Book Advances in Automatic Text Summarization

Download or read book Advances in Automatic Text Summarization written by Inderjeet Mani and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ntil now there has been no state-of-the-art collection of themost important writings in automatic text summarization. This bookpresents the key developments in the field in an integrated frameworkand suggests future research areas. With the rapid growth of the World Wide Web and electronic information services, information is becoming available on-line at an incredible rate. One result is the oft-decried information overload. No one has time to read everything, yet we often have to make critical decisions based on what we are able to assimilate. The technology of automatic text summarization is becoming indispensable for dealing with this problem. Text summarization is the process of distilling the most important information from a source to produce an abridged version for a particular user or task. Until now there has been no state-of-the-art collection of the most important writings in automatic text summarization. This book presents the key developments in the field in an integrated framework and suggests future research areas. The book is organized into six sections: Classical Approaches, Corpus-Based Approaches, Exploiting Discourse Structure, Knowledge-Rich Approaches, Evaluation Methods, and New Summarization Problem Areas. Book Intelligence and Security Informatics

Download or read book Intelligence and Security Informatics written by Hsinchun Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, academics have been called on for possible contributions to research relating to national (and possibly internat- nal) security. As one of the original founding mandates of the National Science Foundation, mid- to long-term national security research in the areas of inf- mation technologies, organizational studies, and security-related public policy is critically needed. In a way similar to how medical and biological research has faced signi?cant information overload and yet also tremendous opportunities for new inno- tion, law enforcement, criminal analysis, and intelligence communities are facing the same challenge. We believe, similar to “medical informatics” and “bioinf- matics,” that there is a pressing need to develop the science of “intelligence and security informatics” – the study of the use and development of advanced information technologies, systems, algorithms and databases for national se- rity related applications, through an integrated technological, organizational, and policy-based approach. We believe active “intelligence and security informatics” research will help improve knowledge discovery and dissemination and enhance information s- ring and collaboration across law enforcement communities and among aca- mics, local, state, and federal agencies, and industry. Many existing computer and information science techniques need to be reexamined and adapted for - tional security applications. New insights from this unique domain could result in signi?cant breakthroughs in new data mining, visualization, knowledge - nagement, and information security techniques and systems.

Book Web Reasoning and Rule Systems

Download or read book Web Reasoning and Rule Systems written by Balder ten Cate and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Web Reasoning and Rule Systems, RR 2015, held in Berlin, Germany, in August 2015. The 5 full papers, 4 technical communications presented together with 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 16 submissions. The scale and the heterogenous nature of web data poses many challenges, and turns basic tasks such as query answering and data transformations into complex reasoning problems. Rule-based systems have found many applications in this area. The RR conference welcomes original research from all areas of Web Reasoning and Rule Systems. Topics of particular interest are: answer set programming, complex events, datalog, description logics, event-condition-action rules, information extraction, and logic programming.

Book Natural Language Information Retrieval

Download or read book Natural Language Information Retrieval written by T. Strzalkowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has been one of dramatic progress in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This hitherto largely academic discipline has found itself at the center of an information revolution ushered in by the Internet age, as demand for human-computer communication and informa tion access has exploded. Emerging applications in computer-assisted infor mation production and dissemination, automated understanding of news, understanding of spoken language, and processing of foreign languages have given impetus to research that resulted in a new generation of robust tools, systems, and commercial products. Well-positioned government research funding, particularly in the U. S. , has helped to advance the state-of-the art at an unprecedented pace, in no small measure thanks to the rigorous 1 evaluations. This volume focuses on the use of Natural Language Processing in In formation Retrieval (IR), an area of science and technology that deals with cataloging, categorization, classification, and search of large amounts of information, particularly in textual form. An outcome of an information retrieval process is usually a set of documents containing information on a given topic, and may consist of newspaper-like articles, memos, reports of any kind, entire books, as well as annotated image and sound files. Since we assume that the information is primarily encoded as text, IR is also a natural language processing problem: in order to decide if a document is relevant to a given information need, one needs to be able to understand its content.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Linguistics written by Keith Allan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this outstanding book leading scholars from around the world examine the history of linguistics from ancient origins to the present. They consider every aspect of the field from language origins to neurolinguistics, explore linguistic traditions in east and west, chronicle centuries of explanations for language structures, meanings, and usage, and look at how it has been practically applied. The book is organized in six parts. The first looks at the origins of language, the invention of writing, the nature of gesture, and sign languages. Part II examines the history of the analysis and description of sound systems. Part III considers the history of linguistics in China, Korea, Japan, India, and the Middle East, as well as the history of the study of Semitic and Afro-Asiatic. Part IV examines the history of grammar and morphology in the west from the classical world to the present. Part V surveys the history of lexicography semantics, pragmatics, and text and discourse studies. Part VI looks at the history the application of linguistics in fields that include the language classification; social and cultural theory; psychology and the brain sciences; education and translation; computational science; and the development of linguistic corpora. The book ends with a history of the philosophy of linguistics. The Oxford Handbook of the History of Linguistics makes a significant contribution to the historiography of linguistics. It will also be a valuable reference for scholars and students in linguists and related fields, including philosophy and cognitive science.
