Book The People s Advocate

Download or read book The People s Advocate written by Daniel Sheehan and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Advocate is the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan. Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working–class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, D.C.–based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer. In The People's Advocate, Sheehan details "the inside story" of over a dozen historically significant American legal cases of the 20th Century, all of which he litigated. The remarkable cases covered in the book include both The Pentagon Papers Case in 1971 and The Watergate Burglary Case in 1973. In addition, Sheehan served as the Chief Attorney on The Karen Silkwood Case in 1976, which additionally revealed the C.I.A.'s Israeli Desk had been smuggling 98% bomb–grade plutonium to the State of Israel and to Iran. In 1984, he was the Chief Trial Counsel on The American Sanctuary Movement Case, establishing the right of American church workers to provide assistance to Central American political refugees fleeing Guatemalan and Salvadorian "death squads." His involvement with the sanctuary movement ultimately led to Sheehan's famous Iran/Contra Federal Civil Racketeering Case against the Reagan/Bush Administration, which he investigated, initiated, filed, and then litigated. The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment over a dozen of the top–ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration. The People's Advocate is the "real story" of these and many other historic American cases, told from the unique point of view of a central lawyer.

Book The International Ombudsman Yearbook

Download or read book The International Ombudsman Yearbook written by International Ombudsman Institute and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The International Ombudsman Yearbook" is the only publication devoted to ombudsman issues. The public sector ombudsman is now found at all levels of government in many countries around the world, both in established and consolidating democracies. The ombudsman is an independent office, traditionally appointed by the legislative branch, to investigate poor administration of government. More recently, some ombudsman offices have been given human rights protection responsibilities. "The International Ombudsman Yearbook" contains articles written from legal or public administration perspectives which address issues of interest to the contemporary ombudsman and all persons with an interest in the institution. Compiled and edited by the International Ombudsman Institute, the organisation composed of over 130 ombudsman members located worldwide, the "Yearbook" will be of interest to lawyers, scholars, ombudsman office personnel, and government entities wherever ombudsman offices are located or contemplated. The International Ombudsman Institute is a non-profit organisation whose objects include promotion of the concept of ombudsmanship, encouragement and support of research in the ombudsman field, development of educational programmes associated with ombudsmanship conferences, and provision of a resource centre for storage and dissemination of information about the ombudsman institution.

Book Administrative Law in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Administrative Law in Central and Eastern Europe written by Denis J. Galligan and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the constitutional and political reforms in Central and Eastern Europe of the last decade, the time has now come for the whole-scale reform of public administration and the creation of a professional civil service. What is needed is a clear sense of the objectives to be achieved by the administration; and the provision of adequate resources to perform the tasks of public administration. In addition, and perhaps most importantly of all, there must be a sound legal basis for public administration. Recognizing these realities, this book examines administrative law and administrative institutions in Central and Eastern Europe. In a series of case studies, discussing each country in the region in turn, it looks at the ways in which a range of administrative decisions are reached and at how the citizens affected by them are treated. The material for each of the fourteen chapters was collected by a person or persons native to the respective country.

Book Always an Advocate

Download or read book Always an Advocate written by Angela Muir van Etten and published by Angela Muir Van Etten. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're skeptical about changing society's discriminatory treatment of people with dwarfism and other disabilities, Van Etten offers hope with these words: "Advocacy makes change possible when people call out what is wrong, care enough to stand up for what is right, commit to the cause for as long as it takes, and have confidence in God's power to change hearts." Van Etten repeatedly demonstrates the power of advocacy in this book. Titans of industry are now required to lower ATMs, gas pumps, and elevator buttons to be within reach of people previously ignored. Public transportation must be accessible. Cheering crowds applauding dwarf tossing contests are silenced. Many homeowners, school children, and volunteer leaders enjoy equal access, respect, and civility. Read this book and be inspired to advocate for the changes you-and others-need. It can be done. "This is a terrific book. When a righteous voice needs to be amplified, Angela rose to the challenge time and time again. Her seemingly endless supply of energy comes from her faith in God and her love of the underdog." ~ Bill Klein, Co-author of Life is Short and Co-Star of TLC's Little Couple." Be inspired and encouraged by Angela's determination to take on all challenges, and eventually overcome and master them with an ample dose of faith and humor." ~ Genevieve Cousminer, Esq., former Director of the Coalition for Independent Living Options, Inc." You will learn a lot about the challenges that dwarfs face in their everyday lives - and about the life and activism of this remarkable woman." ~ Dan Kennedy, Author of Little People: Learning to See the World Through My Daughter's Eyes." Angela Van Etten contributed in countless ways to the advancement of the dwarfism community, the disability community, and the broader community." ~ Gary Arnold, Little People of America Past President. "This book offers the reader a grand tour of local, state, and federal opportunities for advocacy. The only requirement is passion, dedication, a thick skin, patience, and a sense of humor." ~ Jim Kay, LPA Historian

Book The Collected Essays of Josephine J Turpin Washington

Download or read book The Collected Essays of Josephine J Turpin Washington written by Josephine Turpin Washington and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newspaper journalist, teacher, and social reformer, Josephine J. Turpin Washington led a life of intense engagement with the issues facing African American society in the post-Reconstruction era. This volume recovers numerous essays, many of them unavailable to the general public until now, and reveals the major contributions to the emerging black press made by this Virginia-born, Howard University-educated woman who clerked for Frederick Douglass and went on to become a writer with an important and unique voice. Written between 1880 and 1918, the work collected here is significant in the ways it disrupts the nineteenth-century African American literary canon, which has traditionally prioritized slave narratives. It paves the way for the treatment of race and gender in later nineteenth-century African American novels, and engages Biblical scriptures and European and American literatures to support racial uplift ideology. It also articulates shrewdly the aesthetic needs and responsibilities necessary for the black press to establish a reputable literary sphere. Part of a vibrant movement in recent scholarship to reclaim writings of nineteenth-century African American women writers, this expertly edited and annotated collection represents not only a valuable scholarly resource but a powerful example of the determination of a southern black woman to inspire others to improve their own lives and those of all African Americans.

Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly called Heather Hansen’s first book, The Elegant Warrior, a “template for achieving personal and career goals.” In Advocate to Win, Heather goes deeper. As an award-winning trial attorney, Heather quickly realized that she didn’t win because she was an extraordinary advocate. She won because she gave her clients the tools to advocate for themselves. First, they needed to choose what they wanted. Next, they needed to believe in themselves and their ability to get it. And then, they could advocate to win. Heather created a system to help her clients make the best choices for themselves, for the case, and for their wins. She gave them the tools to believe. And then she gave them specific strategies to advocate for what they wanted and to win with ease. Now, she will do the same for you.

Book Asian Socialism Legal Change

Download or read book Asian Socialism Legal Change written by John Gillespie and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immense process of economic and social transformation currently underway in China and Vietnam is well known and extensively documented. However, less attention has been devoted to the process of Chinese and Vietnamese legal change which is nonetheless critical for the future politics, society and economy of these two countries. In a unique comparative approach that brings together indigenous and international experts, Asian Socialism and Legal Change analyzes recent developments in the legal sphere in China and Vietnam. This book presents the diversity and dynamism of this process in China and Vietnam-the impact of socialism, constitutionalism and Confucianism on legal development; responses to change among enterprises and educational and legal institutions; conflicts between change led centrally and locally; and international influences on domestic legal institutions. Core socialist ideas continue to shape society, but have been adapted to local contexts and needs, in some areas more radically than in others. This book is the first systematic analysis of legal change in transitional economies.
