Book Tintoretto

  • Pages : 410 pages

Book excerpt: Jacopo Tintoretto (1518–94) is an ambiguous figure in the history of art. His radically unorthodox paintings are not readily classifiable, and although he was a Venetian by birth, his standing as a member of the Venetian school is constantly contested. But he was also a formidable maverick, abandoning the humanist narratives and sensuous color palette typical of the great Venetian master, Titian, in favor of a renewed concentration on core Christian subjects painted in a rough and abbreviated chiaroscuro style. This generously illustrated book offers an extensive analysis of Tintoretto’s greatest paintings, charting his life and work in the context of Venetian art and the culture of the Cinquecento. Tom Nichols shows that Tintoretto was an extraordinarily innovative artist who created a new manner of painting, which, for all of its originality and sophistication, was still able to appeal to the shared emotions of the widest possible audience. This compact, pocket edition features sixteen additional illustrations and a new afterword by the author, and it will continue to be one of the definitive treatments of this once grossly overlooked master.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Abridgment in essay form of a much larger work at onetime contemplated and partially completed. This fact may account for what will be felt by the real student Of Tintoretto to be a somewhat uneven treat ment of the subject. The author takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks to all those who have so kindly assisted him, especially friends in Venice. TO Miss Holbom of Aberdeen Park his gratitude is particularly due, as without her aid the book would never have been written, and to her he would dedicate this small effort. Download or read book Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Classic Reprint written by Frank Preston Stearns and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti, Called Tintoretto The thirty-first of May was the three hundredth anniversary of Tintoretto's death, and as yet no adequate account of him has appeared in English, or, so far as I can discover, in any language. Much that is excellent has been written about him by Taine, Ruskin, and other critics, but no clear analysis of his genius, no thorough and systematic examination of his works, has yet been placed before the public. Mr. Osler's little book is good so far as it goes, but the evolution of Tintoretto as a painter is not in it. At the same time it contains many valuable suggestions, and no other writer has appreciated so well the moral equality of this master's painting. The Italian Life of Tintoretto by Ridolfi does not appear to have been translated into English. The friends who have assisted me in the present undertaking can testify to the thorough manner in which it has been performed. Every clew that might lead to fresh information has been followed out carefully, and all publications in French, German, and Italian which could throw light on the subject have been consulted. Brilliant in its interpretation of the 16th-century master's paintings, this monumental biography of Titian draws on contemporary accounts and recent art historical research and scholarship, some of it previously unpublished, providing an unparalleled portrait of the artist, as well as a fascinating rendering of Venice as a center of culture, commerce, and power. Sheila Hale's Titian is destined to be this century's authoritative text on the life of greatest painter of the Italian High Renaissance.
