Book excerpt: "Chris Hillman is arguably the primary architect of what's come to be known as country rock. After playing the Southern California folk and bluegrass circuit, he joined David Crosby, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Michael Clark as an original member of The Byrds. He went on to partner with Gram Parsons to launch The Flying Burrito Brothers, recording a handful of albums that have become touchstones of rock-influenced country. Hillman then embarked on a prolific recording career in various configurations: as a member of Stephen Stills' Manassas; as a member of Souther-Hillman-Furay with J.D. Souther and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield; as a solo artist; and in a trio with his fellow former Byrds Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. In the 1980s, Hillman launched a successful mainstream country career when he formed The Desert Rose Band with Herb Pedersen and John Jorgenson, scoring eight Top 10 country hits. In the midst of his country success he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has since released a number of solo albums with the most recent, Bidin' My Time, produced by Tom Petty. In Time Between, Hillman takes readers behind the curtain of his quintessentially Southern Californian musical journey."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: In search of love, absolution, or forgiveness, Charles Boatman leaves the Fraser Valley of British Columbia and returns mysteriously to Vietnam, the country where he fought twenty-nine years earlier as a young, reluctant soldier. But his new encounters seem irreconcilable with his memories. When he disappears, his daughter Ada, and her brother, Jon, travel to Vietnam, to the streets of Danang and beyond, to search for him. Their quest takes them into the heart of a country that is at once incomprehensible, impassive, and beautiful. Chasing her father’s shadow for weeks, following slim leads, Ada feels increasingly hopeless. Yet while Jon slips into the urban nightlife to avoid what he most fears, Ada finds herself growing closer to her missing father — and strong enough to forgive him and bear the heartbreaking truth of his long-kept secret. Bergen’s marvellously drawn characters include Lieutenant Dat, the police officer who tries to seduce Ada by withholding information; the boy Yen, an orphan, who follows Ada and claims to be her guide; Jack Gouds, an American expatriate and self-styled missionary; his strong-willed and unhappy wife, Elaine, whose desperate encounters with Charles in the days before his disappearance will always haunt her; and Hoang Vu, the artist and philosopher who will teach Ada about the complexity of love and betrayal. We also come to learn about the reclusive author Dang Tho, whose famous wartime novel pulls at Charles in ways he can’t explain. Moving between father and daughter, the present and the past, The Time in Between is a luminous, unforgettable novel about one family, two cultures, and a profound emotional journey in search of elusive answers.

Book excerpt: About the Book A mystifying occurrence takes place between the death and dying of Charlotta Aims. Her body is discovered in her brand-new Mercedes found parked in an alley, posed with a red rose, and her beautiful face has been made hideous with layers of gelatinous makeup. Her body is wrapped in a wedding gown, and missing the little finger on her right hand. How she died, why her body was defiled, and how she ended up in a bad part of town is unknown. Barry Gunther is an ugly, little man with a persona warped by a troubled childhood. He engages in morbid hobbies, including one he calls ‘Flesh Painting,’ a hobby that has nothing to do with body art, but everything to do with immortal preservation. The investigation leads detectives to a mortuary where they must stay alert to stay alive. Together they make gruesome discoveries, and they all point to Barry Gunther as the killer. So, too, does the forensic evidence, except for one set of unidentified footprints. Still, Detective Sorensen is confident he has his man until he receives a phone call from the victim’s psychic aunt who lives in Sweden thousands of miles away. She reports a dream that unsettles the lead detective and casts doubt on his conviction. Added to this mix of intrigue is a jealous husband, a spurned high school jock, a not-so-feminine housekeeper, and three employees of an exclusive car dealership. Time Between will leave readers guessing until the very last page. About the Author Lucas Patt lives in Nebraska. These people were able to keep great records of their tales and memories that survived many great perils and opposition. These tales began with the founding of the Devoted people and the persecutions that led to their banishment from the kípos (garden) by others envious of their great faith. The first leadership of the Devoted Ones was struck down by the Creator for being greedy and misusing of their station. The Creator then chose Tragon to be the new ruler of the Devoted Ones, with a promise that only those from his line would rule the kingdom as long as they were faithful to the Creator. These tales will focus on the rule of the six true rulers of the Devoted people and how their faiths in the Creator led to their protection and success, though there would be problems caused by some of these rulers when they went to their own desires. The kingdom would then be wrecked and confused by those from Tragon’s line who were not called by the Creator to rule, turning the Devoted Ones into a condition that the Creator never wanted them to be in. The Devoted Ones were different from the other peoples of the earth because of their faith in the Creator, but no longer was there any from Tragon’s line to serve the Creator faithfully in their station. The last rulers conformed their people to the ways of all others in evil imagination. The Creator tried to get the people to change, but they would not have Him anymore. He was forced to show His hand against the evils that lived on the world.

Book excerpt: This collection of twenty stories delves into the lives of Egyptian characters, from those living in Egypt to those who have immigrated to the United States. With subtle and eloquent prose, the complexities of these characters are revealed, opening a door into their intimate struggles with identity and place. We meet people who are tempted by the possibilities of America and others who are tempted by the desire to return home. Some are in the throes of re-creating themselves in the new world while others seem to be embedded in the loss of their homeland. Many of these characters, although physically located in either the United States or Egypt, have lives that embrace both cultures. "A Game of Chance" follows the actions of a young man when he wins the immigration lottery and then must decide whether or not to change his life. "Cumin and Coriander" takes us inside a woman's thoughts as she tries to come to terms with the path her life has taken while working as a cook for American expatriates in Egypt. "The Top" enters the mind of a man whose immigration results in a loss of identity and sanity. These compelling stories pull us into the lives of many different characters and offer us striking insights into the Arab American experience.
