Book Time Resolved Soft X Ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Molecules in the Gas and Liquid Phases

Download or read book Time Resolved Soft X Ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Molecules in the Gas and Liquid Phases written by Cédric Schmidt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work studies the relaxation dynamics of molecules in both the gas and liquid phases after strong field ionization, using transient absorption in the soft X-rays. In particular, the thesis presents the first realization of time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the spectral water window with a laser-based HHG source. These remarkable experiments were not only performed for isolated molecules, but also in liquids, for which the spectral coverage of the K-edges of C, N, and O are of primary importance for investigating biological molecules. The technique relies on the generation of high-order harmonics to further probe the electronic structure of molecules. Using the atomic selectivity of high energies and the temporal coherence of laser technology, we demonstrate the observation of the first stages of chemical transformation of matter in the gas and liquid phases.

Book The Thz Dynamics Of Liquids Probed By Inelastic X ray Scattering

Download or read book The Thz Dynamics Of Liquids Probed By Inelastic X ray Scattering written by Alessandro Cunsolo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its development toward the end of the past millennium, high-resolution Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) has substantially improved our knowledge of the collective dynamics of liquids at mesoscopic scales, that is, over distances and time-lapses approaching those typical of first neighboring atoms' interactions. However, despite the undoubted scientific relevance and the rapid evolution toward maturity, comprehensive monographs on this technique are not available. The primary purpose of this book is to partially fill this lack while providing a helpful reference for both mature scientists and less experienced researchers in the field. After a general introduction to the fundamental aspects of scattering measurements, the IXS cross-section is analytically derived, and the complementarity with Inelastic Neutron Scattering is discussed in detail. The remainder of the book reviews representative IXS studies on simple fluids focusing on topics as relevant as the dynamic crossover from the hydrodynamic to the kinetic regime, the onset of relaxation phenomena and related high-frequency viscoelasticity, the gradual emergence of quantum effects, the evidence of dynamic boundaries partitioning the supercritical domain, the prevalence of solid-like aspects in the high-frequency dynamics of fluids, and the dynamic fingerprints of the polymorphic nature of liquid aggregates.

Book Challenges for Energy Dispersive X ray Absorption Spectroscopy at the ESRF Microsecond Time Resolution and Megabar Pressures

Download or read book Challenges for Energy Dispersive X ray Absorption Spectroscopy at the ESRF Microsecond Time Resolution and Megabar Pressures written by Giuliana Aquilanti and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thesis concerns the development of two different applications of energy-dispersive Xray absorption spectroscopy at the ESRF: time-resolved (TR) studies pu shed to the microsecond time resolution and high-pressure (HP) studies at the limit of the Megabar pressures. The work has been developed in two distinct parts, and the underlying theme has been the exploitation of the capabilities of an X-ray absorption spectrometer in dispersive geometry on a third generation synchrotron source. For TR studies, the study of the triplet excited state following a laser excitation of Ph(P20sH2)44- has been chosen to push the technique to the us time resolution. In the HP part, the suitability of the energy dispersive Xray absorption spectrometer for HP studies using diamond anvils cell is stressed. Sorne technical developments carried out on beamline ID24 are discussed. Finally, the most extensive scientific part concerns a combined X-ray absorption and diffraction study of InAs under pressure.

Book New Many body Theories On Soft X ray Spectroscopy Of Insulating Solids

Download or read book New Many body Theories On Soft X ray Spectroscopy Of Insulating Solids written by Keiichiro Nasu and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-01-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new, promising theories on soft X-ray spectroscopy. As third generation synchrotron light sources have started operating, more precise and sophisticated theories on X-ray spectroscopy are needed. In particular, many-body effects on optical spectroscopy are the hottest topic in solid state physics, since they seem to break conventional mean field pictures completely. Conceptual and instructive theories on X-ray scattering, photoemission, and light absorption spectroscopy for many-body systems are introduced in this book. In addition, many important and lasting experiments are referred to, and compared with the authors' theories.

Book Resonant X ray Emission Spectroscopy of Liquid Water

Download or read book Resonant X ray Emission Spectroscopy of Liquid Water written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques to study the electronic structure of liquids are rare. Most recently, resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) has been shown to be an extremely versatile spectroscopy to study both occupied and unoccupied electronic states for liquids in thermodynamic equilibrium. However, XES requires high-brilliance soft x-ray synchrotron radiation and poses significant technical challenges to maintain a liquid sample in an ultra-high vacuum environment. Our group has therefore developed and constructed a novel experimental setup for the study of liquids, with the long-term goal of investigating the electronic structure of biological systems in aqueous environments. We have developed a flow-through liquid cell in which the liquid is separated from vacuum by a thin Si3N4 or SiC window and which allows a precise control of temperature. This approach has significant advantages compared to static liquids cells used in the past. Furthermore, we have designed a dedicated high-transmission, high-resolution soft x-ray spectrometer. The high transmission makes it possible to measure complete resonant XES"maps" in less than an hour, giving unprecedented detailed insight into the electronic structure of the investigated sample. Using this new equipment we have investigated the electronic structure of liquid water. Furthermore, our XES spectra and maps give information about ultra-fast dissociation on the timescale of the O 1s core hole lifetime, which is strongly affected by the initial state hydrogen bonding configuration.
