Book The Allied Health Professions

Download or read book The Allied Health Professions written by Susan Nancarrow and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The allied health professions have gained legitimacy through the pursuit of research evidence and the standardisation of practice. Yet there remains very little analysis or understanding of these professions. Adopting theory from the sociology of health professions, this unique text explores the sociological, economic, political and philosophical pressures that have shaped the professions. Drawing on case studies and examples from occupations including optometrists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists to emerging vocations, including pedorthists and allied health assistants, this book offers an innovative comparison of allied health professions in Australia and Britain. By telling the story of their past, this original book prepares the allied health professions for a new and different future.

Book Multimodality and Social Semiosis

Download or read book Multimodality and Social Semiosis written by Margit Böck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gunther Kress, one of the founders of social semiotics and multimodality, has made lasting contributions to these fields through his work in semiotics and meaning-making; power and identity; agency, design, production; and pedagogy and learning; in varied sites of transformation. This book brings together leading scholars in a variety of disciplines, including social semiotics, pedagogy, linguistics, media and communication studies, new literacy studies, ethnography, academic literacy, literary criticism and, more recently, medical/clinical education, to examine and build upon his work. This disciplinary diversity is evidence of the ways in which Kress' work has influenced and been influenced by a wide range of academic work and intellectual endeavors and how it has been used to lay foundations for theory-building and concept development in a varied yet connected range of areas. The individual contributions to the book pick up the threads of the often collaborative work of the authors with Kress; they show how these approaches were subsequently developed and discuss what future trajectories the authors see for them.

Download or read book Conflicted Health Care written by Ester Carolina Apesoa-Varano and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has spent time in a hospital as a patient or family member of a patient hopes that those who attend to us or our loved ones are at their professional best and that they care for us in ways that console us and preserve our dignity. This book takes an intimate look at how health care practitioners struggle to live up to their professional and caring ideals through (or during?) twelve-hour shifts on the hospital floor. From 3,200 hours of participant-observation and 500 hours of follow-up interviews with twenty-one doctors, thirty registered nurses, twenty-one respiratory therapists, twenty medical social workers, and eighteen occupational, physical, and speech therapists, the authors create a complex picture of the workplace conflicts that different types of health care practitioners face. Though all these groups espouse caring ideals, professional interests and a curative orientation dominate in patient care and interoccupational relations. Because emotive caring is not supported by the organization of health care in the hospital, it becomes an individual virtue that overworked staff find hard to perform, and it takes on an ideological form that obscures the status hierarchy among practitioners. Conflicts between practitioners rest upon the ranking of each group's knowledge base. They manifest in efforts to work as a team or set limits on practitioner responsibilities and in differing views on unionization.

When Truman successfully brought World War II to an end, the submarine fleets in the Atlantic and Pacific were commanded by Lamar High School graduates. Lamar's legends, however, are not limited to those who found fame after they left the city. Book Foundations for Operating Department Practice Essential Theory for Practice

Download or read book Foundations for Operating Department Practice Essential Theory for Practice written by Hannah Abbott and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2014-08-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough new text is the first 'theory' textbook published for ODP students studying at degree level and maps neatly onto the ODP degree curriculum. Written by experts from the Profession the book covers the core theoretical and professional components of the ODP curriculum, including chapters on: Professionalism Law Ethics Reflective practice Decision making Psychosocial aspects of care Research and evidence based practice Each chapter includes case studies and pedagogy designed to help ODP students see the relevance of these issues to their everyday practice, and enhance learning and study. This book is key reading for all ODP students and qualified professionals. "This book identifies strongly the enhanced development of the operating department practice (ODP) profession. It focuses well on the theory underpinning the need for the compassionate care of the patient. Compassionate care is a fundamental requirement of ODPs now, given the changes in the profession. Many years ago, the main role of the ODP was to give technical support to anaesthetists. This has completely changed and the focus is now on ensuring safe and effective perioperative patient care using enhanced and improved knowledge and skills. It is a fundamental requirement for ODPs to develop these advanced skills and knowledge in order to firmly establish the profession. This book does not focus on clinical skills, it focuses on the role of the ODP in every-day work. This involves elements such as interprofessional working, research, patient safety, psychological aspects of patient care, and legal frameworks. Most ODP text books have not emphasised the importance of these topics - whereas this book does. The value of this book is firstly to emphasise the knowledge and understanding needed by ODPS to care for patients appropriately, and secondly, to emphasise the improvements that the profession has been undergoing over the past few years. Based on the information within this book, students, practitioners, theatre managers and even surgeons and anaesthetists will be able to better understand the modern role of the ODP. Technical skills are obviously still important, but even more important is the safety and compassionate care of patients in the operating environment. This can only be achieved by a combination of knowledge and skills, working in harmony with other professionals. This book will provide a sound basis for the promotion of the ODP profession and the better understanding of all other professionals on the way that ODPs now work." Paul Wicker, Head of Perioperative Studies, Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, UK
