She needs a permanent job—or a trustworthy husband—to help provide for her family. Reuben Shepard went home to his family in New York after the Civil War, to find his wife had declared him dead—so she could wed another. In shock, Reuben didn’t contest her claim and wandered south, spending years as a cattle drover on western trails until settling down to work on the Bar E Ranch. Spending time with Darcie’s toddler, Tate, makes Reuben miss his own son, Gabe. Reuben travels to New York, hoping to visit his son, and ends up bringing Gabe back to the Kansas because the boy’s step-father had just died. When Reuben proposes marriage to Darcie for their children’s sake, the couple falls in love as they learn to trust and support each other while planning for their future. But their wedding is stalled when Reuben’s former wife arrives, stating she and Reuben are still married. What’s the truth and what’s best for the children is their concern now instead of a wedding date. How can they clear their past, so they can have a future together? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of human services is filled with clinicians turned managers. Many of these managers have not studied business and lack leadership and management experience. Bringing Micro to the Macro: Adapting Clinical Interventions for Supervision and Management shows social workers and other human service professionals how to adapt their clinical and direct practice skills to be effective supervisors and managers. The book demonstrates the parallels between the micro process of client work and the macro process of staff supervision and management. It also shows managers how to properly adapt and employ their micro practice skills to engage, motivate, and guide their staff to achieve maximum impact and productivity. The first four parts are based on the four phases of service delivery in social work: Engagement, Assessment, Intervention, and Evaluation and Termination. The book concludes with a part on Self-Care, as this is important if you want to have longevity in this field. Bringing Micro to the Macro is a user-friendly book that can be a tool that new supervisors or managers in social work and human services can reach for when they wonder how to work with staff instead of clients.

Book Work and Labor in American Popular Culture

Download or read book Work and Labor in American Popular Culture written by Jason Russell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crisis and decline in the working class were frequent themes in American popular culture during the 1970s. In contrast, more positive narratives about America’s managerial and professional class appeared during the 1980s. Focusing on these two key decades, this book explores how portrayals of social class and associated work and labor issues including gender and race appeared in specific films, television shows, and music. Comparing and contrasting how forms of popular media portrayed both unionized and non-unionized workers, the book discusses how workers’ perceptions of themselves were in turn shaped by messages conveyed through media. The book opens with an introduction which outlines the historical context of the immediate post-war period and the heightened social, political, and economic tension of the Cold War era. Three substantial chapters then explore film, television, and music in turn, looking at key works including Star Wars, Coming Home, 9 to 5, Good Times, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and the music of Bruce Springsteen and rap artists. Drawing on both primary and secondary sources, the book is principally situated within wider labor and working-class history research, and the relatively new history of capitalism historical sub-field. This book is vital reading for anyone interested in issues around labor and work in the media, labor history, and popular culture history during two key decades in modern American history.
