Book Opportunities to Promote Children s Behavioral Health

Download or read book Opportunities to Promote Children s Behavioral Health written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which was signed into law in 2010, has several provisions that could greatly improve the behavioral health of children and adolescents in the United States. It requires that many insurance plans cover mental health and substance use disorder services, rehabilitative services to help support people with behavioral health challenges, and preventive services like behavioral assessments for children and depression screening for adults. These and other provisions provide an opportunity to confront the many behavioral health challenges facing youth in America. To explore how the ACA and other aspects of health care reform can support innovations to improve children's behavioral health and sustain those innovations over time, the Forum on Promoting Children's Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health held a workshop on April 1-2, 2015. The workshop explicitly addressed the behavioral health needs of all children, including those with special health needs. It also took a two-generation approach, looking at the programs and services that support not only children but also parents and families. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions of this workshop.

Book Opportunities to promote the climate change resilience of Saint Lucia s pelagic fisheries and value chains through sustainable and efficient resource use

Download or read book Opportunities to promote the climate change resilience of Saint Lucia s pelagic fisheries and value chains through sustainable and efficient resource use written by Bealey, R. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Lucia is a Small Island Developing State in the Caribbean. Increasingly prevalent and intense hurricanes have provided tangible evidence of Caribbean fisheries exposure to environmental shocks in recent years. However, slower climate-change-related processes also require due attention. Promoting the efficiency of fisheries operations and their associated value chains can improve their climate change resilience while reducing stakeholders’ future socio-economic costs. Reducing operating and transaction costs promotes profitability and socio-economic resilience. Climate change resilience of fisheries duly considers the critical environmental efficiency related to capturing target species through methods that minimize unwanted effects upon bycatch species and the broader ecosystem. This publication proposes nationally tailored efficiency and climate-resilience-promoting interventions.

Book excerpt: This book contains refereed and improved papers presented at the Seventh IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC2007), held in Curitiba, Brazil, September 20-21, 2007. The GREC workshops provide an excellent opportunity for researchers and practitioners at all levels of experience to meet colleagues and to share new ideas and knowledge about graphics recognition methods. Graphics recognition is a subfield of document image analysis that deals with graphical entities in engineering drawings, sketches, maps, architectural plans, musical scores, mathematical notation, tables, diagrams, etc. GREC2007 continued the tradition of past workshops held at Penn State University, USA (GREC 1995, LNCS Volume 1072, Springer, 1996); Nancy, France (GREC 1997, LNCS Volume 1389, Springer, 1998); Jaipur, India (GREC 1999, LNCS Volume 1941, Springer, 2000); Kingston, Canada (GREC 2001, LNCS Volume 2390, Springer, 2002); Barcelona, Spain (GREC 2003, LNCS Volume 3088, Springer, 2004); and Hong Kong, China (GREC 2005, LNCS Volume 3926, Springer, 2006). GREC2007 was also the first edition of a GREC workshop held at the same location of the ICDAR conference and it facilitated people to attend to both events. The program of GREC2007 was organized in a single-track 2-day workshop. It comprised several sessions dedicated to specific topics.

Book The Matthew Effect

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Rigney
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0231149484
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book The Matthew Effect written by Daniel Rigney and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old saying does often seem to hold true: the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, creating a widening gap between those who have more and those who have less. The sociologist Robert K. Merton called this phenomenon the Matthew effect, named after a passage in the gospel of Matthew. Yet the more closely we examine the sociological effects of this principle, the more complicated the idea becomes. Initial advantage doesn't always lead to further advantage, and disadvantage doesn't necessarily translate into failure. Does this theory need to be revisited? Merton's arguments have significant implications for our conceptions of equality and justice, and they challenge our beliefs about culture, education, and public policy. His hypothesis has been examined across a variety of social arenas, including science, technology, politics, and schooling, to see if, in fact, advantage begets further advantage. Daniel Rigney is the first to evaluate Merton's theory of cumulative advantage extensively, considering both the conditions that uphold the Matthew effect and the circumstances that cause it to fail. He explores whether growing inequality is beyond human control or disparity is socially constructed and subject to change. Reexamining our core assumptions about society, Rigney causes us to rethink the sources of inequity.
