Book excerpt: "Fromm's haunting tale of adults testing the bonds of youthful friendships is full of hard-won wit and unexpected humor." --Jim Ruland, author of Forest of Fortune It's been 100 years since tragedy struck the rolling woods around Fleur-de-Lys, one of dozens of Gilded Age estates dotting the western Massachusetts town of Gable. In Gable, they both begrudge and venerate their past, and even now that health spas and corporate yoga retreats have replaced the mansions of a bygone era, the ghosts of yesteryear linger. Growing up there means navigating those ghosts, and the even more pernicious pitfalls of adolescence, until you're lucky enough to find your footing. Unless you're not. In The Duration, Boston attorney Pete Johansson finds himself reuniting in Gable with his troubled childhood pal Chickie, who has returned to the wintry town of their youth determined to solve past mysteries and right the wrongs he can't seem to shake. Despite--or because of--his best intentions, Pete is drawn reluctantly into Chick's reckless orbit, straining a bedrock friendship and putting them both at risk.

Book Diagnostic Studies in Arithmetic

Download or read book Diagnostic Studies in Arithmetic written by Guy Thomas Buswell and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failures in the elementary school are caused more frequently by arithmetic than by any other subject in the curriculum. These failures can be traced to three factors: (1) materials (textbooks, practice exercises, special devices); (2) the teacher's methods of instruction or manner of presentation; (3) the methods and mental processes of the pupils. This monograph reports a study of the third factor and presents a detailed analysis of one group of mental processes--those exhibited in dealing with the four fundamental operations in arithmetic.

Book Duration and Simultaneity

Download or read book Duration and Simultaneity written by Henri Bergson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This philosophical text deals with the theme of time. A central contention is that science and philosophy alike systematically misrepresent the nature of time. Bergson suggests that the traditional association between the model of space and time is incoherent. Unlike space, time is not measurable by objective standard. This contention is tried out against the major movement in physics of the day - relativity. Tracing the development of the theory from special to general relativity, Bergson finds that a fundamental requirement of the theory is an impossibility - the assumption that the experiences of two observers moving at different speeds within two different physical systems might be thought of as simultaneous. This is to ignore the limits of possible experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An hour, once it lodges in the queer element of the human spirit, may be stretched to fifty or a hundred times its clock length; on the other hand, an hour may be accurately represented on the timepiece of the mind by one second.” —Virginia Woolf, Orlando: A Biography, 1928 About Time: Fashion and Duration traces the evolution of fashion, from 1870 to the present, through a linear timeline of iconic garments, each paired with an alternate design that jumps forward or backward in time. These unexpected pairings, which relate to one another through shape, motif, material, pattern, technique, or decoration, create a unique and disruptive fashion chronology that conflates notions of past, present, and future. Virginia Woolf serves as “ghost narrator”: excerpts from her novels reflect on the passage of time with each subsequent plate pairing. A new short story by Michael Cunningham, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Hours, recounts a day in the life of a woman over a time span of 150 years through her changing fashions. Scholar Theodore Martin analyzes theoretical responses to the nature of time, underscoring that time is not simply a sequence of historical events. And fashion photographer Nicholas Alan Cope illustrates 120 fashions with sublime black and-white photography. This stunning book reveals fashion’s paradoxical connection to linear notions of time.
