation in Germany or what reactions such a move elicited. As such, this book will be welcomed by all those wishing to gain greater insight, not only into the theological debates, but also into the interactions between social identity, governance, and religious practice.

Book How to Kill a Priest

Download or read book How to Kill a Priest written by Blasphemous and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways to kill a priest: hire a Viking to split him with an axe, persuade a mob boss to shoot him with a gun, send a pretty woman to poison him. However, none of that is legal. And not only that, if anyone connects you with your hitman, you will end up in prison, where every second seems like an eternity. But there is a more efficient way, and it is in complete accordance with the law - keep asking him the right questions until he gets a heart attack. You can do it in the church while he is preaching, and nobody shall be able to dispute you. I silenced many priests for good and wrote this manual for everyone who wants to do the same.

Book Priest Indian Conflict in Upper Peru

Download or read book Priest Indian Conflict in Upper Peru written by Nicholas A. Robins and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed volume offers an unprecedented exploration of incendiary conditions that stoked The Great Rebellion of 1780-1782 in Upper Peru (Bolivia). That revolt claimed tens of thousands of lives and traumatized imperial psyches for decades to come. It was, in effect, one of the most de vastating political and human disasters in Latin American colonial history. Using extensive archival research, Nicholas Robins delves into the fractious relations between Indian communities and their clergy and the role that such tensions played as a major causal factor of the rebellion. Among the grievous economic and social issues were the use of forced Indian labor, land encroachment, colonial relations with native leaders, and collection of Indian tithes and first fruits. Powerful case histories offer rare insights into the daily exercise of power in colonial Andean villages. Compelling archival evidence provides a riveting portrait of clerical abuse in rural villages and reveals how Indian peoples challenged and resisted ruling powers with varying degrees of success. Robins’ substantial documentation is enriched by a wealth of often colorful detail, making it an excellent choice for studies in Colonial Latin America n history and indigenous Latin American communities.
